wuts We have worked, and worked I 1 'l'0 achieve this end. And now the time has come for looking back in wonder of what we have seen and done. And 1'0 wonder di' life. We run softly back to childhood. To all the secret places that are never so secret again in life. x In our minds we see faces, faces, faces. Mr. Vaughn Fuller Even the words of Henry David Thoreau are a hollow tribute to this outstanding member of South Portland High School. In our eyes this man is indeed superior. This personality contains such facets as creativity, friendliness, thoughtfulness, and determi- nation. He takes an active and enthusiastic interest in all activities the year round. Therefore, the Class of '71 proudly dedicates its book to our man ot all seasons, our class advisor - Mr. Vaughn Fuller. s yss, ff . . iii? L E. v 1 .Q 1 1 A 0 A L r v .. Suomi, Titta I come from Finland, a Scandinavian republic. Even though Finland is as far North as Hudson Bay, most Finnish people earn their living in farming and, more recently, in industry. I Finland is a country of forests and lakes. I like Lapland myself with its mountains, streams and rein- deer. It is a wonderful area for hiking and skiing. An important part of Finnish life is the sauna bath. It is the thing I have missed the most during my stay here. My hometown is Kouvola, a modern, rapidly growing railroad iunction. When I go back to Fin- land, I will be there for two more years. After that, I shall leave Kouvola to study at some university - maybe at our capital, Helsinki. The theatre and public library in Kouvola. ,A I The stream Muorravaarakka in Lapland in Northern Finland The town hall in Kouvola, Finland. Typical farm house on the Finnish countryside. South Portland fr 1, , ' A view of my hometown in Kouvola. A winter shot of Lapland - Today, a popular skiing area. My father in Finland is a businessman in a dairy co-operative and my mother is a housewife. I have one sister, one brother and a ten year old dog. Here I have been living with the Coffins. Sue has become a real sister with whom I have shared my experiences. The thing I like most in Maine is the ocean and all that goes with it - boating, swim- ming and eating lobsters. I also like the mountains. I want to thank you all, my family, my teachers and my schoolmates. During this year, especially in the beginning I needed your help so often. And you were ready to help. This year would never have been possible without you. Kiitos, Titta fKirstiD The House of Representatives in Helsinki - the capital of Fin- Lake Saimaa - one of FinIand's 60,000 lakes. land. g Q - Frankfurt, Germany After three months of anticipation, I received my family papers and I was bound for Austria. On July Ist, I departed for New York. I spent the night in New York with 180 other students. The evening of July 2nd, we flew to Frankfurt, Germany. From there we boarded a train which took us to a Youth Hostel in Upper Austria. Here we spent one week learning German and the customs of Austria. On July 10th, our group of 51 separated and we left for our host families. I arrived in my village, Sil- Iian, where my Austrian family greeted me. Sillian consists of 2 thousand people who are mostly farm- ers. It is situated on the Austrian-Italian border. I lived in a hotel run by my Austrian parents. My mother tended the hotel and my father operated a wood-exporting business. Both my sister Ingrid, and my brother Otto had had 2 years of English which helped me, because I could speak only basic Ger- man. AFS Summer Youth Hostel in Upper Austria My Austrian family - Ingrid, Otto, Mutter and Vater. View of my Austrian village - Sillian in Austria .eg My Austrian sister - lndrid and I in front of our home. Augugt 15th - National Austrian holiday. I Innsbruck, Austria. Castle in northern Italy. During the summer Ingrid and I enioyed swim- ming, bicycling, and travelling. Our travels included a visit to Venice, Italy and to Innsbruck, where the winter Olympics were held in I964. Before I knew it, the time had come to leave my family. I'll never forget the great time I had with them. The next day, I left by train for Vienna. Here all the A.F.S. students met for five days to tour the city. We saw the famous Opera House, the Parliament, and the United States Embassy. The Eve of September lst, we boarded the train for Frankfurt, Germany. We arrived there the fole lowing day to meet the A.F.S. students who had stayed in Germany. ' Later the plane ascended for the 8-hour iourney home. My A.F.S. summer doesn't end here, for it will al- ways be with me. The l97O spring track team had an out- standing season winning Il meets and losing only one, climaxing the season by winning the State Championship for the first time in 19 years. School records were set by the 880 relay team of Rick Berryman, Mike Ames, Ed Moulton and John Kierstead. Lonnie Flake vaulted I3 ft., for another SPHS record. Coached by Bill Blood and led by team cap- tain Lynn Giglio, the Riots also tied for first in the Westbrook Relays and placed third in the Clipper Relays at Portsmouth. Fine perform- ances by senior runners Mike Ames, Ed Moul- ton, and Lynn Giglio, Junior ace John Kier- stead, plus the outstanding sprint perform- ances of sophomore Rick Berryman f9.9 sec- onds for 100 yd. dashi help account for our fine season. ln the field events, Scott Cool- broth, Jim Hews, Hosea fZekeJ Carpenter, and Ed McAleney dominated the shot and dis- cus events in the State, scoring over 18 points in the state meet alone! The team won numerous honors. They placed 6th in the New England Championship, were the runner-up in the State Single and Doubles Tournament, and they were the Maine League Champions. The team lost to Hebron Academy in a scrimmage at the beginning of the season, but succeeded in defeating Hebron 5-4 for the league championship, showing the team's definite improvement during the season. Seniors John Greslick, Brad Landers and Sven Strnad all competed along with Jun- ior Barry Brado in the NE Championships. Sophomore Paul Peterson, the 413 player, was the most consistent winner in outside matches. Sophomore Bill Kayatta, Junior Arthur Strout, and Senior Rick Milliken were evi- dence of the depth of the squad. With the return of such fine players, next season should prove to be quite successful. l l Kneeling: Paul Peterson, Steve Jones, Scott Butchart, Alan Basford, Jim McPhillips, Lincoln Fuller, Frank Robins, Ben Thompson, Scott Summers, John Haley, Mark Aitkenhead, Bill Seymour, Brad Landers. Led by team captain Steve Morang, the team showed great spirit in a building year. Although the team will lose two seniors, Steve Morang and Rick Thibodeau, the bulk of the team will return next year under the leadership of Mark Di Pierro. The team was marked by determined runners such as sophomores Bill Mclntyre and Mike Linscott, iuniors Frank Riechert and Bob Lewis, and senior Rick Thibodeau. Steve Morang had a remarkable final season by winning the Valhalla x-country championship, placing third in the South-Westerns, and 8th in the state. He missed placing in the NE by one second. This year he broke his school record in the 2M mile run by 30 seconds, lowering it to l2:49. The i970 Fall Tennis season saw 36 boys participate daily in an intramural type set up, as opposed to the varsity and interscholastic competition in the spring. Peter Debe- voise, Riot tennis mentor for the last l3 years, coached the squad which was com- prised of players of various skills. The group was divided into two sections, with inter- squad competition in each section daily. Players who would likely comprise the varsity team in the spring also competed informally against several college freshman teams. 'I'I0 The Top 16 The top sixteen players according to abilities comprised the upper half of the squad, which was quite well balanced. The varsity team competed -informally against UMP, the Bowdoin Freshmen, and Exeter Academy JV's losing 7-2, 5-4, and 7-2 respectively. However, there appeared to be potential for con- tinuing South Portland prominence in State Schoolboy competition in the spring. ln the final school tournament at the end of the season, top-seeded Chuck Bourke and Dave Kayatta defeated Arthur Strout and Bill Kayatta 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 in doubles, with Lincoln Fuller and Mark Aitken- head winning the tournament among the second group. ln singles, second-seeded Chuck Bourke upset Bill Kayatta 4-6, 6-4, 6-l to take top honors, with John Rolfe, the winner in the second group.
