SAN LIFE AT SOUTH SAN Life at South San takes in many phases of activities. The first picture at the left shows the Bobcat calendar, sponsored by the Stu- dent Council, being brought up to date by Alba Ortiz and Victor Garza. The purpose of the calendar is to keep the students informed about coming school events. The second pic- ture shows a group of Student Council mem- bers working on a homecoming project to boost school spirit. Next in line is a picture showing our fighting Bobcats getting ready for Friday's big game. Finally, a few of the students on their way to class stop to look at a CAT TALE advertisement. The student body, assembled for a pep rally when the feat was attempted, appreciated the group' s efforts. However, it was generally agreed that the boys need a little more practice before they will be ready for the United States Olympic team. Below, it is hard to believe that a short time ago this hall was filled with eleven hundred noisy students. School spirit is a vital part of life at South San. At left, the results of digging deep into closets and imaginations are displayed by a group of Seniors who typified the effects of Crazy Day on the student body. One of the activities of Homecoming Week, Crazy Day was held to promote interest in So. San' s Homecoming game against Uvalde High. During football season the top officers of the classes decorated the goal posts at Bobcat Stadium, in keeping with school spirit. These officers are Tony Levia, Mary Lou Sandoval, Seniors, Paula Morris, Elsie Kerfoot, ,Tuniorsg Sylvia Dominguez, Evangelina Lopez, Sophomoresg Norma Pena, Janie Sosa, Freshmen. While learning to construct and deliver speeches for practical situations, the stu- dents gain poise and self-con- fidence. Emphasis is given to good voice development and the improvement of diction. Extra-curricular speech ac- tivities include senior and junior full-length plays. The University Interscholastic League competi- tion offers additional speech ac- tivities with the one-act play, prose and poetry interpretation, persuasive and extemporaneous speaking, and debate. Our foreign language courses have been enhanced this year withthe use of a lan- guage lab and other audio- visual aids such as records, tapes, film-strips, and arti- facts provided by a Mexico depth study purchased by the Spanish Club of last year. These teaching aids have provided a delightful way to study a foreign language. It offers our classes a chance to learn and practice new lan- guage patterns - meet new people in foreign lands-ex- plore new places-gain new insights and broaden their un- derstanding of a foreign cul- ture. These materials help to make the matter of language study more interesting and each lesson a stimulating ex- perience. Mr. Edwin Kraemer SPANISH Mrs. C. B. Also, each year the choir competes with all the schools in surrounding dis- tricts for a rating. The Bobcat Band stays busy the year round. Activities begin each school year with the football games and continue through marching contest, parades, playing contest, concerts and on into the summer with summer band. The band looks to Mr. Meads for leadership and finds their confidence in him well placed. Mr. Meads GUIDANCE AND SPECIAL EDUCATION Mrs. Pat Campbell Girl's Counselor Mr. V. O. Harp Director of Guidance Todayis society demands that you, the students, make realistic decisions about life goals early in your school careers. There is no one time when you make THE decision. Instead, each year you make a number of small decisions which will either help or hinder you inyour efforts to achieve success. Unless you have some idea of what you would like to do with your life, it is hard to know what courses to study or how far to go in your schooling. The Guidance Department, your counse- lors, and the teachers are available to help you answer these questions. YOU must take the initiative for it is YOU, the inquisitive student, who must seek that you may find, ask that you may be given, knock that the door may be opened unto you.,' Berle Barnett, senior, discusses future college plans with counselor. 'brew STRESS HELP T0 INDIVIDUAL Mrs. Beatrice Richter TEACHER OF HIGH SCHOOL SPECIAL EDUCATION Mrs. Marguerite Jordan COORDINATOR OF SPECIAL EDUCATION FOR THE DISTRICT The Special Education Pro- gram is so structured that each pupil may progress at his own rate of development without com- parison to theoretical norms of others in his group. A child may enter this program when he be- comes eligible for public school attendance. A high school diplo- ma may be issued to educable students upon satisfactory com- pletion of the seven levels of development. , MAINTENANCE AN D The secretaries in Qour school's many offices are indispensable. They are assisted in the principal's office by students who take care of daily attend- ance records and other office work. Equally important are the custo- dians who are responsible for the main- tenance of the school. Many hours of hard work by these men have helped to keep the school in a condition the stu- dents can be proud of. CATS WIN CCDNSOLATICDN AT STATE South San was seeking its 11th straight state tournament win and an unprecedented third straight state title when it lost to the Waxahachie Indians 2-0. The shut-out was the Bobcats' first of the year and the defeat ended a 26-game winning string. It was the first loss in 20 decisions this year for Johnny Guzman, South San's ace pitcher, and his first defeat in29 games since May 1, 1964. It finished his high school career with a 46-4 mark. After allowing four hits and a walk in the first three innings, he re- 218 tired three batters before the fateful sixth, when the Indians got their two decisive runs. Sophomore Nati Salazar doubled with one away in the fourth for South San's lone hit, but he got no further. The Bobcats missed their best chance in the fifth when Robert Arthur got aboard on an error, Guzman forced Arthur, and Casey Sanchez drew his second walk of the game. Herrera walked to load the bases, but Meddie Lomas flew out to center for the third out. The Bobcats scored more runs than they needed but a day late, as they took the Snyder Tigers by a score of 6-2 to take third place in the 17th annual UIL state baseball tourney. It was the 38th win of the season for the Bobcats against 3 defeats, but it was of little sig- nificance as they had lost out on their bid for an unprecedented third straight state title on the day before. It was also their 11th tournament win in 12 starts. Edward Tello scattered 7 hits as he recoreded his 14th win against 1 loss. Casey Sanchez led the way with a single and a double as he went 2for2 at the plate. The Bobcats scored four runs in the first inning on singles by Rudy Herrera and Nati Salazar, each driving in a run, an outfield throwing error, and two walks. In the second inning Sanchez doubled with one on to make it 5-O. An error on the next play made it 6-0. The Tigers' runs came in the fifth on a triple, a single, and apassed ball. Tello retired the first eight players he faced but had trouble in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. How- ever, he managed to get out of it pretty well. In the fourth, the Bob- cats almost scored again when Sanchez tried to score all the way from first on Adam Reyes' single to right. He was tagged out at home. The game starts with a friendly smile, but it doesn't always end that way. At the second annual Junior-Senior Powder Puff foot- ball game, the Senior girls had great moral support from these fabulous cheerleaders. Five brave Senior boys jumped, hollered, and gave chants to lead the great Senior team to a victory!!! YEA SENIORS!!!!!!!! Day is a day no Senior will forget A ranch was the setting for a crazy day of riding, swimming ping pong dancing rides volleyball eating and just about that a group of Seniors could think of themselves.
