Meet Students' Vital Requirements Mensw- Miss Q'tiz uses visual aids, such as television, to aid in the teaching of history. The Social Studies Department of South San Antonio High School includes classes in Social Studies flzreshmanp, World History fSophomoreJ, American History Uuniorj and Civics fSeniory. The purpose of the Social Studies Department is, first, to introduce the students to their role as present citizens and future votersg and, secondly, to give them an understanding of the fate of past civilizations, and the goals of contemporary nations, thirdly, to give students a historical background of the construction of their ancestors to carry on and improve our Republicg finally, to give students an insight into the organization national, state and local government and those factors necessary for a democratic government to succeed. Included in these courses are units on Communism, Income Tax, and Texas and United States constitutions. These courses are supplemented with field trips. Mr. John Ferrara Mr. Wm. Distributive Ed ucotion, Journalism, Mr, Carl Eakin DISTRIBUTIVE EDUCATION Mrs, Sank C, Mayers IOURNALISM Mr, Melvin McFar1ing INDUSTRIAL ARTS South San students are fortunate in being able to choose among elec- tives such as Distributive Education, Journalism, and Industrial Arts. In D,E., as we call it, class groups study school and store relation- ships, store speech, organization, inventory, and store or business math. 'I'his course is open to Juniors and Seniors only: they are in school for four classes daily Cincluding D.EJ, then go to work at 1:00 P,M, The chief purpose in the I.ndustria1Arts department is to give students a basic understanding of, and a working knowledge of, the processes in- volved in general woodworking, metalworking, and drafting. Courses em- phasize hand tool skills and neatness in addition to knowledge of the var- ious machines employed in industries. This in addition to the theory in- volved with the various areas comprised department goals. Journalism in high school has three objectives:to encourage and train students interested in writing: to serve as a medium for building school spirit and publicizing the school activitiesg and to stimulate interest in the newspaper as a force in today's society. The BOBCAT, school newspaper, is published biweekly by journalism pupils. In its twenty- ninth year Csponsored by Mrs. Sank Mayers except for one yearj, the BOBCAT has become a mirror, reflecting the curricular and extra-curricular activities of school.
