The annual staff consisted of 18 members and 7 photographers as compared to that of 16 members and 9 photographers in the first year of ,S Saxon history. Tracy Barnes helps sixth grade students at Morningside School. .: ,bg 9-31 The cadet teaching program has been in existence since South opened its doors a decade ago. ln 1955 fifteen girls were cadets at Baker, Bush, and McKinley elementary schools. ln 1964, forty-one girls and seven boys were cadets at Bush, Candaleria, McKinley, Morningside, and Richmond elementary schools, Leslie Junior High, South Salem High, and Oregon School for the Blind. 1956 was the first year that a boy participated in the program. Since that time at least one boy has participated each year. During the years 1955-1957 the dean of girls, Mrs. Lois Brandon, was the adviser. In 1958 Miss Maxine Heringer became the supervising teacher. Mrs. Lida Halvorson, the present supervisor, assumed the position in 1959. Approximately one-half of the first group of cadet teachers became teachers and at least one has returned to Salem to teach. :ll Darlene Blischke works with a group of 5 third grade students at McKinley School. Terry Thompson referees a basketball game in a boy's P.E. class at Leslie Junior High School.
