Is it because we feel tradi- tion is a good and stables way of life, or are we simply hiding be- hind a curtain of reluctance? We must emerge from this curtain as individual beings with different ideas and new concepts of living. The time has come when our in- dependence and ability to stand for what we believe becomes a very important aspect of our lives. However, the answer to a better is not complete withdra- 'the customary ways of but instead a combination of heritage and our new con- of living. to meet the chal- 11 Variety of act1v1t1es make life great Approximately 600 students make up the daily life of South Ripley High School located south on Benham Road in the small town of Versailles in the farming state of Indiana which is located in the vastly polluted United States which in turn is located in the densely populated northern hemi- sphere in this war torn world of this dying universe of ours. Our young adults are too skepti- cal you say. I can tell you they are not! They have come to the real- ization that something must be done, not tomorrow or next week but now! A Working after school could mean loneliness. B Bud lefferies includes SR in his busy schedule by taking pictures for the Confederate. 12 Student Life l 17' W U C D E 4. ug, 1 C Bus drivers talk over some unusual hap- pening during their daily bus route. E Space ball adds spice. D Carla Adams poses for photographer. F Suspect for freshman initiation is found en route to school. Student life 13 A student at South Ripley . . . a scholar, an athlete, but foremost a student. What do you have to do in order to be a student? Well, first of all, you get up at 7:22, rummage thru your closet until you find some- thing suitable to wear, grab a piece of pizza, either jump on the bus or in the car and BINGO-you qualify for a student at South Ripley. As you can imagine, once a stu- dent arrives at school, he can usu- ally find something to amuse himself, such as assemblies. A few of the assemblies which con- fronted us were the Marine band, the trampoline act, and the Roar- ing 20's show from Vincennes. Another highlight interrupting this busy day is feeding your face in the cafetorium where many a hamburger has been devoured by human garbage disposals dis- guised as SR students. Still another aspect of the treach- erous life we students lead is tear- ing yourself away from English class to go to the bathroom when you don't have to, or talking the chemistry teacher into letting you go take an aspirin which, at the moment, you don't happen to have. Now, this brings us to yet another way of life. What always seems to be right on your way right when you need it? The General Office. A daily chore for some of us might be stopping in the office for a pass-a pass to go uptown, a pass to get into class, a pass to get a pass! One of the biggest highlights in the student's day is that long awaited last period, not to men- tion the equally anticipated 3:15 bell. The student's life does not end at 3:15. You may stay after school for GAA or basketball practice, or you may have various meetings or activities to attend. ,s N 'MM Y H v- ,jf Students' work is never done 93 L pg as ml Ei: ::7' s me in 1 - , iww,,Q! in in uw! I D F C SR students take time to socialize in the hall before the tardy bell rings. D Sophomore Rick Richmond prepares for Spanish class. E Donna Denny makes good use of her spare time, cramming for a test. F Ioan Reed keeps up with the pace during the change of classes. Student life 15 One of the most unusual and different courses is the high school English classes. The English classes now are not just the old reading litera- ture, doing grammar, and just the basics. We have now gotten into more ex- citing activities like the study of folklore, pan- tomines, theme exchanges with Ball State, and research papers. S It doesn't matter whether you've been here one year or six, at one time or another you have gone to the library. Each individual thinks of the library in a different way. To many, it is a haven of rest , a place where one goes to read or just to think in peace. To others, it might serve as an escape from study hall and last but not least, it is also a great source of information for all. Iu- niors and seniors are espe- cially aware of this fact when research time rolls around. Mrs. Harrell's duties as li- brarian are a hundredfold. Often she ventures far beyond her line of duty to keep SR's ever-demanding students satisfied. Whatever your reason for going to the library, Mrs. Harrell is al- ways willing to help you whenever you need her . . One of the most popular courses offered here at SR is Home Economics. Usually you consider Home EC. an area in which only girls seem to be interested, and although this is true for the most part, there have been many boys who have ventured into this very field and found it both interesting and profitable. What is happening in the world today? What hap- pened yesterday? Answers to these questions and many more can be found in SR's Social Studies Department. Under the able leadership of Mr. Sutherlin and Mr. Rog- ers, the students here can become informed on all world affairs. However, as in most areas there iseroom for improvement. The equipment in our social studies department leaves much to be desired. With the exception of a few globes and maps, our in- structors are left with little more than their imagination. Films are shown to the classes if the teacher is for- tunate enough to find a pro- jector that's in working order. Through the resourceful energies of these two gentle- men, students taking courses in social studies were able to escape the pitfalls of the boredom often found in these areas. Hopefully, through the changes of com- ing years the areas of social studies can become even more interesting and chal- lenging for the students and teachers. Improving the physical fit- ness and abilities of students at South Ripley is just a part of what goes into the physi- cal education courses at SR. Getting a little flabby around the edges? Then per- haps you should go in and join the PE classes of Mr. Feist or Mrs. Helton. - .sits . Q View fm ,J . -,,.- ,i - ... . Tradition plays a large part in any high school. There 'fare the traditional plays at the end of the year, the prom which is a timewhen there lisymuch worry and frustra- tion, and then again there's the yearly graduation exer- cises that bring tears tof the seniors who happen to be part of that graduating class. For many schools, the home- coming celebrations are tra- ditional, but for.SR it was only our fourth. Something that helped add variety to our yearly activities was,-the Raider Follies. This was a talent show which was a first for our school system and gave many students a chance to show their par- ticular talents. The talents ranged from various baton acts, to an invasion from Marsdone to theftune of the Martian Hop. The plays that were presented this year were Mamie's Getting Married and A Time for Living . The latter of the two was the Drama Club's first attempt .at a serious play. It centered around a 17 year-old girl's attempt to adjust to a nor- imal life after suffering ather- vous break down and recu- perating in a mental h:oscpitalJ Thisrevealed many problems young people must cope with today iiflworder to try td become at well adjusted adult. T The play' lvfamie's Getting Married was a comedy based- on interfering- rela- tives' trying to help a young girl fMamieJ find the perfect mate inorder thatwshe woqld nfit become -an fold maid. The fun begins when every- one's ideal selection for 'Mamie appears at the same time iiiuchl td her surprise. Butterflies are Free was the 1973 prom theme. The gym was beautifully deco- rated with mechanical, brightly colored butterflies and the whole effect was set off Myvith My a gorgeous waterfall. M Homecoming festivities were off to a good start by honoring the class of 1970. Their past record was brought to the surface and held sweet memories for all who were involved. Then came the annual crowning of the queen and princess, who in this case were Resa Williams and Vicki Rohrig. The master of ceremonies for the evening was presi- dent of the Student Council, Dick Fuehrer. Graduation held more meaning thant' most this year. The class of 1973 has discovered some- thing far .greater than the' usual reading, writing, and arithmetic. It seems as though I-Ie came' into our lives as quietly and quickly as some people let Him escape. 'T it it K If you haven't decided whornfl refer to, it is the Man in our lives, Iesus Christ. We, being different from most, to succeed in life and have discovered the only way is through the patience and love that can come from above. Without this We would be nothing, Our only regret is that we did not find Him sooner. Yes, there were many tears shed. for various things. i' ii ' l- A B , . x , me V, ,. f - ' 1. This responsibility is a large one in that almost our entire yearbook is financed by the selling of ads. The advanced journalism class which consists of all seniors is divided into groups and assigned certain sections. The areas covered are Aurora, Lawrenceburg, Milan, Holton, Friendship, Madison, Batesville, Dills- boro, Osgood, Greensburg, North Vernon, Hanover, Cross Plains, and Versailles. Then with great courage they all strike out to their areas to convince their cus- tomers that advertising in the yearbook could only be an asset to their estab- lishment. Once in a while they find themselves batting their heads against brick walls. All in all though they usually find themselves in very pleasant surroundings. After all, the teenager makes up a large percent of the buying public. When you stop to think about it, who buys more clothes, cosmet- ics, and hamburgers? The next thing they must do is fill out ad receipts and find out how the advertiser would like his ad in the yearbook. This year the pic- tures for the ad section were taken by a professional pho- tographer. For this extra ser- vice our thanks goes to Ierry Hunter and Beverly Studios. The top advertising sales- men for this year were Darla Fuehrer, Melanie Hatton. Christy Hunger, and jane Spencer. In addition to selling ads, dances, the Raider Follies. and subscriptions have made it possible for the 1973 Confederate to be published. As you can see, putting out a yearbook is not as simple as it may seem. There is much behind the scenes work that goes on in order that our yearbook might be the best possible. And now we can only ask- help support our supporters! W co Q QC Dunbar ond Bultmun Iron Clad Clothing Store DUIFY P1'0dUCfS Clothing and Shggg Owners:Dona1d E. We have attempted to convey this through the theme of our 1973 Confederate, Fragments of New Freedom. Tradition was evident in many ways from traditional clubs and organizations to sports to special events such as the prom and the play to class activities including the chili supper, steak supper and junior concessions. Change was visualized physi- cally, mentally and spiritually. Physically, through the changing of the dress code as students 190 Publications staff ff' -av aa! Mentally, many students excelled as more honors and awards were given at graduation than ever before. Spiritually, many lives have been changed as Iesus Christ came into their lives, Through His love, South Ripley was united in Chris- tian fellowship. A large number of people have contributed to make the 1973 Confederate the best ever. Our thanks goes to Larry Glaze, year- book representative from Para- gon, our photographers-Bud lef- frey from Beverly Studios who many times went beyond the call of duty, and Ierry Hunter for his patience and willingness to take - pictures whenever we needed him and spent many long and late hours developing pictures, Peggy Cox, our outstanding layout edi- tor, for her never ending efforts, she was always there when we needed herg Owen Menchhofer, business manager, for taking charge of the business end of the yearbookg Mrs. Moorhead, our ad- visor, who gave up a lot of her time and encouraged us when we were down, and all the members of the Confederate staff who helped us get it together. Although fragments of tradition still remain, throughout the year 1973 many changes took place and a New Freedom was achieved.
