Head of Department English IV MISS BEVERI.Y HOYNOS B.S. English IV. Speech Image Players Having its own distinct aim, each year of our English language course left us with its own lasting impression. Our remembrance of each year's objective and the work encountered reflects our outstanding problems and interests. Our initial year of high school English was full of anticipation as we experienced only a general introduction to writing skills and literature. Along with Pip in the classic novel we entertained Great Expectations. Sophomore year marked the end of our introduction as we extensively cov-ered writing skills and a broad cross-section of literature. Studying Shakespeare's Julius Caesar was more often considered toil than such adventures as Night Flight by Anton de Saint Exupcry. Junior year was devoted to American literature and such famous Authors as Thoreau, Emerson, and Hawthorne. Interestingly, our study here in English paralleled our study of American history'. Writing was even more emphasized as we were required to write formal term papers. Our four year course culminated in a study of English literature with both reading and writing skills still playing integral rolls. Shakespeare reappeared in his Macbeth while other classics as Canterbury Tales by Chaucer were introduced. Our picture was completed by such popular works as The Pearl by John Steinbeck and The Call of the Wild by-Jack London. 14 MRS. MICHEI.E KAHRMANN B.A. English IV Future Teacher’s Association MRS. ELIZABETH A. CHANDO B.A. U.S. History I Junior Red Cross EDWARD COLANTTI B.S.. M.A. World Geography, International Relations Geared to meet our varied interests, the Social Studies department offered a number of courses which left us with an understanding and awareness of the complex world society and how it evolved. We all studied the history of the United States for two years, and many took courses in World History, Geography, Contemporary American Society, and International Relations. Through these courses skills were developed in written and oral expression as we were made aware of the different social, economic, and political systems around the world. We hope to use these skills to play an intelligent and informed role in the ever-changing society in which we live. MRS. To acquire a working knowledge of the modern languages, Spanish, French, and German, the instructors use the audio-lingual method. Together with this study, the department provides an insight into the past and present culture of their respective peoples. In effect, the language students find themselves participating in the practical aspects of the language while appreciating the talents of Cervantes, Rousseau, and Schiller, and the classic Marcus Aurelius. For the student interested in the classic tongue and the history of ancient Rome, a two year course in Latin is offered. Preparing recombinated response drills with Mrs. Kosa. ROBERT KILLIAN A.B. The department itself is composed of three major divisions. The first is concerned with instruction in earth science, electricity, and the applied sciences of biology and physics. The remaining two branches include either college preparatory or honors courses in any of the basic sciences of biology, physics and chemistry and require a more involved study of the theoretical aspects of science as well as its various applications. Aiming to inspire its students to learn by their own faculties, rather than mere instruction by teachers, the science department has enlarged and made more flexible its laboratory work requirements. Discovering nature and its workings through individual experiences such as the dissection of a frog or the exploration of waves in a ripple tank is certainly gratifying and interesting. But the underlying importance of this reemphasized laboratory experience is the greater depth of understanding acquired. Mrs. Berg supervises chemistry lab. MtCHAF.I. SCHACK MS. Biology. Business Math PATRICK McGLINCY B. S.. Calculus. Senior Math Applied Physics Calculus is the limit with Mr. McGlincy. To meet the varied interests and needs of students studying math, the Mathematics Department is divided into two curricula. The first division, which prepares the student for everyday mathematical problems, consists of General Math and Math Review. The second curriculum, intended for the college bound student, offers him five years of math from Algebra I to Introductory Calculus. Triangles, compasses, numerous problems and diagrams introduce the geometry and trigonometry student to the type of math he will encounter later on in school. For the more mathematically inclined, the Department offers an advanced course which places its emphasis not on solving problems but on providing the students with an insight into concepts. Many hours of lecture and discussion help the students comprehend these principles of mathematics. MRS. ETHEL MURPHY B.S. Geometry I V MRS. HELEN OKULSKI B S Algebra I. II 20 Tine Jrts and Guidance. . . M Opportunity for Self-Expression and Realization Mrs. Rosenzweig instructs an art class. Mr. Hitchncr completes a job recommendation. Our fine arts curriculum includes Music and Art. Although neither is a major subject, both provide opportunities for learning, appreciation and service. Given the opportunity to display their achievements, the Music and Art Departments perform a major service to both school and community. Considering our students as individuals, each with his own distinctive character and ambition, our guidance counselors aid them in selecting courses, preparing for college, choosing vocational objectives and in working out practically any personal conflict that might arise. Bookkeeping, record keeping, consumer economics, sales, clerical office practice, and business law make up the general business course. The payrolls, contracts, buying and selling techniques of these subjects help qualify the graduate to enter directly into the business world or continue his business education. MRS. Jndustrial Arts and Home Economics The Home Economics Department offers its students practical skills essential to future homemakers. Fragrant smells from the kitchen constantly fill the halls. Display cases full of needlework exemplify the accomplishments of the girls. Besides offering instruction, the department lends a hand in decorating the school during the holidays, and in catering to special school functions. The coordinated program of print, metal, and wood shop with mechanical and engineering drawing furnished by the Industrial Arts Department gives the boys a well-rounded introduction to the practical arts. Through its program the department provides innumerable services for the school. Allowing the students to participate in individual projects the Home Economic and Industrial Arts Departments furnish the students a preparatory program in the vocational arts. Throughout the year the Physical Education Department attempts to develop the student in both body and character. During gym periods students are provided with the opportunity to participate in team, dual, and individual sports, dance exercises, and calisthenics. Students can also join the various intramural sports supervised by the department. The boys enjoy basketball while the girls' program includes field hockey, bowling, softball, volleyball, badminton, along with basketball. The boys' varsity and junior varsity teams offer the student the opportunity to participate in interscholastic sports. This past spring golf was added to the ranks of football, cross country, basketball, wrestling, track, and baseball. The department sponsors several boys to represent the school in the Marine Physical Fitness Test in the spring. Girls participate interscholastically in basketball and enjoy dance and volleyball Play Days. In another role that is equally vital to the students, the department provides instruction in first aid, driver's education, civil defense and community health. Though offered only once a week, the teachers make maximum use of the time to produce an effective program. In its dual role the Physical Education Department furnishes curricula that have significant effect on the students. 25 Miss Fieseler and Mr. Labudzki check rosters. This year the Student Council has adopted a twelve-year old foster child from India, Esther Kumari. One of eight children, Esther’s education and care is supported by the Student Council’s monthly check to the Christian Children’s Fund. Gloria Martin surveys the main bulletin board set up by the Student Council. 126 Student participation in school affairs and activities is encouraged through the Student Council. Members of the Student Council, who represent the students of their class at the meetings, are elected from every homeroom. The aims of the Student Council are varied, but the most important ones, written in the Student Council Constitution, arc to promote student interest in school affairs, encourage the development of good relations between students and faculty, assist in school management, and cooperate with community agencies and projects. The views and opinions of the students •whether constructive or critical, arc presented and discussed at every' meeting. A particularly active group this year has been the grievance committee, which expresses student dissatisfaction concerning school interests. For the first time, the Student Council has adopted a foster child from India, Esther Kumari, under the Christian Children’s Association. This worthwhile project has been a success, for the student body has taken a personal interest in the welfare of this young girl by sending her numerous packages and cards through the Student Council. Jack Toth and Jeff Golden write S.R.H.S. in the News for the Spokesman, a local newspaper. 127 M. Cienccwicki, President; Elfricda Weller, Secretary; Mr. Losicwicz, Advisor. Christmas Js Remembering . . . Initiated by Mrs. Prentice, the theme, CHRISTMAS IS REMEMBERING was carried through by the student body during the holiday season. South River alumni, now serving in Vietnam were remembered with Christmas packages containing first aid essentials, paperback books and homemade cookies. Throughout the year this remembering” is carried on through the individual letters written by the students to the servicemen. Again this year at one Christmas assembly we remembered a former S.R.H.S. student, Pinky Peterson, who has been incapacitated for several years. Along with Pinky, we included another young boy, Thomas Syers, who because of a tragic accident is now paralyzed. Also in the tradition of Christmas, alumni returned for our holiday assembly to greet old friends and relive memories of their high school years. Vocal groups ft-ftaturals Mrs. Prentice, advisor of the vocal groups, and Barbara Bulger, President of the B-Naturals, pose with Mr. Sivess for official presentation of the courtyard fountain to the school. This occasion climaxed a four year program of money raising projects by the vocal groups. With their purchase of the fountain, the students take a major step forward in the beautification of the courtyard. B. Bulger, All-State Chorus. Wolak; President, L. Greenfield; Director, Mr. Dooley Midway through the football season, the band reorganized and expanded under the direction of Mr. Dooley. Marching with precision during the half-time show at football games, the band lends support to the cheerleaders and contributes to the enthusiasm of the spectators. After the football season, the band concentrates on its performances at the Christmas assembly, the spring concert, and the June commencement exercises. One of the more stimulating innovations was the specialty groups which inspire the crowds at basketball games and entertain in exchange assemblies. 133 The band joins in with the twirlers during the half-time show. When the 1967 football season was starting in that first week of September, there was much talk by the town's people about the ’67 team. Could the)- possibly be as great as the undefeated team of 1966? What could South River do without All-State Quarterback Joe Theisman? Many people had little faith in the Rams, but after witnessing the team's skills in that first game against Franklin Township, the team proved that the '67 season was going to be just as thrilling as the ’66 season. Going into many of their games as the underdog, the Rams, in most instances, battled their way to a victory such as the upset over East Brunswick. With a combination of eleven aggressive men and a powerfully spirited student body, the Rams were able to beat the Bears 25-13. In this game as in the Franklin game quarterback Drew Pearson showed how effectively he could lead his attack. Attempting 25 passes, he completed 17 for 284 yards. He threw two touchdown passes, one to Junior, Ralph Carbone and one to John Scotty Skarzynski. Skarzynski, who was nominated Group 3 All-State end, was on the receiving end of Pearson's passes many times. These two worked together to form a great combo. But another great asset to this game was the superb running of Senior half-back, Frank Wagonblast. Although he carried the ball for only 46 yards on 24 carries, he was doing his best when he was most needed. He crashed through the Bear defense to score two touchdowns. Statistically, South River beat their opponents in every major field. The Rams offensively rolled up 196 points, which is a 22 point per game average, allowing their opponents 105 points, a 12 point per game average. The hard and fine running of backs Wagonblast, John Kaczorowski, Drew Pearson, and Lenny Kolakowski compiled a total of 1275 rushing yards (468 yards more than last year’s team). The accurate passing of Pearson to ends John Skarzynski, Ron Grygo and Tom Csartari compiled a total of 1494 yards (one yard more than the ’66 team). Defensively, the Rams intercepted 11 passes and returned them for 125 yards which is an average of 11.4 yards per interception. Many of these interceptions were caused by the rush of the superb line and by the heads up” playing of Drew Pearson. In the Piscataway game alone, Pearson intercepted 3 passes. For the year the defensive unit allowance only 66.7 passing yards average per game and 141.6 rushing yards per game. A lineman who sparkled on defense was Big Ed Biernacki. Biernacki had to play defense and offense all year and put all his effort into both units. It is no wonder he was elected All-County First and All-State tackle second team. Another lineman who proved aggressive was John Holod, Toward mid season John had to be moved from center to tackle in place of Tom Gizicki. Gizicki was moved to guard as a result of an injury' to Wayne Bartholemew. Holod too had to play defense and offense. He spent more time in the opponents back-field than some of the opponents’ own players. Junior Pete Christiano filled in Holod's place at center and did quite a job. This year's team did prove to be great, but this greatness couldn't have been accomplished without the great coaching of Ronald Wojcicki. Mr. Wojcicki instills a competitive feeling in a young man. He makes a man say to himself If they hit me, that is more the reason for me to hit them back twice as hard. Consistent performances by captain Bill Morgan, junior Russ Susko, and sophomore John Jackson vaulted the Ram harriers over the 500 mark. Morgan, though sustaining various injuries throughout the year, turned in steady performances whenever he ran. Susko and Jackson were the top runners with Jackson placing in the top three in seven of the meets. Other letter winners for Coach Shemick were Matt Rutkowski, Paul Thomas, and Mike Sloan. Losing their first six games, it looked like the Rams' ’67-'68 basketball season was going to be a long one. Last year under new coach Jim Ladlcy the Rams put out a fine 15-9 record. It wasn't expected to be half that good in December '67. However, once the new year arrived, the team started to click with a brand new’ image. Working more like a unit than ever before, they compiled a record of 15 wins and 4 losses, making their final log 15 and 10. A major factor for this success was the outstanding all-around play of Captain Leon Hutch” Witkowski. Hutch sparked the team with a 20.1 average in the point department and an average of 12 rebounds per game. Aside from being an exceptional ball-handler, Hutch ranked 5th in the county in scoring and was elected to the All-County guard position. Other members who excelled in the play were senior Wayne Faust, and John Jackson. Jackson getting a late start proved to be a great asset through his superb rebounding ability, while Wayne proved himself as a playmaker, averaging 6 assists per game. Two juniors who proved to be as good on the court as they were on the gridiron were John Skarzynski and Drew Pearson. Scotty averaged 17 points a game, while Drew provided consistent all-around play, averaging 9 points a game. The highlight of this year's season came in the County Coaches Tournament when the Rams of South River brought to an end Perth Amboy’s 78 game winning streak. This shocked not only the Perth Amboy squad, but also the entire Middlesex County. This was quite a way to wrap up the season. Basketball and bowling are the highlights of the program which includes field hockey and various other indoor and outdoor sports. Basketball, which this year has been on an intramural basis, is composed of seven small teams which allow greater opportunities for each individual member. The popular bowling season starts in late fall and extends to early spring. The girls meet at the Mid-State Bowl for a weekly match. The purpose of the organization is not only to provide a wider scope of athletic activity for the girls, but also to develop the quality of good sportsmanship. Outstanding participants in the program are recognized and awarded letters similar to those received by varsity lettermen. Arlene and Sue hope for a strike. Whether it's a jump ball, a lay-up shot, or control of the ball, basketball after hours is more fun than skill. 190 Miss Fieslcr patiently explains scoring techniques.
