Tracksters Among Be 'Track promised to be an impressive success at ,South Plains College in 1972 but an early deadline forced us to take a look at the cinder sport in advance. , South Plains finished 14th in the nation last spring thanks to a national title in the 440 hurdles by Eddie Eberhart and a sixth place finish by the mile relay team. Team members were all Freshmen and all return this season - Buckie Thompson, Phil Allen, Eberhart and David Rodrifglez. To recap the '71 season and take a look at the upcoming season, SPC track coach lint Ramsey, also Secretaiiy of the National Junior College Athletic ssociation Track and Field Coaches Association and editor o its publication Track And Bar, contributed the following article: . Track fortunes at South Plains College made an upward swin in 1971. For the first time in the his- tory of the school the Texans had a first team All-American. Effdie Eberhart, from Sundown Won the National Championship in the 440 Intermediate hurdles and tied the J NCAA record at 51.9 The Texan mile relay team of Buckie Thompson, Phil Allen, Eberhart, and David Rodriquez finished 6th at the na- tional meet giving SPC a fourteenth place finish amonglover 100 teams entered. Eberhart and Allen ranked one and two in the JC 440 urdles most of the season with best times of 51.8 and 52.9 respectively. Going into the nationals Allen had the seventh best time in the 120 high hurdles at 14.4 Other Texans ranked nationally' included David Rodriquez 17th in the 440 dash at 48.8 and Ramon Lopez 9th in the pole vault at 15'. he mile relay had a season best of 3:15.7 which ranked 7th among JC s in the nation. Allen was the tcgm point winner for the season claiming 99115 ptsq At the Texas Tech Relays he won three 1st place me als and at the conference meet he placed in seven events. Eberhart finished first in the intermediates and set meet records in 8 out of 10 meets entered during the season. School records were established in the pole vault fLopez 15'j, high jump CJohnny Tubb, Allen 6'4 J, long jump CAllen 22'61fQ l, Javelin fTubb 1580, Two mile run fKevin McPeek 10:13J, Mile run fTim Hartman 4:21.3J, 880 relay, mile relay, two mile relay, and distance medley relay. The distance medley turned in a fine per- formance at the Texas Relays with a time of 10:11. Team members were Ro riquez, Bobby Boggs, SEASON OUTLOOK The Texans look forward anxiously to the ,coming season. Returning lettermen include Eddie Eb- erhart and Phil Allen which should make the team double tough in' these events. The mile relay fAllen, Thompson, Eberhart, and Rodriquezj returns intact after a 3:15.7 performance last Rear. Rodriquez was a so the conference runner-up in the 440 dash last year. Fifteen foot pole vaulter amon Lopez is back for another year as is Johnny Tubb who scored in the high jump, high hurdles, and j avelin last year. .. 'n-'W McPeek, and Hartmann. Top newcomers include Ron Penny state run- I ff.: ' ner-up in the 100 yard dash from Arundel, Mary- land. Penny also anchored Arundel's mile relay . to the State Chamgiionship. , K Career bests for enny include' 21.3 and 47.89. ' Another addition to the Texans is weight man James Maki, transfer from the University of ' V' New Mexico. His best high school marks were 57' ' and 162'. He has thrown the 16 lb. shot over 50'. Dennis Smith, half miler had a best time of 1:55.7 for Amarillo Tascosa last year and could give detpth to the mile relay. Jimmy Nelson from y idlan ,Lee also adds depth in the mile relay and should score in the 440 dash. R ' The Texans should be able to put together a fine 440 relay with Penng Thomcvpson, A len, Eb- erhart, Rodriquez, and avid olightly, fresh- man from Levelland.
