Known for her ready smile, her sense of humor, and her desire to assist the girls in their physical and moral training, she is never too busy to offer help and encouragement wherever it might be needed. Whether it is teaching her class, helping students with problems, coaching the team, or sponsoring the cheerleaders, she always gives willingly of her time and talent. Through her guidance, South Rowan has en- joyed the leadership of well-trained cheerleaders and the victory of many basketball games. This, the 1968 Southerner, is proudly dedicated to Mrs. Coy Wilhelmg teacher, coach, and friend. Now this is the way it's done. wwf ,L n the Go Toward Teaching Teaching is a rewarding and challenging experience for those who love to teach. Not only do teachers instruct, but they sponsor clubs, keep students after school, attend faculty and professional meetings, collect money for various things, and break up fights. Teachers, efforts are appreciated by the students who show this appreciation by doing the best they can in every class. 13 lim Qlxhx fs-+--a su, Q ,l 'mr r , T .,'?',,v' !lmis....:'1wdf ljpj-1.g.e3 'jfjf. l'5.. ,, 'k k N SRX 3 ,fda M44 1 fig, 1 No problem is too minor to be given serious attention. Now hear this! Mr. McCreary has steered South Rowan suc- cessfully through another year. And though he may quickly change from a joker to a strict disciplinarian, there is one thing that remains unchanged: he always acts in the best interests of the student and the school itself. Late again! Some students always seem to need permits to class. f nlllwwhu . Willing to help students and faculty during any hec- tic day is Miss Trivette. As secretary she guides the school from behind the scenes as she answers questions and solves problems. Sylvia rarely slows her pace and she always has an understanding smile that benefits even the most frantic student. 'I4 MRS. CARLOS BALDWIN MRS. BURTON BARGER MRS. Whether they are preparing for a test on Silas Marner, learning about outstanding American Writers, . listening to recordings of ballads or Macbeth, or writ- ing term papers, students find their English courses varied and challenging. YQ -3 N 5. Es., Q W --ff I A I Medieval England comes alive for these seniors as they begin their study of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. 21 is Q1 sf xv What's a neighbor for anyway? South Rowan's mathematics department offers a variety of courses to math conscious scholars. Alge- bra I, with its abstruse equations and formulas, seems to he utter confusion. Geometry students work with designs and solve postulates and theorems. Advanced math is a combination of modern algebra and trig- onometry. A-492 f, Geometric figures axe fascinating. Students find Mr. Kluttz's explanations interesting. 22 N Concentrate! Study those blueprints! Industrial Arts Industrial Arts teaches students to coordinate the efforts of mind and body. This course provides the architecturally-minded student with the opportunity to learn how to operate architectural tools with pre- cision and accuracy. Studying current newspapers is a part ofjournalism. Journalism Ni Journalism students receive practical experiences in journalism through the publication of the Dixieland Herald. Classroom study, interviews, and visits to local publishing firms help prepare these students to give the student body a paper of which they are proud. A 1 4 We learn the practices of business. Librar Science Q ---N Distributive Education Distributive education provides instruc- tion for those entering occupations which move products and services from the pro- ducer to the consumer. D. E. students have common objectives and interests in that each is studying for a specific career ob- jective. The program is open to juniors and seniors who have the academic background. Library Science students learn the funda- mental skills of being a good librarian. These students help in any way that they are needed. The bulletin boards in the library are always interestingly done by these stu- dents. ina., We promote the efficiency of our Library. 24 The practice for the show at Carnegie Hall? Music Band and chorus offer musically-inclined students activities in which they can express their talent. The band and chorus present programs to the student body and to the public. In addition, the music de- partment also offers to interested students a course in general music. Tw This sure beats going to class. Business Education To prepare students for good jobs in business, the business department offers instruction in numerous fields. Typing students do endless exercises to develop dexterity, accuracy, and speed. Girls push to take dictation just a little faster each day. Bookkeeping, secretarial office practice, and business math courses prepare students to cope with the problems of tomor- row's business. This is Greek to me. We must not hit the wrong key. Physical Education is required of all sopho- h ' 1 Ed ' mores but many juniors and seniors also partici P pate. lkll physical education courses emphasize participation, sportsmanship, and teamwork. 27 :y,. -.sang-8 ' Mrs. Cavin is always eager to help those who ask. QW, Mrs. Cavin advises Linda Nance in selecting a college. Drivers Education Although driver training is not a required course and no credit is given for successfully completing it, almost all students take it. Before the student ever gets behind the wheel of the driver education car, he receives a minimum of thirty hours of classroom instruction. The aim, and the result, of driver training is to produce competent, skill- ful drivers. sl Q is , -M... One of the daily tasks of the counselor is filling out college transcripts. Guidance The guidance department is one of the busiest de- partments in school. Besides the counseling, there are records to be filled out, forms to be filed, and dozens of other duties. Mrs. Cavin takes very good care of this department and everyone enjoys the varied discussions with her. She seeks to understand each student's personality, needs, and problems. She is always willing to help whenever she can. F01lM0T9B,C0? - E LA Tx a.,::c22'W W a ,,, ,,,, fm..-sl R French students prepare French compositions.
