Our Science 'Department The science department endeavors to instill in the students an understanding of the systematic application of the knowledge man has accumulated in his search for truth in nature. The department itself is composed of three major divisions. The first is concerned with instruction in earth science, electricity, and the applied sciences of biology and physics. The remaining two branches include either college preparatory or honors courses in any of the basic sciences of biology, physics and chemistry and require a more involved study of the theoretical aspects of science as well as its various applications. Aiming to inspire its students to learn by their own faculties, rather than mere instruction by teachers, the science department has enlarged and made more flexible its laboratory work requirements. Discovering nature and its workings through individual experiences such as the dissection of a frog or the exploration of waves in a ripple tank is certainly gratifying and interesting. But the underlying importance of this reemphasized laboratory experience is the greater depth of understanding acquired. Mrs. Berg supervises chemistry lab. MtCHAF.I. SCHACK MS. Biology. Our Math 'Department Emphasizes the Zheoretieal and the Practical MRS. BARBARA JOHANNES A. B. Algebra II. Business Math PATRICK McGLINCY B. S.. Calculus. Senior Math Applied Physics Calculus is the limit with Mr. McGlincy. To meet the varied interests and needs of students studying math, the Mathematics Department is divided into two curricula. The first division, which prepares the student for everyday mathematical problems, consists of General Math and Math Review. The second curriculum, intended for the college bound student, offers him five years of math from Algebra I to Introductory Calculus. Triangles, compasses, numerous problems and diagrams introduce the geometry and trigonometry student to the type of math he will encounter later on in school. For the more mathematically inclined, the Department offers an advanced course which places its emphasis not on solving problems but on providing the students with an insight into concepts. Many hours of lecture and discussion help the students comprehend these principles of mathematics. MRS. ETHEL MURPHY B.S. Geometry I V MRS. HELEN OKULSKI B S Algebra I. II 20
