Victory and Defeat The coaching staff at South City were beginning to think that their Warriors were jinxed. They had lost four and tied one, but three of the losses had been by a touchdown or less. A fumble, interception, or mistake at the wrong time was responsible for three of these defeats. But, in each game, the Warriors made a stirring second half comeback. This was typical of their spirit all season. They never gave up and fought 'till the end. Their spirit was growing and the raging Warriors battled Hills- dale toe-to-toe. But the P.L. champs escaped with a bare one- point victory-the closest they came to defeat all year. The Warriors were to be kept from victory no longer. They proved it by knocking over Westmoor 20 to 13. They came back the next week and did it again by beating San Mateo 12 to 7. After a bad night with Burlingame, they finished the season with a 6 to O loss to Jefferson. Again they fought 'till the last second and, just before the final gun sounded, they were still trying des- perately to score. It is not always the victory that counts but the fight as well and, the l958 Varsity Warriors can say they fought well. 76
