LANGUAGE Due to the ever-shortening distance between the United States and its neighbors, the National Defense Act has provided for an experimental language program in American schools. As a part of this plan, South Shore is one of the two high schools in Chicago which have a language laboratory equipped with facilities for thirty-five students. By listening to lessons, poems, and stories on tapes or records, students gain pronunciation and comprehension skills and an appreciation of foreign culture. Through the language laboratory, the United States hopes to go one step further in the breakdown of the language barrier and one step closer to the human ideal of peace and understanding between nations. Students listen intently to language records in order to improve their pronunciation skills. Front row: Linda Stone. larvis Friduss. Srfconrl row: George Solomon, Roberta Berger.
