Munoz Wins Local Race Cross Country, a relatively new sport at -SPC, enjoyed instant success last season as the Orange Distance Men Won the confer- ence title. This year, the fall of 1971, the defense of the conference standing fell on an outstand- ing pair of freshman recruits andseveral de- pendable returning sophomores. Leading the freshman pack was Galveston ball recruit Rudy Munoz. Rudy represented SPC Well in winning the South Plains meet with an outstanding time of 20:30 on the rugged Levelland country club course. Dennis Smith, another outstanding fresh- man, Was a dependable point getter for the Texans in the distance races. Smith was re- cruited from Amarillo Tascosa. Dependable and proven sophomore re- turnees included David Rodriquez, Phil Allen, Billy Boggs and the national interme- diate hurdles champion Eddie Eberhart.

'v SPC Golfers Provide Respeotable Competition Coach Bill Powe1l's golf team showed flashes of supremecy in the fall round of the split season round robin play. The SPC golfers compete in a conference schedule that is split into fall and spring rounds. At the end of the fall play South Plains stood in third place in conference standings. The highlight of the fall was undoubtedly the Texans impressive showing at the E. J. Workman intercollegiate golf tournament at Socorro, N. M., October 22-24. Of the 18 colleges and universities entered in this outstanding tourney, South Plains finished behind nationally ranked Universi- ty of New Mexico. Arizona State University, Texas Tech, the defending Southwest con- ference champ and New Mexico State by two strokes.
