by Greg Moon The care of SPC athletes and their injuries has taken a revolu- tionary turn since last year. This turn is mainly due to the efforts of Michael Celli, the head trainer here at SPC. Since Celli’s arrival last spring, the facilities have improved remarkably. The training room has increased in size threefold over the summer. The immediate ap- pearance of the room itself is somewhat shocking, as are the many complicated pieces of machinery that are used therein. Two of those devices are new items that have changed the very methods of care and recovery. The first of these is the Jobst Cryotemp. This implement is used in mainly in treatment for injuries with large amounts of swelling. The machine runs cold water through large tubes into a sleeve that is wrapped around the swollen area. With the combined effects of the cold and the pressure, the swelling is diminished con- siderably. The increasing pressure forces the blood from that par- Athletic Facilities ticular region and puts it back into circulation. The other apparatus that has dramatically changed the training industry is the Galvanic Nerve Stimulator, or GNS. Coach Celli, as ne is called by the athletes, has stated that this piece of machinery “Has revolutionized training, we have cut recovery time in half with this piece of equipment.” To galvanize something is to stimulate or shock it with an elec- tic current; that is just what the GNS does. This one piece of equip- ment does the job of whirlpools, ice and heat. By putting a negative current through the muscle, the blood flow is increased. This speeds up the healing process. The current is much more effective than heat, this is because it treats the entire muscle, not just the sur- face. By using a positive current the blood flow is decreased. This decreases swelling much more ef- fectively than ice. Another advan- tage to the GNS is that it prevents atrophy of the muscle. If an athlete cannot function in a normal fashion, the GNS will exercise his muscle for him. This is done by the electrical impulses causing the muscles to contract on their own. These two instruments have been used not only by athletes at SPC. Several other schools and persons from this area travel here to use these machines. Coach Celli is by far the most important part of the training pro- gram here. Celli is a graduate of the University of Texas, where he was a student trainer for four years. Proceeding that, he was a student trainer for four years in high school. Celli certainly knows his job and he has changed the perspective of our programs here. SPC is one of three junior colleges in Texas that has a trainer. Celli has certainly turned a few things around. “As far as equipped train- ing rooms are concerned, we are better than most four-year schools,” said Celli. ‘In fact, I’m sure we have the best facilities of any junior college in the nation.” Celli seems comfortable in his position. “I just go by the old baseball player saying ‘I’m just happy to be here.’ ”
