Over the past ten years, our social science teaching staff has increased in number from three to twelve. Two of the original three, Miss Helen Lane and Mr. Lou DeLoret'to, have taught at South during the entire ten years. ln South Salem's first year, French, Spanish, and Latin were the only foreign languages offered. The language teaching staff then consisted of three, one of whom was Mrs. Leah Smith. In 1961 Russian was introduced, and this year students were offered German. Five of South's language teachers taught full schedules of lan- guages this year, while others interspersed foreign language classes with other subjects. inf A0 Mrs. Eleanor Ellis, Mrs. Donna Lane, Miss Amanda Anderson, and Mrs. Winona Wright. Many teachers have come and gone in South's first decade. The English department, which consisted of 6 teachers in the first year, now is made up of 18. New to the English department this year are Mrs. Margaret Collins, Mrs. Norma Hedberg, Mrs. Donna Lane, Mrs. Sue Leonard, and Mrs. Antoinette Bose. Mrs. Sue Simchuck also taught two classes of English in the first semester and John King assumed these for the second semester. Only three of the present teachers, Miss Anderson, Miss Burroughs, and Mrs. Wright were among those to come to South at its opening. Cliff Girod, Dick Ballantyne, Bob Metzger. Eight science teachers were a part of the South Salem staff in 1963-1964. Three of the group taught here in South's first year. Those three, who constituted the entire science staff in the first year, are Miss Carmelita Barquist, Mr. George Birrell, and Mr. Leo Stenback. A new concept in biology was offered this year through the BSCS course, taught by Miss Barquist. CBA chemistry, a relatively new approach, was taught for the third year at South by Mr. George Birrell and Mr. Perry Spelbrink. Patricia Rynerson, Leo Stenback. fe Susan Irish and Joanne Green. Harry Hinton, John Edmundson, D.J. Rasmussen, Gerald Gilman. South Salem's Math department originally consisted of three teachers, two of whom, Mr, Metzger and Mr. Ballantyne, still teach at South.
