A very familar face came home to Levelland on Dec. 17 to have his dream come true. ‘Rockin’ Robin Blake fought the main event in the Texan Dome before approximately 3,100 people. To say that Blake was well recieved is an understatement. The crowd treated him to a thunderous two and one-half minute ovation upon his introduc- tion, which came with the accom- paniment of the tune “Rockin Robin,” and the theme from “Rocky”’. Blake fought Chris Calvin, of Nashville, Tenn., the distance for an unanimous decision win. Calvin was 9-1 with seven knock-outs to his credit, while Blake was 15-0 with 10 knock-outs. Blakes last three wins were all over top 20 rated contenders. For Blake, the entire evening was an emotional experience. Blake dedicated his fight to the memory of his cousin Derl DeAr- mond and close friend Tony Willians who lost their lives in Separate accidents. Blake also presented a $500 contribution to Nancy Price to go towards the maintaining of the Levelland Boys Club. The fight was tough for all con- cerned. The two boxers displayed contrasting styles, which made the fight an interesting contest. Calvin was the slugger, while Blake used the counter-punch to achieve his victory. In a telephone interview Blake commented on the different styles, “Calvin was a slugger, which | am not,” he said,‘‘so | did what | had to do to win.” The life of a boxer is not all it ap- pears to be. Robin spent rigorous hours preparing for each bout. “‘l spend about two hours in the gym a day training and the rest of the time doing road work (running and exercising)’, said Blake. Blake is still undefeated in his professional boxing career, even after his last bout with Rubin Munoz, a top 10-rated contender. Blake scored a TKO in the final round, giving Blake a birth into the top 10. Story and photos by Terri Frehulfer. Photos from the Blake-Munoz fight in Lub- bock. |
