Text from Pages 1 - 208 of the 1983 volume:

On May 5, 1958 the Levelland Daily Sun News’ lead story read, “A fabulous agricultural and petroleum region, which in the span of 37 brief years has sprung from the vast empty ranch country of the fading old west, enters a new era in 1958 with the establish- ment of South Plains College at Levelland.” This year is South Plains College’s 25th anniversary. Our anniversary slogan--“Silver Horizons” signifies the idea of reviewing the past, while looking forward to serving the South Plains’ citizens in the next quarter century. No two alike “College students. They’re all alike. When they’re not skipping classes, they’re drinking or stirring up trouble.” Stereotyping college students prov- ed easy for anyone who observed them from afar. But students, themselves, knew that a “typical” college coed did not exist. Ages, morals, beliefs, tastes, and backgrounds combined in 1,902 ways to make 1,902 different SPC’ers. Even in the obvious groups of cowboys, preppies, slobs, beauties, and beasts, one could find a variety of individuals ranging from seven- teen to eighty-seven years old. “| found that meeting people was a fun way to add to my education,” commented freshman Patrice Cowan. From the inside view, no two SPC’ers were alike. To curl or not to curl was the question that faced many girls like Esmeralda Torres every morning. It’s not easy being a college stu- dent. | mean now really, the obstacles that the average college student has to go through just in the dorm would make even a marine proud. Let me explain just One aspect of the life of a typical resident of, oh, well, Lamar Hall. The morning starts of with the gentle sounds of AC-DC echoing softly off the cold walls at 7 a.m. in the beautiful morning (courtesy of the room next door). Instantly the eyelids explode open, exposing the eyes to the harsh rays of the sun shining through the window. Next comes the argument between the inhabitants to see who gets the first cold shower. After the shower the occupants practice hand-to- hand combat for the use of the sink. Once the dressing ritual is completed, it is off to breakfast and (if not already late) class. Seriously, that is just a small part of the the adventure that is called dorm life. There are other aspects like the life long friends, the ever so sweet dorm moms, the outrageous fun, and alas, even the studying. All of these are parts of the greatest college experience-- the dorm adventure. 28 After Years o by J. Dale started to school when she was seven years old, and had a story to tell like most people: “I went to school in a two-room building, and had to walk several miles to school.” But after two years in school Dale’s family mov- ed to Winert, Texas where she went on to complete her first of many steps in education. After high school, she attended North Texas State University in Denton for three summers, and then transferred to Texas Tech where she received her AB, BA, and PhD, all in English. To say that Blake was well recieved is an understatement. The crowd treated him to a thunderous two and one-half minute ovation upon his introduc- tion, which came with the accom- paniment of the tune “Rockin Robin,” and the theme from “Rocky”’. Blake fought Chris Calvin, of Nashville, Tenn., the distance for an unanimous decision win. Calvin was 9-1 with seven knock-outs to his credit, while Blake was 15-0 with 10 knock-outs. Blakes last three wins were all over top 20 rated contenders. For Blake, the entire evening was an emotional experience. Blake dedicated his fight to the memory of his cousin Derl DeAr- mond and close friend Tony Willians who lost their lives in Separate accidents. Blake also presented a $500 contribution to Nancy Price to go towards the maintaining of the Levelland Boys Club. The fight was tough for all con- cerned. The two boxers displayed contrasting styles, which made the fight an interesting contest. Calvin was the slugger, while Blake used the counter-punch to achieve his victory. In a telephone interview Blake commented on the different styles, “Calvin was a slugger, which | am not,” he said,‘‘so | did what | had to do to win.” The life of a boxer is not all it ap- pears to be. Robin spent rigorous hours preparing for each bout. “‘l spend about two hours in the gym a day training and the rest of the time doing road work (running and exercising)’, said Blake. Blake is still undefeated in his professional boxing career, even after his last bout with Rubin Munoz, a top 10-rated contender. The at anernceneistosiaNe NS ARE Profile i of a recordbreaker by John Hasselmeier Whoever said records were made to be broken knew SPC decathlete A.J. Moore. Moore, a native of Hughes Spr- ings, broke three records at the Angelo State Fall Invitational, which was held November 19 and 20. The records he broke were SPC decathlon records in the long jump (23” 1 1’) high jump (6’10’) and first day total points with 3973. In addition, he also tied a school record in the 100 meters with a time of 10:9. This tied a record Moore had already set. Moore aiso holds some records at Hughes Springs. These include the high hurdles. In addition to these honors, he also received regional honors in three events. He also received Outstanding Trackster in District. He was also decorated in foot- ball, being an All-District defensive back. He also set another record, since broken, with a 97-yard in- terception return for a touchdown. The return came against Winn-: sboro. His senior year, Hughes Springs tied the number one team in AAA, Mount Vernon. Some of the notables Moore has met include Detroit Lion running back Billy Sims. “Hooks (Sims’ high school) is in our district. My brother played against him. | also met Byron Linwood (strong safety at TCU) and Billy Olson,” Moore said. Olson currently holds the world indoor record in the pole vault. Moore’s athletic career started in the fifth grade, when he started running track. “I’ve always been faster than the average person and | like running,’ Moore stated. Dur- ing his career, Moore ran in events in Louisiana, Oklahoma and Arkan- sas. Hughes Springs is within 100 miles of these three states. After high school, Moore was recruited by Arkansas Tech in both football and track. Texas Tech and Stephen F. Austin wanted him strictly for track. East Texas State and Lamar wanted him for football. Moore decided on Texas Tech because he likes West Texas. “I used to visit my brother out there and | fell in love with West Texas,” Moore recalled. ‘I like the sunsets and everything seems so clean and open.” But Moore soon left Tech. “Things didn’t work out there and | was about ready to quit. Coach Ramsey (who was t he SPC track coach at the time) heard about me and gave me a _ shot.’ Moore remembered. In last year’s Junior College Na- tionals, Moore finished fifth in the decathion. “| should have done better,’ Moore stated. “I was third until the last two events.” Moore has some lofty goals for this season. ‘| would like to score 7400 points in the nationals this year. | would also like to make the 1984 Olympic Trials.” Top left: The cross-country team in action. Photographs by: David Jones by Greg Moon The care of SPC athletes and their injuries has taken a revolu- tionary turn since last year. This turn is mainly due to the efforts of Michael Celli, the head trainer here at SPC. Since Celli’s arrival last spring, the facilities have improved remarkably. The training room has increased in size threefold over the summer. The immediate ap- pearance of the room itself is somewhat shocking, as are the many complicated pieces of machinery that are used therein. Two of those devices are new items that have changed the very methods of care and recovery. The first of these is the Jobst Cryotemp. This implement is used in mainly in treatment for injuries with large amounts of swelling. The machine runs cold water through large tubes into a sleeve that is wrapped around the swollen area. With the combined effects of the cold and the pressure, the swelling is diminished con- siderably. The increasing pressure forces the blood from that par- Athletic Facilities ticular region and puts it back into circulation. The other apparatus that has dramatically changed the training industry is the Galvanic Nerve Stimulator, or GNS. Coach Celli, as ne is called by the athletes, has stated that this piece of machinery “Has revolutionized training, we have cut recovery time in half with this piece of equipment.” To galvanize something is to stimulate or shock it with an elec- tic current; that is just what the GNS does. This one piece of equip- ment does the job of whirlpools, ice and heat. By putting a negative current through the muscle, the blood flow is increased. This speeds up the healing process. The current is much more effective than heat, this is because it treats the entire muscle, not just the sur- face. By using a positive current the blood flow is decreased. This decreases swelling much more ef- fectively than ice. Another advan- tage to the GNS is that it prevents atrophy of the muscle. If an athlete cannot function in a normal fashion, the GNS will exercise his muscle for him. This is done by the electrical impulses causing the muscles to contract on their own. These two instruments have been used not only by athletes at SPC. Several other schools and persons from this area travel here to use these machines. Coach Celli is by far the most important part of the training pro- gram here. Celli is a graduate of the University of Texas, where he was a student trainer for four years. Proceeding that, he was a student trainer for four years in high school. Celli certainly knows his job and he has changed the perspective of our programs here. SPC is one of three junior colleges in Texas that has a trainer. Celli has certainly turned a few things around. “As far as equipped train- ing rooms are concerned, we are better than most four-year schools,” said Celli. ‘In fact, I’m sure we have the best facilities of any junior college in the nation.” Celli seems comfortable in his position. “I just go by the old baseball player saying ‘I’m just happy to be here.’ ” rsapnceninceanss — : a er . 2 3 | Opposite page, top right: Tommy Perez.
