If one has found his locker, then he has lost his books. If he has found his books, he has to change lockers. Then after all the bare necessities are found, he finds he has to change his whole schedule. But it looks as though Sally and Carol have found everything and have no problems whatsoever. OCTCBER Student Council Paper Drives The Student Council sponsors a paper drive every month in order to raise money to present the weekly assemblies and to send its members to local and district conventions. These paper drives were usually held on a Saturday morning and all the Student Council members made a great show- ing when they appeared in bright attire to work. THE BAND GOES TO STATE FAIR Mr. Meads seems to be preoccupied. Have you ever play- ed chess ona suit- casewhile riding on abus?Try it! It's fun? In October, the South San Antonio Bobcat Band journeyed to Dallas where they spent three days at the State Fair. The band had made previous arrangement to stay in the Mer Mar Hotel. The Cat Tale staff sponsors the elec- tion of the Hall of Fame each year. To Be An Allmlele ---- 49 .ff 4 5 1 if zur ' l l l E I To be an athlete is a chore. . . but it must be boring, too. Coach Littleton is really telling Pete the horrors of basketball, but Glenn doesn't seem to believe a word that is being said. l N AR One rainy, dreary, slippery night a- bout ten o'clock late in Ianuary, sever- al Seniors attempted to hang a sign. In order to hang the sign and not get it wet was quite a chore because it was approximately twenty feet in length but after careful planning this obstacle was soon solved, by placing two small pieces of wood at each end of the sign and tacking it to the front of the old gym. To add to the suspense of the night, these Seniors weren't quite sure that it was 1egal to put up the sign, therefore they had to be very, very quiet while at their work in order not to disturb Mr. lennings, who was busy finishing his daily work in his inside office. After thirty minutes of careful watch and hard work the Seniors had accomplished the job they had set out to do. For three consecutive years the South San basketball team has acquired the District 14-AAA Championship. This year, however, they made it more ex- citing by tying with the Del Rio Wild- cats and then going on to display good teamwork and good sportsman- ship in acquiring their fourth straight championship in the 14-AAA District. F E BR UARY MARCH THE FIRST DAY at the New SOUTH SAN ANTONIO HIGH SCHOOL The Iunior Play Which Shall He Marry was pre- sented to the South San public March 7. The play was presented in order to raise money for the lun- ior-Senior Banquet. SR-FACULTY-GAME The faculty seems to have set a precedent this year as they beat the Seniors again at the third annual Senior-Faculty Game. The courageous Seniors were defeated by the sharp-shooting of Coaches Gustafson and Drew, both scoring eighteen points. Wilson Mr. Homer Verstuyft Reflections Upon Moving From an Old Home to a New The school year 1956-57 is indeed an eve-ntfulone for the South San Antonio School Community. For the senior high school it marks the end for such use of the high school building erected in 1935. That building now becomes a part of the junior high school plant. The other part of that plant is the former junior high school erected in 1928 as a senior high school build- ing. Prior to l928 the three-year high school was housed with the elementary grades in what is now the three-story Fleming Street Elementary Building. Thus, as of now, the South San Antonio High School is housed in its fourth home within the last thirty years. From the classrooms and halls of these former high school buildings have come our graduates who are now doctors, lawyers. ministers, accountants. authors, teachers, engineers, research scientists, busi- ness men, missionaries, Phi Beta Kappans, Doctors of Philosophy, investigators for the FBI, and civil service employees and in the more common vocational pur- suits, Have you paused to consider your good fortune as you move into your new home? lt has been provid- ed for vou through the efforts of your parents. It will be used first by you, then by your children, and per- haps still again by their children if you and others to follow respect it as you should. The value of this lovely building to you lies in the opportunity it affords you for educational develop- ment. It is architecturally pleasing, functional in de- sign, rich in accommodations and appointments, and capable of sheltering a splendid educational pro- gram. If those who have preceded you as graduates have accomplished so much with fewer buildings and other physical facilities, what will you make of your abundant opportunities in this lovely new home? Morris S. Iennings, Superintendent I 's !' , A X. 1X ,5 .iffy -. f . J '5 Q A -- 3 'M . ,L F 5-of YOUR OPPORTUNITY We are in a period of transition perhaps greater than any the world has ever known. This is true in every aspect of our living--in our community, in our nation, and in the world. We are told, and certainly there is evidence to bear out the fact, that we have before us now the greatest period of progress the world has ever known. This, of course. is possible if we can keep the peace. We have only scratched the surface as far as possibilities with atomic variations are concerned. New industries are springing up, old ones are expand- ing, and better things are offered to us in every field of endeavor. Dreaded diseases are being conquered. we have more leisure time, and everything points to a better life for all of us. ln our community we are keeping pace with the times by providing for our children better school facilities and a better school program. We believe that this is not only our responsibility, but it is abso- lutely essential. You in the Senior High School have available the best school situation any group of stu- dents has ever known in the history of our community. You have 'this because the Superintendent of Schools. the Board of Education, and the leaders in the com- munity spent many hours working, planning and ex- plaining the need for these facilities, and the com- munity voted to tax itself to pay for them. All of the foregoing statements paint a beautiful picture of what the future holds for us. lt is possible only if we in our great progress and great knowledge remember that our Creator makes all things possible, that we are our brothers' keeper and that we as in- dividuals are responsible for ourselves. The opportun- ity is before you. What will you do with it? Cecil W. Williams Assistant Superintendent ' ' aff? dkaaaye Progress is always a mark of education. You who are in high school this year have seen your community expand with almost phenomenal growth within the past few years. You have seen new homes, new places of business, new churches and new schools come into being within your short years in school. You are the privileged group who have lived during this area ot progress. You have the pleasure of being the first group to occupy the new high school building which partially represents this progress in school growth. Not only has our school, through its building program progressed, but great strides in curriculum planning and extracurricular activities have been made. You as students are not only privileged to enjoy these advances, but you are directly or indir- ectly products of these growths. May you who are Seniors this year and who will be going out into the world of new experiences, carry on this same spirit of growth and progress into a life of happiness and usefulness to yourselves and all mankind. May you who are lowerclassmen continue to be a part of this continuous growth and progress in which you have so far participated. To learn many tips and take many suggestions, twenty annual staff mem- bers found their way to an Annual Staff Clinic, October 19, at San Antonio Col- lege. You will find many of these tips in effect as you turn the pages of this an- nual. In order to produce an annual, many must be sold in advance. So the staff began the sale of annuals in November and a total was reached far above any record ever set in South San High. The staff has worked long and hard to produce a good annual so that you might enjoy the '57 Cat Tale for many years to come.
