QMaurinej Elkins have often heard this comment. Good memories are treasures worth keeping, the only treasures we really have forever. For students and faculty, Mau- rine Elkins and good memories are synony- mous. Always true to her favorite expression she has made South Plains College a vital and meaningful memory for many students. She greets her vistors with a smile that says 'Tm interested in you. South Plains students sense at once the sincerity of her inquiry May I help you? Her love for people stimulates her interest in Journalism, a career that spans a very active 28'years. Her eyes sparkle as she recounts the names of former Plainsman Press staff who have moved on to successful careers in Journalism. . Mrs. Elkins retires in January, completing a 10 year period as Director of News and Infor- mation at South Plains College. She has served the school and community well as faculty advi- sor to the Plainsmen Press. Other areas of community service include serving on the Board of Directors of Senior Citizens Organi- zationg working for United Fund, Heart Fund, Cancer Fund, and other fund drives. Mrs. Elkins is an active member of First Baptist Church of Levelland, South Plains Faculty of Women's Club, Honorary member of Theta Epsilon Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, Advisor of Kappa Psi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi. Her work in Journalism included 10 years as Women's editor of the Sealy News, correspon- dent for Houston Chronicle, Fort Worth Star Telegram and Lubbock Avalanche J ournalg Women's Editor, Levelland Daily Sun News, 8 years, articles printed in various magazines in Texas and New Mexico, editor of The Mes- senger, Texas Junior College Teachers publi- cation, 8 years. Mrs. Elkins has one son, Dr. Floyd S. Elkins, Academic Dean of Hinds Junior College, Ray- mond, Mississippig one granddaughter, Kathy, a sophomore at the University of Southern Mississippi., , Mrs. Elkins looks forward to retirement as a time to continue writing, collecting antiques, and enjoying other hobbies that include bridge, handwork of all kinds, knitting, and reading.
