i' Welcome to South Plainfield4A Pro- gressive Community. These blue signs meet the motorist on many of the roads leading into our boro. But is South Plainfield really progressive? Let's take a look. Seven short years ago, the area which our school occupies was a barren field. The Board of Education purchased the land, had plans drawn, hired laborers, and performed the numerous other tasks involved' in building a school. The field became a Junior High School. But this was not good enough for the board, pro- gressive, farsighted, far-thinking men as they are. They made plans for a bigger and better high school, equipped with a gym, shops, and all the facilities a high school needs. Kipling once said, It's not the work of one man that brings us to the goal, lt's the everlastin' team work of every bloomin' soul. In our school lives we often forget these worthy sentiments. There are always a few people willing to sit back and let the other fellow do it. But let's take a look at this other fellow. You know the type. He's the guy who sells one- half the tickets to the big dance, or the guy who writes half articles for the school paper. But no matter who the other fellow is he's no superman. Who's going to sell the other half of those tickets? And who's going to finish the rest of the school paper? Why, every bloomin' soul, of course. One person cannot carry an entire organization to the goal. It takes team work. And every person must contribute to the effort toward the common goal. A person with a high intellect can easily graduate from high school. But gradu- ation is not achieved entirely through his own efforts. At many points in his high school term this student has un- doubtedly received a helping hand from a guidance counsellor, a teacher or some other person. You don't reach the goal of graduation by your own efforts alone. Students are lifted from grade to grade by the everlastin' team work of every bloomin' soul. And we will be lifted from rung to rung up the ladder of life in the same way. And now the light's dim, the audience falls into a respectful hushg not a sound is heard. Suddenly into the bright spot- light step the future citizens of South Plainfield. Arrayed before the stars are their stepping stones, the present citi- zens of our town and now their awed audience. Graduation for these first seniors of South Plainfield High School means to them opportunity, success and a lifetime of happiness. For here before them lies their bright, unmarked future. The world is theirs. Many will go on to college, business school, or other institutions of higher learning, and just as many more will remain here in South Plainfield to work and start their futures with a new, fresh, and interesting job. Our community is in the Big Time producing goods and services and spectacular opportunities for those who work in the beautiful modern factories and laboratories here. South Plainfield is both an industrial and a residential town. It has offered and will offer much. It has raised its collective voice in say- ing, We're in the Big Time now. South Plainfield High School and its future citizens are a cog in the progress Of South Plainfield. Through the team- work of our school and the student body, South Plainheld will surely be- come a progressive community, xgnio fAe ig ime 5
