E... - :UQ - my Fm-ns Wg A win Velasquez lead the 1976 After a slow start, the football team got it all together to win four of its last six games. As stated by Head Coach Matticola, a 3-0 loss to Bridgewater East, and a 7-6 loss to j.F.K. kept the team from turning in a 6-3 season. Two of the Tigers' losses were to Somerville, and powerful Wood- bridge. The team was spearheaded by a stingy defense, which allowed only 8.6 points per game. The defense was led by seniors Mark johnson, Erwin Velasquez, and Bob jackson and junior Scott Dudak as the top backs, C. j. Sakevich and joe Mantz as senior flankers, Tom Behr as senior split end, and seniors Chris johnson, Frank Halloran, and Rich Chi- rumbolo as top tight ends. The Tigers then placed fourth in the area in total defense. As the team season progressed, the Tiger offense started rolling, averaging over 200 yards per game. The Sturdy offense was led by seniors Sal Severini, Eugene Green, Erwin Velasquez lTri-Captainsj, Troy Ginecki as center, Don Mazellan as tackle, senior Ken Helgesen and junior Mike Sikanowicz as monster backs, joe Mantz, Brian Kelly, and C. j. Sakevich as deep backs. The highlight of the sea- son was the10-6 victory over Piscataway. The Tiger offense rolled up 288 yards to defeat No. Plainfield 20-8. The final Mid-State standings found South Plainfield in fourth place with a 4-3 record. To sum it all up, the T976 condition of the S.P.H.S. Varsity Football team had vastly improved.
