Newman, beloved instructor of Military Sci- ence and Tactics, made the supreme sacri- fice at Heartbreak Ridge, Korea. He was a man who understood young people and taught them that co-operation and good fel- lowship go hand in hand. Following his graduation from the Univer- sity of San Francisco in 1940, he was com- missioned a Second Lieutenant in the U. S. Army. He served in Europe until 1948, when he was assigned to the R.O.T.C. unit at South Shore. He was awarded the Bronze Star, the Silver Star, and the Presidential Unit Citation. 17
