The 1976-77 boys' basketball team enjoyed a relatively successful season. They were plagued by injuries throughout the year and the tragic death of Bernie Cisseon last summer. Nevertheless, they played well as a unit and were rarely out of a game. They have a great deal to be proud of. Bob Lanza and Rich Columbus were the captains and they provided an example for the rest of the team with their hard work. Bob also led the team in scoring while Rich completed this third letter-winning year. Rich Nolty and Mike Berkowitz were the remaining seniors who played well throughout the year. Rick was a pleasant surprise. Bob Pellegrino was the second leading scorer on the team, and he joined Bob Lanza on the first team. He should have a great senior year. The other juniors who contributed to the success of the team were Ed lnsel, who improved steadily and was the main rebounder, Keith Murphy, who should have a great senior year, joe Rocky Scarpitto, who was always ready off the bench to do his part. The team was rounded out loy Mike Sikanowicz, Doug Smith, and jim lnsel. These boys always did what was expected of them and they should do well next year. lt is hoped that the seniors will have a successful life, and the jun- iors will work hard to make South Plainfield a winner next year. Capt. Rich Columbus shows how he leaves his opponents behind him as he goes forthe baske-t.
