Memories . . . secrets held deep within one senior's heart: moments shared by each graduate. Our first confused weeks on the Warrior Campus re- call a freshman's shy awe of enviously confident upper- classmen. However, our Green Door Dance and the hilarious Freshman Assembly showed that this first timid- ity was being replaced by initiative and enthusiasm. Soon our cheers echoed from the rafters as we proudly ioined our voices and loyalties with the Class of 1961. n The sophomore year was iust as much fun. The exoticl South Pacific dance enhanced our reputation for suc- cessful ventures. The highlight of the year was the mo- ment when we first put on our class rings-the first schooll rings ever chosen here at South City. Closed campus! The topic of many heated discus- sions by iuniors at Niki's and Pappa .loe's! We won first place in the class competition rally for best spirit and dis- play of class color. Sayonara , our dance dedicated to the outgoing seniors, was quite successful. The big victory that year was winning the inter-class track meet. Then . . . A Touch of Venus , our very special Junior Prom . . . which was simply out of this world. Upon entering our final year, we found ourselves in a new situation that recalled the bewilderment of our freshman days. The tremendous growth of the school MAN-HATER-WOMAN Pinky Pucci .lim LoCodo Vi 9055233 REVIEW had made split sessions necessary. Our senior dance Joyeux Noel was a ioyous Christ- mas affair. Holly, bells, and mistletoe echoed the holiday spirit. The Senior Ball, Wonderland By Night , was held at rulu' the California Country Club. It was indeed a regal affair Gerry Mdffillel Clyde Haddock enioyed by everyone. ' Senior Week at last! The year started with a thrilling victory over Ravenswood High, and ended with a disap- pointing 26-20 loss at the hands of arch-rival .lef- ferson. During the entire season the Varsity fought with great determination, surprising many rivals and upsetting the highly favored Vikings of Mills. Great performances were turned in by Ed Elliot, George Baptista, Clyde Haddock, and Ron Wits- chy. The team was fired up for all its contests and even though they didn't win the championship, their fellow students and coaches should be justi- fiably proud ofthe team. San Mateo Hillsdale . The hard fought victory over Westmoor was symbolic of the team spirit and determination. They wanted to win, not so much for themselves but for the freshman class. Our Water Polo Team is the only one in our Peninsula League, therefore they have to travel to the Southern Peninsula League. This sport requires a tremendous amount of stamina and swimming ability. lO2 WATER POLO ' , - L Left to Right, FIRST ROW: Earl Hampton, Mike Shelton, James Hudson, Wayne Rocca, Jim Evans, Glen Common, Ron Maguire, Roger Leavitt. The swim team is made of boys who have to follow strict training rules. lf they run too much or get too active outside of the water they lose much of their coordina- tion. The strokes that are used are the back stroke, breast stroke, but- terfly, and free style. Also includ- ed in a swim meet are the divers who go through intricate motions and cut the water clean. Our matmen achieved a great amount of success by placing four boys on the all P.L. Team. They were George Kanakaris, Alan Coon, Ed Elliott, and Tom Crespin. All four boys then competed in the N o r t h e r n California Wrestling Tournament bringing further honor to their school. Coach Ray De Jong should be proud of them all. This year's golf team was one of the best our school has ever as- sembled. Coach Earl Homan's squad played fine, consistent golf all year long, while at times show- ing outstanding ability and a wealth of timely shots. The team was paced by Junior Morrie Ver- burgge who is rapidly becoming the most promising young golfer on the Peninsula. With the return of Verburgge, Joe Pacheo, John Rich, and others, our school is insured of future success on the golf course. 4 The tennis team, under the lead- ership of Mr. Winston, has a new and enthusiastic interest created at South San Francisco High. Many of the members have been work- ing out since the end of last year's season to gain a higher position on the tennis ladder. The response of the underclassmen has also been enthusiastic and the work that they are turning out creates great prom- ise for the future teams. GOLF LEFT TO RIGHT: Coach Earl Homan, Gil Young, .loe Pacheco, John Rich, Morrie Verbmgge, South San Francisco's soccer team has, in its two years of exis- tence, earned a tremendous re- spect among its league members. It has proven never to be an easily defeated team. On this year's soc- cer team was our foreign exchange student Heinz Weiss. The Warriors were defeated by the Champion team, Sequoia, only by a last min- ute goal. S.S.F. 0 .. .. Sequoia I S.S.F. l .. .. Sequoia I S.S.F. 0 .. Priory 3 S.S.F. 3 .. . . . There is a great deal of work in winning the Rooters' Trophy. The flash cards and Pepperrettes were two factors which contrib- uted to our winning the trophy. The Pep Club purchased flash cards and the cheerleaders organized the section. The Pepperrettes formed a W and waved blue and white pom-poms. When the football game ended, the rooters refused to leave. They remained to yell for their school and their Warriors. I would like to thank each of you who elect- ed me for the highest office that a student can hold. l put my whole self into this important iob, but this alone was not enoughg we needed your backing, and we got it. As a student coun- cil we worked towards the realization of this idea: South San Francisco High School is the best school, but we'll try to make our school even better. Bob Freund Bob Fruend Student Body President Carole Thodas Mary Mock Noreen Vallerga Vice President Secretary Treasurer Delle Furrow Commissioner of Student Affairs David Edwards Clyde Haddock Commissioner of Boys Athletics Ned Brasher Commissioner of Programs Mary Carey Commissioner of Music Commissioner of Girls' Athletics Mr. Warren Heckman has served as advisory faculty member in the Student Council's organization of campus activity for several years. He is also a music teacher and band leader. In his capacity as advisor, Mr. Heckman assisted the council at all their meetings and supervised many activities. His time and advice was greatly appreci- ated by the Student Body. This year, due to the split sessions, the Student Coun- cil had to meet before school. One of the main prob- lems they attempted to solve was that of creating inter- est in student government. Finally it was decided to start new with a completely different type of government. lt was set up on a British system and started into action with the election of new officers for the fall semester. They are looking forward to organizing the P L Confer- ence which will be held here next year. FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENTS I would like to express sincere appreciation to my school for giving me the opportunity to represent South San Francisco and the American students in Europe last summer. The feeling of doing some part to further international understanding will be a memorable experience that will last the rest of my life. Thank you, Sharon Le'Ann Parks Sharon Parks Auf Wiedershen lgood-bye in Germanl means I hope l'll see you again. O X l55 As each senior walks down the aisle on graduation night, ending twelve years of public schooling, his thoughts turn to the preceding graduates as well as those of the future. Whether this night is the end of his formal schooling or the beginning of an even higher education, the graduate pauses to think of the contributions former classes have made to his school, without which his class could not have performed its many activities. ln turn this graduate con- siders those achievements his class had made for the benefit of those to follow. We, as the Class of l96l, may well be proud of our accomplishments. Everyone will remember this year for the overwhelm- ing recapture of the South City-Jeff Rooting Trophy which makes it three years in a row for South City, and which will provide the fighting spirit needed for the future. Our scholastic record was impressive, too, many students received scholarships at our Sen- ior Breakfast. Our drama and music de- partments were credited with such achieve- ments as the production of South Pacific and rated as one of the top ten drama departments in the Bay Area at the San Francisco State Drama Festival. All of these accomplishments have served to make South City a finer school. And as South City improves, so do its stu- dents. Long after our class is forgotten, the results of our undertakings will remain. Senior Class M , .1 of 1961 2 ff . Famous Last Word S . . and furthermore We, the advisor and members of the 1961 Iris staff, wish to formally summarize and evaluate our accounts on this night of our last, very last deadline. Although this block of copy is under the influence of two people who are quite hysterically tired, we want you to realize that all of this information is en- tirely and positively true. In the course of completing this book we used 75V4 paper clips, 4 rusty straight pins, 107 pencils, 2 borrowed - and lost - rulers, 156 cokes, all the typewriters in C8, and two barrels of elbow grease. We made 77 long distance phone calls, 23 local phone calls, and 3 moose calls at 12:00 one night. In order to survive the whole year we consumed 4 bottles of Bayers aspirin, 2 king-sized cartons of No-Doze, and 101 shots of. . . coffee. We bowled 7 times, sobbed twice, had about 500 misunder- standings, and made absolute nuts out of ourselves by laugh- ing hysterically at 3:30 in the morning. Believe me, if you have any complaints or criticism after all this, TUFF! GDMMWV Editor-1n-Ch1ef IJ ,
