xjlfsiorcy of fAe Class 57 As you read this can you think back to the Freshman Year Do you remember who our class officers were? Do you remember the dances the baseball team and maybe some of the Honor Roll members? Our class officers were as follows Judy Hale president and some of you may remember Teddy Wlellchoskl our vice president Terry Andrade was secretary and Diane Tlbaldl treasurer One of the ltems discussed most was the graduation for that year Other plans were those of the class trip and the Freshman Prom Those of us who had Mrs SlIlClBll' for English during that year had to write the poems on the bulldozer that was tearing down the trees to make way for the extension of the new school Four poems made the Blue and Gray The Bulldozer by Bob Colburn Little Tree by Doug Austin Leaves by Claire Hodge and Angelica Gumtas The Sad Death of the Trees Re member? The annual Christmas Dance held on Friday December the 18th 1953 sponsored by the PT A was a big success ln charge was the newly organized Student Council Some of the people on the Committees were Judy Hale Helen Spaziam Bette Knaupp Jimmy Smith and Dale McBride The Freshman Class elected Bette Knaupp as Mayor of South Plainfield The pos1t1ons of the counctlmen were given to Lols Ftsh Carl fBuddyl Naegle Judie Boettger Dale Hen derson Barbara Weiss On Feb llth Carl Naegle and Diana Tlbaldl of the Freshman Class were elected Klng and ueen of the school Hey Joe Hoffman can you remember what Hablllment IS? You said you? The Freshman boys played baseball for the first time ln competttlon with other high schools James Smith and John Buczek were elected Co captains in April of 54 Tom Somoskl was the Mana er That season the boys wound up with a record of six w1ns and three losses A freshman was honored by having her em hlem chosen to adorn the school flag Patricia Spalluto Pat s drawing of a Tigers head with a scroll and wings was adopted as the school s official emblem That year also brought to the school a new piano a TV set and a staff and flag was presented to Mr Oldls our school principal We had many more dances such as the Cinder ella Dance with Buffet Supper set up as a night club 53 54 also brought new teachers such as Mr Stllo and Mr Jarrett The Freshman Prom was held in the cafeteria on Friday May 21 The girls wore formal gowns and the boys wore whlte dmner Jackets w1th dark trousers The cafeteria was decor ated tn pastel colors while streamers hung from the center of the ceiling leading to points around the room The tables were arranged in night club fashion On Thursday June the thlrd the Freshmen enjoyed the trip up the Hudson It was a per fect day There was dancing while music was piped over the boats PA system Then the stop at Hyde Park to v1s1t the Roosevelt home library and memorial Then back on the boat and home Then before we knew it Graduation night Wednesday June 16th 1954 at elght oclock ln the Grant School Auditorium The theme was the Beginning for we were to be the first class to go all the way in South Plainfield High School Some of the speeches that nlght were given by Joseph Hoffman The Builders lois Porcella On Being First Donna Grego How We Are Different and Peter Seller Our Future That night awards were given out to Patricia Spalluto for Citizenship Dominic Tufaro for General Improvement John Buczek and Pa tr1c1a Orrico for Athletic Achievement and the Science Award went to Sylvia Kozimbo and William Vanderbilt We were to come back ln the year 54 55 as South Plamfields first Sophomore Class GRADE 10 54 55 This IS the year we began by being the first Sophomore Class in South Plainfield This was also the year we had those wonderful half day sessions We attended from eight ln the morning to 12 30 ln the afternoon Joseph Hoffman was our G 0 President The tenth grade brought to us two foreign lan uages Spanish and Latin Mlss Doris Cerwin taught Spanish and Miss Hilda John son taught Latin Many trips were taken Some of these were the Basketball gamts at Nladison Square Garden and the Roller Skating trip on March 12th The Phys Ed department received a letter from Ted Steeles Teen Bandstand asking lf we would like to appear on his show We answered joyously and were rated the best group The Phys Ed department gave a dance as semble with most of the Sophomores partlct patmg The P T A gave a formal dance entitled Paris in Spring All the decorations had a French theme That was the nlght when Joe Hoffman and Connie Schiavi played the moroccas Eighteen members of the baseball team brought their record to seven wins seven losses and one tle under the coaching of Mr Frank Jost Richard Evans was manager and Wllllam Coluccl captain While we were workmg hard ln our class rooms bulldlng was going on on the addltlon of the school This was the year of the Kats ln the Sopho more class pegs DA s and collars up More dances such as the Cheerleaders Dance Km and ueen Dance and the Thanksgrvtng Dance were held Many acttvltles that we wanted to carry out during that year were blocked because of the split sessions But lets take a look at 55 56 GRADE 11 55 56 Even though we welcomed a new principal Mr Edward Glbbs 3rd and were put under strlct ruling our school accomplished a lot of firsts A JV football team under the coaching of Mr Harold Wyckoff and Mr Anthony Cotora was very good Another first was the JV basketball team coached by Mr Kenneth Wolfe who departed from our school at the end of 56 It was a good year for a team Then the gym had to be ripped up twice 1n a row in order to have it built correctly First the floor warped then it was the piping A newcomer appeared the second Elvis Pres ley Ronald 4Redl Dardzinski who performed in the play Our Town Moments to Remember was the theme of our first dance held ln the new cafeteria The tables were set in night club fashion while a big ball hung from the ceiling and streamers were hun from it We were almost let out of school by a bomb scare ln that year we adopted our high school colors Green and White Although lt wasnt official our teams had worn green and white during football and basketball Then came the most exciting time for the Journalism class We produced TIGER TALK our first organized paper with columns and all Poor Mrs Sinclair the adviser and teacher went crazy every time the paper was due Be sides that she had to put up with four clowns Bob Andre Muggs McBride Roger Mooney and Joe Donaruma Now how long did it really take you fellows to travel from school to where we had the paper printed? Spring brought two days off from school and sixteen inches of snow On April 28th the Journalism class was ln vlted to the Paul Brenners Requestfully Yours show On the show Gall Anderson won a Webcor tape recorder for the school by ln tervlewmg the singer Merv Griffin and by writing the best artlcle on the interview What happened between the time the show was over and six oclock The golf team won South Plarnftelds first trophy James Smith Lester Kaar Al DeRosa Dave Conroy and Doug Austin Their record thirteen wins and one loss Mr Lawrence Car bonetti coached The Arthur Murray girls played the South Plainfield Wrecks with Mr Carbonettl not showing up The Wrecks won of course Then came the Junior Prom lt was a huge success with all those palms and everythlng Mr Richard kept our spirits very high SPHS sent three delegates to All State ln New Brunswick The delegates were Gall An derson Judie Boettger and John Buczek School was very dull C95 for that year wasnt lt? GRADE 12 56 57 In our last and final year we welcomed to our school Mr Benjamin Cook principal and his assistant Mr Paul Dalllng. Besides the new prlnctpal and his assistant we welcomed twenty new teachers All spoke com mendably about the school and the students ln Tiger Talk The Football team ended with a 2 5 1 record for this year The drivers of student cars were faced by a big problem about where to park until the new principal settled ll for us The Student Council put on our first big dance Officers for this last year are Presldent Pat Spalluto Vice President Ed Horel Sec retary Judy Hale and Treasurer Angelica Gumta This dance had the theme Dog Patch and Judy Hale did her fine tmpersona tions of the Abner family The top pos1t1ons for the yearbook were filled tn Judy Kelley and Gall Anderson have been chosen editors in chief The speech class under the direction of Mr Barley made a hit with their play Chrlstmas Trimmmgs Those who starred were Joel Peney Ann Graham and Helen Spazlam The driver ed class received its car on Nov 15th Who got the first ride Judy Cairns or Ro er Mooney? The pep rally and the burning of Mlss Canuck came on the day before the Thanksgiving Day game The Monogram Club held its dance in honor of the football team on Dec 7th Then we ended school for Christmas Holidays with a dress up day carollng and a play Somebody raced against a copy deadllne to end his school for ten wonderful days of sleep . f 6 , , - vw r 41 - sv . . , .
