What do you remember most about SPHS ? Thats a questton that w1ll be asked time and time again In 1957 the first class of senlors graduates from South Plainfield High, and of course each one will remember something different But then theres so much to remember When this years Junior class first entered SPHS the school wasnt even finished Memories of lockers for the first time new friends and teachers and best of all a brand new Junior High School On through eighth and nlnth grade there wa something new every day some new memory to add to an already bw collection Toward the end of their freshman year, plans were started for the Senior High School And, up to now the years have been so full of memories tts hard to count them all Perhaps you remember best the poems writ ten ln freshman English for Mrs Slnclaxr, the ones about the bulldozers Or Mrs Glasss original home makmg periods Could be the cafeteria audltorlum gymnaslum we had Bet the girls remember dresslng for gym in the kitchen' How bout Latm I tn the Sophomore year Or our first baseball team More recently we can add our first football basketball, and golf teams Memories no one will ever forget You cant forget the half sessions and leav mg out of the fun of biology would be dlsas trous This year will yield many memories For we have a complete high school And a most wonderful one too The gym is something no one w1ll ever forget nor the classes, dances or school rmgs Soon the memory book will be complete There ll be a senior prom, the senlor play, graduatlon class trip and so many more to add Of course its imposslble to forget the teachers Although we dont reallze lt now they have helped us to become better people and better citizens A FRESHMAN DREAMS .lust plcture a new modern school with a huge picture window facing the street I front of this wmdow IS a lawn of soft green outlmed in colorful flowers A huge oak tree on one side of the lawn throws its refreshing shadows mto the wmdows From the left stde of this spacious lawn a paved drive way leads tnto a large parking lot As you descend from your car to the paved sldewalk and walk to the rear of the school your eyes gaze upon an enormous playmg field used for all the sports you can thlnk of Bleachers outllnc the field to seat all the spectators that come to watch us wtn at football base ball archery you name ll we have lt The school ls rectangular tn shape and has a court yard in the center Cant you Just see paved sidewalks leading to all doors? A lawn of soft green with the klnd of grass that feels like a nch carpet beneath your feet Trees bloommg and throwlng soothing shade every where Flowers here and there Do you have this picture m your mind? Good' Now look around you The school we waited so long for can be just like this dreamy picture But lets not walt around to see lf trees and flowers, parking lots and grass are gomg to pop up by themselves Grass seed costs very little when everyone chips tn There must be some future gardeners among us who want experience 214401125 JUNIOR YEAR WELL WHAT KIND OF YEAR HAS IT BEEN? Well for sure this has been a new year Everythmgs been new New pupils new teachers even a new bird' Never saw so much new furniture n stuff did you? We got a new date to enter school This we found led to a new out date the 27th Oh well September also brought us the most terrific guidance director in the state of New Jersey You bet' Mr lrlon' The Thanksgxvlna dance was not a new ldea, because the GAA sponsors 1t annually but our new cafeteria became the scene of this Moments to Remember fantasy Gold and black were the colors remlmscent of Miss Price s alma mater Purdue Joe Hoffman and hls decorating genluses went crazy the afternoon of the Christmas dance Anyone who went w1ll tell you that lt was the first time that red and green streamers ever looked as if they had gotten mixed up with that mongrel who just had a fight with a tiger ln a hurrlcane It was fun though January brought green snowflakes or was it Just that the patrlotlc eyes of SP saw them this way? We did adopt our hlgh school col ors green and whlte then you know Sprang sprung spring snowballs? ? Remember' 'Vlarch 16th Even tho tt was sprlng everyone was glad to miss those two davs of school When Mr Romeo, our band director left he left behind the memory of our lovely Sprmg Concert Snrlng dld Reign through the snow April 21st thanks to the PTA Flrst dance to be held in the gym Journalism students groamng with misery all year turned into TV celebrities April 28th as they took part 1n Paul Brenners Requestfully Yours show Although the show was over at 200 most everyone was out tlll 6 Wonder where they all went? Johns dance in 'Slay fthe Ilthl was a great success Johnny Buczek his Mello Tones and a lot of others worked mighty hard to ward thelr goal The spirits and the profits showed their triumph An remember the day m the cafeteria that o n came back? We surely were glad to see rm T e first Junior Prom for the class of 57 was a success We sometlmes wonder lf those palms would ever have been there or the splrlts quite so hlgh lf ll hadnt been for 'Vfr Richard June brings back The Great Pretender pretenders who think they ll pass school Hope pray why not study? We dld get a few Clbraltars moved this year though We produced a sailor and a marxne fDave n Timmy? got John a leg persuaded Mr Swxdersky and Mr Richard to let us hear radio durmg X period and got Miss Prlce to cut her hair How bout I at We ve also discovered experts ln many fields Our delightful soprano Patricia Ream sang us to dreams at both of the years musical performances Danny Splsso will probably someday be a. great pianist but right now we have him here and hes makmg SPHS jump The Capri too by the way' Congrat ulatnons Dan' Our golfers naturally are the best ever Karr Conroy and Smith really brought us fame Cager Henderson had a good score in that contest We know he does pretty well on the court too so keep up the good work for our senior class Dale Looking ahead to -Kugust we see 'Nfr Lobby and his wife on a super honeymoon Some of the kids are working off at camp or loaf in Mr Swldersky IS gettlng a rest ID some quiet place Nfr Carbonettis sitting in the shade of a tree reliving h1s army days and playing potsy And there its a big fire' Mrs Sm clair' What are you dome? Shes burning every school newspaper 1n sight' Especially Tiger Talk Well guess we really dont blame you its a wonder you have any halr left But it s been worth lt hasnt lt? SENIOR YEAR Welcome back to a beautiful new SPHS Did you recognize the old building all spruced up with graded grounds and growing grass? It lb a wonderful change But thats not the only thlng how about the condition of the court yard? We actually have a beautl ful green carpet of grass ln there now No more worrying about slipping off the slde walk and losing your life 1n the oozing mud But that doesnt mean you can step off the sidewalks now Lets give that grass a chance' Have you seen the new driveways and side walks all around the school? Thls IS great big lmprovement When the drives are completely paved the grading will be finished and then we have a high school with the best ap pearance in the state of New Jersey Lets consider the mslde of SP HS because quite a few changes have been taking place there too There are many new teachers to welcome to our high school Judging from thelr opinions of the building they think tts just as wonderful as we do There are many new students this year also They probably feel at home already And speakmg of stu dents have you notrced how many .Iumors and Seniors are drlvlng this year? Most of the Senior boys have their own cars We cant go without mentioning the httle thlngs that were added thls year to make the day more pleasant Music 1n the cafeteria at lunch time is a wonderful ldea and so relax mg Seniors have a lot to be grateful for thls year thanks to Mr Cook and especially to Mr Dallmg Plans are in the makmg for graduation the senlor class play senior trlp and lots of other events too numerous to mention Another thing added this year that provided a bright spot in the day is clubs durmg pe nod five An Art club Monogram club Safe ty Patrol beside the regular CAA and B AA 'Vlost of the senlor boys are members of the Flre Squad There are many more new activities at SP H S this year all for the benefit and pleasure of the students So if anybody asks you, S0 WHATS NEW? you should have a quick and ready answer PLENTY' n . . . ..
