Mvlv' lg 'z,,i. will, xx llsl' ' iliwli 0' f T L' vp-I .- . . I -an Alpha Phi Omega, the National Service Fraternity for college and university men, has organized a chapter on the South Plains College campus. Alpha Phi Omega QAPOJ was founded at Lafayette College in Pennsylvania in 1925, and today it is the largest national service fra- ternity with over 400 college and university chapters. Since its found- ing more than 110,000 men have joined APO, and among its members have been many distinguished Americans including United States Senators, state governors, presidential advisors and cabinet officials and a U.S. Astronaut who took an APO pin to the moon with him. Because Alpha Phi Omega is a service fraternity, its major func- tion is to render service to the campus, community, chapter and na- tion. Each chapter tailors its program to its own campus and commu- nity. The purpose of this fraternity is to assemble college men in a na- tional service fraternity in the fellowship of the principles of the BSA to develop leadership, to promote friendship and provide service to humanity. It is emphasized that APO is not a Boy Scout organiza- tion and does not require that its members have been scouts in the past. Membership in Alpha Phi Omega does not imply all Work! The fra- ternity offers many chances for social as well as service activities. Mixers, dances, picnics, and parties . . . plus fellowship and service functions . . . are an integral part of the chapter program. s 7: t Jim Womack Rex Brooke Mike Box John Gresley Charlie Reasoner David Mill er Kenny Bryan Vayland Van Cleeve 7 df, J A 'UQN The Press Club is comprised of the members of the Plainsman Press staff, students of journalism, reporters of various organiza- tions, and people Working on college publications. The basic constitution of the Vo- chais Club has four major functions: to attempt to get ,more Black stu- dents to enroll at South Plains, to enable the Black student body to have a voice in various college activitiesg to su ort and arouse spirit for Black atiiietesg and to serve as a social out- let for Black students. In order to eliminate any doubts about its reasons for forming, the :lub placed various protections against overthrow, misuse, and misin- terpretation of its purposes in their constitutional b -laws. She, after correspondence With over 100 colleges and universities, hosted the national Women's meet here in the Dome the same Week- end the men's nationals were going on in Wrangler Gym in Odessa. The responsesto her letters and participation was lean. South Plains won the national title. To compete the girls had to trav- el hundreds of miles. No schools in the Western Junior College Athlet- ic Conference suited a team with the exception of Odessa. Little Toyua Lee was the only talent the Wranglers could boast. Freshmen Learn Trlcks The TCIAW gives the reason for its foundation as the need for a more centralized executive body of inter-collegiate athletics for women and because of the increased awareness of the need for en- couraging the development of program for the highly skilled woman athlete, an area long neglected by professional physical ed- ucators. It was formed October 5, 1968. But the TC law has one rule that prevented two returnees for the outstanding SPC team of last season from competing in the state meet at Tarrant County. No scholarship recipients are al- lowed to compete. TCIAW outlaws scholarships. Thus South Plains College's womens' gymnastics team will be a club instead of a recruited, skilled, highly experienced group of athletes working under financial. contract. The two returnees who competed for South Plains at all other meets this year except the state TCIAW, are Carlsbad, New Mexi- co product Ginger Inman and Marvana Cave of Levelland. Ginger was recruited out of high school after winning over 100 events, medals and meets in all areas of competition in New Mexi- co - one of the leading states in the nation in high school gymnas- tics. Marvanna joined the gymnastics team last season at mid-semes- ter after performing in the Tex-Anns in the fall. Her talent was noticed in Physical Ed. classes and at Levelland High. She pro- gressed quickly 'in work-outs after joining the squad. Thus these two sophomores' major task this season, in addition to competing and getting points, will be to instruct and motivate the basically Freshman volunteer team. Ginger is team captain. Toni Brown is another sophomore from Levelland who competed this year from the team of last season. She holds 12 years of expe- rience - 10 in dance and two in gymnastics. She will work on the balance beam and in free exercise. All three will compete in the Southwest Texas State University Invitational Meet Feb. 26 at San Marcus and in the SPC Invita- tional Meet March 18 in Texan Dome. p Coach Spears' nucleus for next season's team lies in Freshmen Jeniece Robertson, Debbie Hammerle and Janice Benham. Unlike the team members of last season with most members and especially the primary point getters possessing years of high school gymnastics, summer camps and dance lessons, neither Robertson nor Hammerle have any experience, and thus face an impressive challenge in preparing to compete against such experience. Both, however, have already, according to Mrs. Spears, shown considera- ble progress. By the middle of next season she feels both will be outstanding all-around performers. Both have been cheerleaders for four years. J eniece, at Smyer High School and Debbie at Garland High School. Miss Benham, a graduate of Levelland High last spring, adds ex- perience in the Freshman troupe. She has participated in gymnas- tics two years at LHS and was president of the Gym Club at LHS. She also has eight years of dance. She will work on the beam, vaulting and in free exercise. Pam Huskey is another Freshman on the team and will work on the balance beam. She is from Lubbock. Kathy Kirkpatrick is a Sophomore who joined the team at mid- semester after performing with Tex-Anns her Freshman year and during the fall semester. She should develop into an all-round per- former. Ginger has competed in gymnastics for eight years in all four of the Olympic events. While in high school she performed on the New Mexico state championship team for three years, as Carlsbad High took the state title three years straight. She compiled a mound of individual victories in high school and last season as a Freshman on the best gymnastics team South Plains College ever suited. 130 CTop Opposite! Ruthie Daniel Secretary to the Dean nk! 4 it -J' A Academic Dean Tubb Today's youth are more interested in- personal goals and personal fulfillment than in materialistic things. They are not as dollar-conscious as my gen- eration was, says the president of the 1937 graduat- ing class of Levelland High School, South Plains Col- lege's Academic Dean Nathan Tubb. I was in a class of 33 when I graduated, and though I would not want to advertise the fact, I think I was a typical American boy. Like the Ole Dean said, sitting on a disciplinary council brings back fond memories. I had no idea of being a junior college administra4 tor while in college or even two or three years before South Plains was established. South Plains began something when it was estab- lished and I have enjoyed being a part of the progress and forward looking attitudes. A junior college had not been built in Texas in ten years when SPC was established. Since its founding or the past 15 years the junior college has really come into focus. The junior college continued Dean Tubb, pausing to relight his ever-present half-smoked cigar, is strictly an American institution. It was founded through the needs of Americans. The university we borrowed from Europe. Born near Tahoka, Dean Tubb moved with his fam- ily, four brothers and one sister, to Levelland in 1921. Levelland was one store and ranches all around when We arrived. My father was a trucker, farmer and real estate broker. We five boys never had to make the decision to go to college, we just accepted it as the next step to con- tinuing our education. The depression impressed on me that to get out of the ditch, education was virtual- ly important. And I certainly don't want to go back to the good ole days. Today's generation is too exciting. Before arriving at SPC in 1958 Dean Tubb served as superintendent of schools at Pep and Whiteface after serving in World War II and receiving his mas- ters degree from Texas Tech in 1949. He received his B.S. degree in business from Southwestern State Col- lege. Until five years ago he served as both dean and registrar for SPC. Says the Dean, the youth today are bigger, better, more realistic and even better morally than they have ever been. By Danny Ellington sa!-J . . His claim to fame is that he is the first grandson of the Administrative Dean of South Plains College, Dean William L. Hi Walker. The other three grandchil- dren are Tari and Tami Tyler, 7 and 3 years old respectively, and Daphne Ed- wards, age 3. They are important too, as are Dean Walker's wife, Nina Rose, and his daughters, Mrs. Sandra Tyler and Mrs. Diane Edwards, but, well, you know . . . Dean, Walker keeps the college operat- ing as an organic unit. He is efficient, or- ganized, decisive - but understanding. It is his responsibility to see that faculty, staff, and physical facilities at the college operate for the benefit of all, and the smooth operation of all these elements speaks for itself. Dean 'Walker was born near Fayette, Missouri, in Howard County. During World War II. he served in the Naval Air Corps, spotting enemy subs from a blimp flying off the west coast of the United states. His education includes . under- graduate work at Central Missouri State College and West Texas State, and gradu- ate work at the University of Texas and Colorado State College. He taught in vari- ous public schools for seventeen years be- fore becoming an administrator. He has been Administrative Dean at SPC since 1960. His wife Nina Rose is an ex-teacher, having received her degree in Home Ee from Texas Tech. Dean Walker has served for a number of years on the Administra- tive Board of Levelland's First Methodist Church, and has just ended his term as Chairman of that board. Dean Walker says his hobby is still playing at golf, but his most important job is still entertaining those grandchil- dren, and especially his new grandson, Dane. Registrar Dr. Sylvester To provide an atmosphere which encour- ages learning, is one of the main objectives of SPC Registrar, Dr. Charles Sylvester. He be- lieves that at any level, in the strictest sense, the teacher cannot teach, but can only help the student to learn. The only function of this office, avows Dr. Sylvester, is to be a service to the students. If we fail to perform this service, We fail in our responsibility. Dr. Sylvester's concern for young people is shown in his devotion to his own family. He and his Wife, Hazel, have three daughters. They try to plan activities in which they can all be involved.
