Homemoking Education Meets Mony We are indeed proud of our HomemakingDepartment. We have been told by many people who have visited it that ours is the most attractive and best-equipped homemaking department in the city of San Antonio. The South San Antonio Homemaking Department's philosophy of homemaking education is one that encourages the stu- dent, as a member of the family, to continually grow, physically, intellectually, socially, and spiritually. Homemaking education is centered on home activities and relationships which enable youth to assume the responsibili- ties of homemaking as family members today and later as they establish their own homes. The major purpose of vocational homemaking education is to prepare youth and adults for the occupation of homemaking. The program is designed to assist individuals in acquiring homemaking skills and an understanding of human relationships which will help them achieve satisfying home living. Some emphasis may be given to the application of homemaking skills to wage earning situations, and opportunities for careers in the home economics fields. The specific areas of instruction covered at the different levels are: 1. Child Care and Child Development 2. Clothing and textiles 3. Family Relations 4. Foods and Nutrition 5. Health and Home Care of the Sick 6. Housing and Home Management Three years of Homemaking are offered inregular class work, with one credit for each year, I, II, and III. In addition, one may earn one-half credit in each of two summers in Summer Home Experiences in Homemaking, provided she has credit for a year of homemaking preceding each summer's work, making a total of a possible four credits in homemaking. Modern mathematics, its structure and use enables the student to think for himself, teaches him to reason logically, and reach valid conclusions. Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II, for 9th, 10th and 11th grades, Trigonometry and General Analysis for 12th grade adequately prepare our students for the challenge of college work. General Math and Commer- cial Math, which still fulfills high school graduation requirements, permit the student to enter a working world with greater security and ability. One of the annual projects in Mrs. Nichols' classes is making Christmas decorations for the halls and library. The construction of the stars demonstrate the figures done in geometry, as Yvonne Persing learns here.
