CHARLES SELLICK Dean of Boys EDNA de LARIOS Dean of Girls LOIS SELBERG Head Counselor 'fx XX ' -W, LOUIS J. BAGNALL Principal HIGH SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION The students of South San Francisco High School have always known they have a good friend in our principal, Mr. Bagnall. His relations and cooperation with the Stu- dent Council has long been a close one. T his year, our principal, deans and head counselor have had a monumental job in supervising the education of six- teen hundred students. ln addition to this, they have had to correlate the many diversified activities it takes to run a large school efficiently. our huge increase in enrollment has brought about many new problems. Often, there was no precedent in our district for their solution. Still, things hummed along smoothly and our administrators are still smiling-friendly through all the snags and difficulties they have met. These attitudes are one of the many things we shall cherish-the way our administrators were ever available to us and the fact they never lost sight of their goal . . . a good education for all in a harmonious atmosphere of mutual respect. 9 . Math, Algebra ur Facult B etween the teachers and students of South San Fran- cisco High School there has always existed a very cordial relationship. O ur school is growing rapidly and many of the problems which affect the administration have also affected the classroom teachers. However, the rapport has neither bogged-down nor suffered during these growing pains. 0 ur faculty has never been a more intellectual-machine grinding out knowledge to fill a student's empty void. T hey have been far too human for that! Many teachers have given generously of their time, both before and after school, in order to help make individual student's prob- lems seem less intense. This friendly attitude is a con- stant factor in South's harmonious teacher-student relation- ship. oooeoooo 1' A -S O F c, ii :r is 3 I - UA' I 2 ,.,.'. Victory and Defeat The coaching staff at South City were beginning to think that their Warriors were jinxed. They had lost four and tied one, but three of the losses had been by a touchdown or less. A fumble, interception, or mistake at the wrong time was responsible for three of these defeats. But, in each game, the Warriors made a stirring second half comeback. This was typical of their spirit all season. They never gave up and fought 'till the end. Their spirit was growing and the raging Warriors battled Hills- dale toe-to-toe. But the P.L. champs escaped with a bare one- point victory-the closest they came to defeat all year. The Warriors were to be kept from victory no longer. They proved it by knocking over Westmoor 20 to 13. They came back the next week and did it again by beating San Mateo 12 to 7. After a bad night with Burlingame, they finished the season with a 6 to O loss to Jefferson. Again they fought 'till the last second and, just before the final gun sounded, they were still trying des- perately to score. It is not always the victory that counts but the fight as well and, the l958 Varsity Warriors can say they fought well. 76 FOUTB LL Bottom row, left to right: George Cleveland, Bill Wright. wk, End coach Bob Brian Top row, left to right: Bob Flood, Mickey Corso, John Gallegos, George Learned, Duke Tadday, Tom Rodgers, Monte Young, Gary Paglueranu Baptista, Manuel Cruz, Gary Hopper, Rick Love, Ron Kelly, John Pryshepa, Bill Heagney, Joh Neal Bob PENINSULA LEAGUE STANDINGS Won Lost HILLSDALE 6 0 BURLINGAME 5 1 CAPUCHINO 4 2 SOUTH S. Monte Young, fleet-footed linebacker, knocked down passes and made tack- les, but interception, with a 65 yard Don Bullard, out in front as usual, clicks off a seventy yard pass and run before Cap. de- fenders can stop him. run-back for the touchdown, was his 1 greatest feat. This hard-hitting guard was Ken Brusa who played well both offense and defense. Gary Paglierani, the screen pass king, snared a hard one in front of Capuchino defender. PLAYERS OF Bill Dawson, Blanket winner, all-league tackle and line backer, season captain, and player-of-the-week for the TAM, game, was one of the top line men in the league. He was also tops with his team mates as they elect d e him season captain. Leadership ability and talent make a good combinat' ' ' ' ' lon and Bill Dawson has this combination. Ken Mesa, defensive line-backer, earned his trophy a gavnst Burlingame by recovering two fumbles, an inter- ception and made numerous tackles. Sonny Carlile, all-league-back and player-of-the week for h t e CAP. game. Linemen coach Nick Crusick South City 6 South City O South City 7 South City 7 South City O Hard working and always busy were man- agers Anthony Tambini, left, and Gary i958 was not the best season in the history of freshman football in South City. Still, it needn't be considered the worst, either. There were many potential stars developed and much spirit was shown throughout the season. Although the Papooses lost every game, not one of the games was a slaughter. Several games were lost as a result of one or two mistakes. All in all, the season was considered a success and there will be quite a few Papooses becoming Warriors in the near future, GAME SCORES Westmore 7 San Mateo 7 Burlingame 20 l-lillsdale 20 Jefferson l9 Backfield coach Tony Fardella Left to right: Ray Abold, Dennis Alsterlind, Bill Bersie, Dave Shaughnessy, Dick Drake, Jim Hamilton, Stan Hillsinger, Bill Wieger, Rich Questoni, Joe Park, Dennis Hansen and Gary Guaraldi are the members of the C team. The lightweights under Coach Warren Hag- berg showed improvement throughout the year and were always playing their hardest, The D's, however, didn't do so well in the standings but were always hustling. The C's, who earned a fairly good record, scored some thrilling victories during the season. Among them was an upset over Capuchino. South City scores were a lot better than their win-loss column. They nearly beat San Mateo, Capuchino, Hillsdale and Burlingame. They also lost a one- pointer to Westmore.
