Joe Eulcher ALL. AIVWEQICAN South City has produced an All American. Ioe Butcher was named to the 1956, seventy-eight man All Arn- erican high school football team. Butcher's top flight play throughout the season made it seem inevitable that he would receive this recognition. He was the backbone of the South City defense, and produced many aahs from the crowds with his consistently fine, bone-crushing blocks. joe proved to be a deter- mining factor in the War- rior's eventual winning of the co-championship. The South City thin-clads finished their season honor- ably after a slow start. The frosh-soph team finished sixth in the P. A. L. and the varsity finished seventh. Swiftest over the 1.9 mile course was Ted deWilde. Although only a freshman, Ted Sometimes competed on the varsity. Veteran Fred Pariani was the most consistent varsity runner with Richard Mickey always showing well. Freshman Fred Leggero showed much promise. The varsity boasted wins over Hills- dale and Westmoor. The frosh-soph runners didn't win a dual meet, but came through in the P. A. L. final to defeat several teams which had previously beaten them. s if Butch played first string varsity guard in his sopho- more year after being pulled up from the Frosh-Soph. His junior year found him unanimous choice All P. A. L guard. Surpassing all expectations for greatness in his last year of high school football, he was honored as Northern Calif- omia lineman of the year, and then went on to win the ultimate of athletic honors for himself and for his school. This year's Frosh certainly did not even come close to being the most impressive team in the lea- gue as far as the won-loss column goes. Their record does not completely show the whole story. Their record of no wins, four losses, and three ties appears to be a lost cause. However this was not true. Almost completely lacking of past high school ex- perience they showed one out- standing strong point. This was their brilliant defensive work during the season. Any coach will tell you that you can't make a player good defensively unless he has a natural knack for it. Al- though they could not build an offense as brilliant as their de- fense, they gained the one thing they were lacking, experience.
