A Good Friend Retires After ten years of dedicated service as Direc- tor of News and Information at South Plains College, Mrs. Maurine Elkins has retired. Representing several firsts at S.P.C., she was the first News and Information Director South Plains employed. Mrs. Elkins was also the first member 'of the administrative staff ever to re- tire from the college. . During the fall at a surprise reception held in her honor, Mrs. Elkins was presented a large desk clock by Dr. Baker, President of the col- lege. The clock was a gift from the faculty. At the reception, Dr. Baker expressed his apprecia- tion and the feelings of many when he said, This is a first for South Plains College and it gives us an opportunity to thank you, Mrs. Elk- ins, for all you have done for the college. Since the beginning of the college in 1958, Mrs. Elkins has worked hard building good pub- lic relations and establishing news presentations which have aided very much in the growth of the college. After graduating from Temple High School, Mrs. Elkins has held various positions during her journalistic career. Some of her experiences have been: Women's Editor for the Sealy News, correspondent for the Houston Chronicle, the Fort Worth Star Telegram, and the Avalanche Journalg and Women's Editor of the Levelland Daily Sun News for eight years. Among her other duties, Mrs. Elkins has served as sponsor of the college newspaper, The Plainsman Press. 5 ,' 'gf 197
