Third Row, Standing: Fred Lisanti, Bob Fisher, Ralph Waldo, Rod Erler, Robin Groffier, Pat Johnston, Brian Haggerty, SAXCDNS PLACE SECOND WIT The South Salem Football team, a preseason favorite to take the District 8A-1 football crown, began their season with a 20 to 0 win over the McNary Celtics. First District game was against the Sweet Home Huskies and turned into a South Salem scoring spree. With a two game winning streak the Saxon football team traveled to Medford where the Black Tornadors came out on top with a score of 23 to 0. The Saxon's next game was a return bout with the McNary Celtics, this time in league play. The Saxon offense could not move the ball against the much improved Celtic defense but the Saxon defense saved the game late in the fourth quarter, when the Rebels made a goal line stand. The game ended in a 0 to 0 tie. The North Salem Vickings then invaded Bennett Field and handed South their first District defeat. Later the Saxons came up with wins over the teams of Albany and Corvallis. Between these two league games the Saxons added another win to the book by defeating Evergreen of Van- couver. A loss by Corvallis in their final game would have given the District crown to the Saxons, but the Spartins won. South's last game was against
