Highways represents the academic paft of the past year -- your teachers, your friends, and yourself. Byways includes extra- curricular activities -- sports, clubs, and student government. Highways and Byways symbolizes a journey through four years of education and recreation. Those who entered South City High as Fresh- men have just begun their journey. The Seniors have completed this journey, but have a long road ahead of them. Follow us now as we travel once more this avenue of 1956-1957 that has meant so much to us. w , ff fl ,- f v., 1 A . ,,H. s. , x I f,.. As.: A' 'A 'lgfpgl ' if- ' ' V N 1 . ' -'-.V 1 f , ,xr A . They have given us both moments of pleasure and hours of homework. They are our leaders and our friends. Some doubled as coun- selors as well as teachers, helping us with per- sonal as well as classroom problems. One of the best examples of loyalty to our school is Miss Rue Clifford, assistant to the librarian, who is pictured at the right. As proof of her devotion to the school, she has taught for forty-three years and has worked in the library for the past two years. As a class, we participated in and won three consecutive swim meets, this year our boys took first place in the volleyball tournament. Our members have been active in sports, clubs, and other extracurricular activities throughout the four years. However, all our accomplishments were not in the field of extra- curricular activities. A high percentage made the Superinten- dent's Honor Roll every semester. Class rings were chosen in our sophomore year. Some of our junior Class activities in- cluded a picnic, prom, and carnival. Our Senior Ball, Syanara drew a large crowd. The enthusiasm of the Senior Class was shown by the unexpected turnout of senior boys who had never participated in sports before, and the number of senior girls who attended all athletic events. We are proud of our spirit and ambition. lv Of icera er, Roberta Johnson, Secretaryg Rod Ford, Presidentg Jim Stiremcm, V. - Pres. 3 Gary Frink, Sgt. -at-arms eloreden fa fiuea STANDING, left to right: Representatives: Rod Gard- ner, Dick Lopez. Coach of the Year, stresses strategy at half time The story of the success of the Warrior football team this year might well be symbolic of the tremendous spirit of the South City High Student Body. Joe Eulcher ALL. AIVWEQICAN South City has produced an All American. Ioe Butcher was named to the 1956, seventy-eight man All Arn- erican high school football team. Butcher's top flight play throughout the season made it seem inevitable that he would receive this recognition. He was the backbone of the South City defense, and produced many aahs from the crowds with his consistently fine, bone-crushing blocks. joe proved to be a deter- mining factor in the War- rior's eventual winning of the co-championship. The South City thin-clads finished their season honor- ably after a slow start. The frosh-soph team finished sixth in the P. A. L. and the varsity finished seventh. Swiftest over the 1.9 mile course was Ted deWilde. Although only a freshman, Ted Sometimes competed on the varsity. Veteran Fred Pariani was the most consistent varsity runner with Richard Mickey always showing well. Freshman Fred Leggero showed much promise. The varsity boasted wins over Hills- dale and Westmoor. The frosh-soph runners didn't win a dual meet, but came through in the P. A. L. final to defeat several teams which had previously beaten them. s if Butch played first string varsity guard in his sopho- more year after being pulled up from the Frosh-Soph. His junior year found him unanimous choice All P. A. L guard. Surpassing all expectations for greatness in his last year of high school football, he was honored as Northern Calif- omia lineman of the year, and then went on to win the ultimate of athletic honors for himself and for his school. This year's Frosh certainly did not even come close to being the most impressive team in the lea- gue as far as the won-loss column goes. Their record does not completely show the whole story. Their record of no wins, four losses, and three ties appears to be a lost cause. However this was not true. Almost completely lacking of past high school ex- perience they showed one out- standing strong point. This was their brilliant defensive work during the season. Any coach will tell you that you can't make a player good defensively unless he has a natural knack for it. Al- though they could not build an offense as brilliant as their de- fense, they gained the one thing they were lacking, experience. Led by John Yantis and Darold Lennier, the South City 120's overwhelmed all of their North P. A. L. op- position except for the peren- nially strong San Mateo Bear- cats. The Varsity and B thin- clads, while losing most of the dual meets to stronger league opponents, came up with some outstanding individuals. Ed Giachetti, Senior, an out- standing 880 and mile runner, racked up lots of first places. Versatile jim Stireman, a con- sistent shot and discuss man, also picked up valuable points in the sprints. Rod Ford deve- loped into a fine shot putter. Gary Frink, after recovering from a leg injury, became an ace low hurdler. In the B's, Monte Young, Bill Yeager, Gabino Caballero, and Dan Ruiz were the big guns. 61 f 'QQ ,,s WARS! Returnees from last year's N.P.A.L. championship team were Gil Ullery, Dick Lopez, Darrell Slafter, and joe Butcher. With these players forming a nucleus, a good crop of players from last year's frosh team, plus a number of Seniors who were sidelined last year, the Blue and White figured to be the league spoilers this year. With all this material, and a new j.V.'s team coached by Tom Gaffney, Varsity coach Frank Kelly expected a satisfying season. With the coming of the rainy season we moved inside for tumbling, folk dancing, table tennis, volleyball, basketball, and badminton. Spring found us ready for sun, swimming, and soft- ball. Interclass sports became more popular. Seniors found the Juniors giving them competition in everything from basketball to volleyball.
