SOUTH CITY Bob Silva Vernon Neatherlin Coach Ben Bramble At the outset ol the 1948 lootball season the South San Francisco varstty team looked great desptte tts usual ltght ltne Wtth loe Abelar as captatn and lack Pttts cofcaptam South Ctty had many thrtlls and upsets from one game to another ttll the last contest wtth our lrtendly rtval Iellerson The seasons play started oll wtth a practice game against Watsonvtlle with the Wtldcats coming out on the long end ot a 24-6 dectston Cap Ioe Abelar saved the Warrtor eleven lrorn betng blanked tn the clostng mtnutes ol the game when, recetvtng a pass trom Eugene Esparza on the Wildcat 19 yard ltne he went all the way lor the Blue and Whtte's ltrst and only score The ltrst Breaker Bonnet was awarded to loe Abelar. SERRA VS. SOUTH CITY The ltttle but strong South Ctty team was down tn spirit alter the defeat of the week belore on the Watsonvtlle turl, but they came through wtth a 6 O wtn over the Setra Htgh Padres Btg Ernest Hosst came tnto the game to score from the 4 yard ltne where Abelar was previously downed The day was htghltghted by ltttle Iohnny Castro when he took the kick oll and ran 60 yards lor a touchdown only to be called back on a clipping penalty Castro recetved the second Breaker Bonnet SAN IOSE VS. SOUTH CITY South Ctty played the ltrst PAL game ol the season on local turl against San lose Htgh The Bulldogs and the Warriors spltt the bill to the tune ot 6-6 in a real thrtll packed contest The San Ioseans scored on a qutck opener between tackle and guard whtle South Ctty scored on a 72 yard sprint by Castro Thts run was set up beautifully on two prevtous plays Abelar carrted the ball on the ltrst of these plays and made the ltne ol scrtmmage The next play by Rossi gaxned one yard Abelar then took the ball and, in a play that looked like the preceding one, handed the ball to Castro who then cut tackle and raced 72 yards tor the score ln holdtng the powertul Bulldog ottense tn check S C led by lack Pttts showed their stull ' Pitts because ot hts good delenstve work got the Wtndbreaker Bonnet SEQUOIA VS. SOUTH CITY South Ctty's Warrtors came ahve tn this game and played like the lootball team they were The strong Sequota football team expected an easy time wtth little South Ctty but were looled Wtth the Cherokees leading 12 5 the Warrtors came trom behtnd to make the tytng score The Warrior eleven wtth one mtnute lelt to play kicked oll to Sequota who returned tt to their 20 yard ltne South Ctty then intercepted a Cherokee pass and ripped through the Sequota defense to the 2 yard ltne where the gun went otl end- mg the game tn a 12 to 12 deadlock Two Bonnets were awarded, one to Ernest Bosst, the other to Chuck Ktllton LINCOLN VS. SOUTH CITY Thts game proved to be one ol the biggest upsets ol the year South City, the 4 to l underdog, made their ltrst score when Abelar, alter a 75 yard march wtth Riggs and Castro sweeptng the end and Rossi and Abelar pick- tng up yardage through the middle, went over tor the Warriors ltrst tally The ktck by Balesttert was good Castro chalked up S C s second score when he took the ball on the Lions 35 yard ltne and made a dash goal-ward lor the last tally ct the day leavtng the score at 13-O Domontc Balesttert was awarded the Breaker Bonnet lor hts near-pertect 'ie- lenstve play which kept the Ltnks lrom chalktng up a score PALO ALTO VS. SOUTH CITY The South Ctty eleven pulled a second upset tn the PAL tn this game when they deleated the Palo Alto Vikings to the tune of a 14-6 sccre lce Abelar and Chuck Ktllton scored to: the Warriors Iohn Petrott received thxs Breaker Bonnet BUHLINGAME VS. SOUTH CITY ln the Warrtors' most heartbreaking game ol the season the South Ctty eleven sultered their ltrst deleat when they tell to a lighting Burrtngame Panther team The Panthers scored twtce tn the ltrst mtnute ol rlay by means ot a long run and an tntercepted pass Abelar scored S C s lone T D maktng the score Burltngame 13, South Ctty 6 The Wtndbreaker Bonnet was awarded to Sam Balesttert because cl his good work tn Butltngame s backtteld SAN MATEO VS. SOUTH CITY San Mateo, a supposedly underdog, upset South Ctty by a score ol 1876 But the score doesnt tell the story South Ctty's only ol tctal 6 points was scored by Gary Riggs who raced 50 yards to pay dxrt Rtggs agxatn went goaleward only to have the touchdown called back Late tn t e tourth period Ernie Rossi tntercepted a San Mateo pass and galloped 60 yards tor another Warrior 6 points. lt, too, was called back For his stellar ltne play Gary Ponttus recetved the Breaker Bonnet. 4 - A- ..- -- K , . . . ,s .
