70 j “O.1.L.” is not only the fifth con- secutive musical that Helen Roberts, SPC professor of speech and drama, has choreographed and directed at South Plains Col- lege, but also her second original play. “In doing these musicals, I’ve had some of my most enjoyable moments in directing,’ says Mrs. Roberts, whose directorial efforts since 1977 have included “Oliver!,” “Mame!” “George M!,‘ “Black Rose,” and ‘“O.I.L.” For Mrs. Roberts, the musical is ‘a labor of love. There’s an element that seems to come home to me,” she feels. In the eight years that John Har- tin has been a naturalized Texan, he has absorbed the grit, the deter- mination, the survival instinct of the state, particularly that of the oil industry. In this year’s musical Hartin’s goal was to capture that essence in the origional music, lyrics, and arrangements for SQ) lkeon A small orchestra performed Hartin’s compositions. The or- chestra was made up of Dan Han- son, percussion; Ed Marsh, fiddle and vocal director; Tim Mc- Casland, steel and banjo; Randy Ellis, bass; and Hartin, guitar and director. James Morris James Morris, first year trach coach at SPC, was named National Junior College Track Coach of the Year by the National JUCO Athletic Association. The announcement came as a Surprise to the SPC mentor who “really never expected the award to go toa first-year coach.”’ Less surprised by the award were those who watched several of Morris’ thinclads turn in outstanding performances at Nationals. Alan Moore, a sophomore from Hughes Springs, broke three national marks in winning the 10-event decathlon. Teammate Lance Bingham, a sophomore from Meadow was only 20 points behind Moore, in se- cond place. SPC also took the top three places in the shot put. Sophomore en Matney recorded a winning toss of 55-7. Glen Calvert of Flomot was second and Mike Williams of Olton was third. Dennis Trottier, a sophomore from Quebec, Canada, finished fourth in both the long and triple jumps. Lub- bock Dunbar’s walk-on Ray McNeal took fifth in the 110 high hurdles. Freshman Kevin Lyons was second in the 400-meter hurdles. Overall the team finished in fifth place. James M. Carroll Long-time agriculture teacher James Carroll retired at the completion of the 1983 school year after 15 years at South Plains College. Carroll began his teaching career in 1950 as an in- structor with the Hockley County Veterans School. He taught in the Estelline, Floydada, Whiteface, and Lub- bock school systems before joining the SPC faculty in 1968. The Professor of Agriculture Technology served as Chairman of the Agriculture and Industrial Technology Department at the college. He earned both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Texas Tech, and did graduate studies at Texas A M.
