South Rowan is proud of its country heritage - a heritage that many people envy. Bits and pieces of country living are everywhere as more and more people realize that living where there is clean air to breathe, where there is room enough to grow, and where God's creation is always visible is an asset. At South Rowan, love of life, nature, and people shines like the sun on a summer's day inthe country. Like the simple honey bee carries pollenlrmiam one plant to another, rsoiiSouth Rowan'sVcountry pride will long influence other people, schools, and communities. Like the freshness of the new decade, the 1980 Southerner hopes to convey to others the dignity and pride that are South Rowan's. Newspaper Editor Angela Shue One meets his destiny often in the road he takes to avoid it. - Unknown Journalism Editors 5 Journalism students found their task of producing an annual, newspaper, literary magazine, and senior scrapbook a little easier with a two-period block in which to work. Nevertheless, deadlines still had to be met, layouts had to be correct, and with the larger student body, indentification of pictures became even more difficult. In spite of the frustrations, the staff managed to be themselves and enjoy the efforts of their labors. I X Seniors It is 1:00 A,M. and you have listened to Styx change tracks seven times. Your English term paper is due first period tomorrow and you don't have a typewriter. And if you don't think that trying to write like a typewriter is hard, just try it sometime! Finally you dig up an ancient typewriter and begin to type. After five tries you finally get it right- and it's only 3:00 A.M. You'll be able to get at least three and one-half hours sleep before you have to get up. You have just experienced a typical weeknight for a senior. Atthe time of your graduation you will have spent 2,160 days in your twelve-year school career and a total of 12,960 hours in class. You have cheered for the Raiders at 33 football games and watched them take the South Piedmont Conference Championship for two years in a row. When you were a sophomore, there were 457 people in your class. Now there are 311 seniors. But, why not endure? Go ahead and put that term paper in its crisp, new folder and go to sleep. All too soon these high school years will be no more than a fond memory. 18 . F ggayzl nffndlfwn A9441-fm Q at-...tie .ff 'Gi 1 v 3 mg.,-b , X . TS 3' . W I Q cf'-- 9 . s .. ' x , A Letter from Suzy Sophomore of 1979-80 Most scientists will argue that the lowest form of life is bacteria, but any Junior or Senior will tell you the lowest form is a high school sophomore. Being a sophomore myself, l speak from bitter experiences. lt started when my fall schedule arrived C.O.D. I guess lshould feel honored that we had a special area, but somehow, congregating near the smoking patio didn't make me feel too important. As I went from class to class on my first day of school land the 179 days that followedj, I suddenly became thankful for English where everyone else was a sophomore, and where I did not feel self-conscious about my bright orange and purple shirt with the green-striped cuffs and star-spangled banner flip-flops. Next year l'll be a Junior lthank heaven for small favorsj if I survive the 79-80 school year. Somewhere through all the scorn, the hard gym bleachers, and the locker in Timbuktu, shines the single ray of hope - next year l'll be able to snicker at the sophomores. if Played Hookey: James Alexander Teri Allman Michael Bunton Thomas Cannon Danni Cooper Barbara Dukes Chris Heffner Kerry Huntley Darryl Johnson Mark Kemp Juan Neely David Newton Scott Rogers Tammy Simpson Sherry Thomas Robin Wallace James Wetter Charles Williams Susan Wilson Todd Wilson Tim Wise Wendy Wise Timothy Wiseman Cheryl Woodie Richard Wright Debbie Wyatt Scott Wolfe Judy Yost Tina Yost Sophomores 205 Gas was only 42 cents a gallon?
