DECA DEVELCPS THE MIND- Mr. Carl Eakirr Mr. George Norell 24 Our lndustrial Arts training pro- gram is an important part of the public schools program and of the education of the modern boy and girl, Its aim is to give the pupil a background that will help him fit into the Working world, which is the basis of our industrial society. The Journalism course has two pur- poses: to assist the student in reading newspapers and magazines more intel- ligentlyg and to teach correct methods of gathering and writing articles for the newspaper. The school newspaper, Tl-IE BOBCAT, is written and printed by the Journalism pupils, D.E. gives students the opportunity to learn the principles of business and to use on the job. PHYSICAL EDUCATION-THE BCDY Mr, Bill Dalton Mrs. Elaine Tanner Mr. Cliff Gustafson Miss Amparo Ortiz Mr. Earl Lankford Mr. D. J. Scott The Physical Education Department of South San Antonio High School takes an active part in the AAI-IPER. The pur- pose ofthis program is to seek out the physically unfit as well as those of desirable physical standing. Then the goal is to improve the physical status of the unfit as Well as that of the stu- dents of higher physical ability. Students are given a progressive and systematic program of calisthenics and conditioning exercises throughout the year. This program includes: pull- ups, sit-ups, standing broadjumps, shuttle runs, 50 yard dashes, softball throws, and 600 yard run-walk. These tests are given twice a year with physi- cal improvement the ultimate goal. 25
