BEAUMONT To a person who nas listened to our most distressing problems, aided us in our hours of need, and has planned for us from our entrance to our exit or finale the many activities we have participated in, Mr. Arthur Beaumont-we dedicate this KEEPSAKE of January 1960. Act I-Our sophomore year saw the vast planning he was engrossed in for us. It was our most distressing termg we were confronted by a new school and a new form of education. Many problems arose, all easily solved by his confidence' inspiring personality. Act II-The center of our second year saw our miseries subdued by the learned Mr. Beaumont. It was the unfolding of our most remembered Jr. Prom, Moon Glow. I hope that I have been of service to you. As a parting word of advice, let me suggest that you promise yourself to live up to the Optimist Creed- To be too large for Worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble. All of you have my best wishes for a long, healthful, happy, and successful future. JOSEPH J. Rossi Principal Six x alumni? 5' Good morning, boys and girls. This is Dr. Wasserman. This morning I have a few reminders for you. How many times have we heard this during the past three years in Southern? Too many times to count, that is for sure! Dr. Wasserman is responsible for our public address system in school and has been delivering the goods during almost every advisory period! If not for him and his daily gossip, how would we have known about our various meetings, responsibilities and the approach of the next early day? His administrative ability was obtained from a rich background of intellectual accomplishments. Among his degrees are a B.S. and M.S. from the City College of New York, and a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. In addition, Dr. Wasserman has ex- perienced the sponsorship of a school newspaper and a dramatics club prior to his career at SOUTH PHILADELPHIA HIGH SCHOOL. DR MAURICE WASSERMAN As one or our three vicefprincipals, Dr. Caporale has various duties and obligations which she performs with the intelligence, eiiiciency and understanding of a conscientious person. She seems never to tire and is always ready to lend a willing ear to listen to students' tales of grief or joy or to offer her guidance with the nu' merous extrafcurricular clubs and activities enjoyed in our school. Her other duties also include the administration of the school. Dr. Caporale's high school education was obtained at none other than SOUTH PHILADELPHIA HIGH SCHOOL for GIRLS. Her next step was Temple University where she obtained her B.S. degree. , Her next accomplishment in the Held of education was made in the University of Pennsylvania where her M.S. and Ed.D. were We owe a great deal of thanks to Dr. Wasserman, acquired. Dr. Caporale, the class of January, 1960, would like to thank you for the many things that you have done for us. MR. SIDNEY WAGMAN DR. JOSEPHINE CAPORALE Mr. Sidney'Wagman, is the newest addition to the administrative staff. Although he has been a part of our school for the last year and a half, many of us are not acquainted with him. However, this is a good omen, as his duties involve the disciplinary department! He attended Temple University and the University of Pennsylf vania and has received his Masters Degree. Even though he has been with us a short time, he has gained the respect and admiration of the staff and students. Mr. Wagman, we hope that you will enjoy many happy and healthy years at South Philadelphia High School. Seven 2 , 1 ,. 4 L- f 'Q , . 1-1- i -dl JJ fi, 4 ' cn ,ss X ,v Zggg 1, --if Mrs. S. Our teachers impressed us with their vast knowledge and everlasting understanding of our not digging Shakespeare. Some of us tried our creative skills in the journalism class and others hamming it up in Dramatics. WStar English was offered for those of us who were amateur psychologists. How can we forget the many dreaded book tests, essays and compositions, term tests, gram' mar reviews research papers, poetry reading, and of course, Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo? Charles Dickens, Edna Eerber, Robert Frost, William Shakespeare, you will be in our hearts forever! Mr. A. Beaumont Mr. H. Becker QQ V X r EXMQSSMJ. 'Bergex-13 , Mrs. H. Candeub Mr. A. If you don't be' lieve me, ask Miss Liberty Bell fMiss Bergenl, or any one of the teachers in our school under the di' rection of Mr. Brodsky, the head of the Social Studies Department. If there were any questions in our minds concerning history, we knew where to go. All of our history teachers were up to date on their favorite subject and were overjoyed to exhibit their great store of knowlf edge. We were certainly privileged to be able to obtain such an excellent background in both American and European history here at Southern. Eleven ,Q Mr. J. Nelson Departmental Head CIE CE The Science Department of South Phila' delphia High School is one of the inest in the city. We can attribute this accomplishf ment to our wonderful science teachers and to the capable head of the department, Mr. Nelson. Biology, physics, and chemistry are the sciences offered in our school to insure our understanding of the world we live in. For those who wish to probe deeper into the wonders of nature, there is an ad' vanced science course. This course enables gifted students to indulge in those fields of science which most interest them and to develop pure scientiic reasoning. Southern certainly gives the training in the light of modern theory and keeps abreast of the latest developments in the different sciences. Mrs. V. Cohen .M Mr. A. Guisini Mrs. S. Grant Dr. M. These, our instructors, with their understanding guidance and capable teaching, have coached us towards the goal of progress for the past three years. Since variety is the spice of life, our school offers many branches of math, such as geometry, algebra, trigonometry, solid geometry, and general math. How can we forget the tense moments experienced on those Wednesday mornings! With the approaching electronic age it will be up to us, the future scientists and mathematicians of tomorrow, to meet, the needs of our world. This department has been one of the most important stepping stones to our ambitions. This sound was quite familiar to us, the members of the Keepsake Staff and to those of us around the Keepsake oflice. The personal cards, however, were not the only things that we dealt with. It was the job of the cofeditors to write a theme for our Yearbook, while the assistant eclitor's main worry was the pictures. Of course, the literary def partment and the typing department had quite a respon- sibility, also. These are the main- points, plus hours and hours of work after school, which made your Keepsake, january 1960, the book that you are now reading. All of these things could not have been accomplished without the careful supervision and experience. of our sponsor, Miss O'Neil. In forming a book such as this, there were many rough spots, but the person that was always ready to smooth them was our sponsor. Miss O'Neil has been sponsoring the Keepsake staff for four years and has listened to the woes and joys of many editors. During a brief period of our sponsor's absence, Mr. Shelow and Mr. Paravincini aided our staff. We would like to extend our thanks to these members of the faculty. The staff appreciated their help. Along with the work the editors had laid out for us there were also the many pleasant hours of sharing each other's company. fThe yelling, screaming, and itWSE3'l'? we will not mention., However, despite the ulcerfforming times the staff experienced, we managed to emerge victorious and make what we think to be a wonderful -Yearbook. We hope that you think as we do and that your Yearbook becomes a symbol of your life at Southern that you will never forget. Under the fine instruction of Mr. Joseph Pitt, these boys were able to slide in to home base with ease. Many of the team members will be graduating. This year all Southernites can look forward to seeing the speedsters running through the one hundred, and two' twenty yard dashes, the quarter mile run, and the fabulous mile relay. How these Rams do is a question to be answered in the spring. CROSS COUNTRY Mr. D. Eastburn C ouch Crossfcountry is a competitive sport. which involves a great deal of hard work and'perseverence. On the Held our team was led by Larry Simmons who was soon showing his fellow harriers, the back of his heels as he ran on to break records previously recorded in Southern. It was the Southern crossfcountry sportsmen, under the direction of Mr. Don Eastburn, who recorded a 9.7 rat' ing for sportsmanship, the highest rating ever given a team in any sport in Phila' delphia, who brought to Southern the Whitaker Trophy, an honor that this team and our student body can be ex' tremely proud of. x .3 afw, mg Mr. M. GIRLS' ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION A long established organization, the Girls' Athletic Associaf tion, meets during the course of a year to plan and discuss athletic activities for the feminine half of S.P.H.S. Each term they launch a campaign to encourage the girls to participate in some phase of their broad program, which includes volleyball, modern dance, basketball, bowling, badminton, tennis, majorettes, cheerleaders, and colorguards. Using their ingenuity, they create programs which will interest all the girls, not only the very athletic, in recreational fun and physical development. Representatives of each sport form the A. As all the ubleary eyed Seniors boarded the train, there stood our principal, Mr. Rossi, waving good-bye and wishing us an enjoyable trip. Above the snores was heard joyous singing, from the min' ute we left the station until we arrived in Washf ington. Upon arriving at 9:45 A.M., we took a hike to our buses, and were checked in, Our Hrst stop, was a quaint cottage known as the White House. We then had our picture taken. The picture turned out very nicelyg that is, if you enjoy seeing foreheads, backs, and miscelf laneous pieces of the human anatomy. Soon, we donned our mountainfclimbing outhts, and toured the Capitol. We all left, Hlled with dreams of becoming Chief Executive of the United States. Our next stop, was the Smithsonian Institute. When we arrived, we all went our separate ways, and toured the three impressive buildings dedicated to American, Medical, and Natural Sciences. Most of the girls rushed to see the famed Hope Dia' mondf' A number of the guards, stood around pick' ing up the eyeballs of the gafga girls who conf template getting a diamond of that size for their engagements Qwishful thinking girls!j Back to the buses we trotted, and we took off. We then visited the old faithfulsf' the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials. After viewing these im' pressive structures, we sped to Virginia and the Arlington National Cemetery. On arriving, we hopped off the buses and made a mad dash to get a glimpse of the changing of the guard. I think some of the kids broke the record for the mile that day. Although it is a solemn ceremony, some of the girls did some harmless flirting with the guards. I must give the guards credit, for it is very hard not to flirt back at the beautiful girls of Southern. Off we were again, this time to Mount Vernon, home of George and Martha Washington. While there, we were hoping to see them, but found out that they were indisposed. We then raced back to the station, boarded the train, and headed home. P. S. We all had a swinging time. as - n'l: A W, avr X, H .Y in , iflxilwfr 1,1 . A eff: .Qt V, ' 0.153 . I .3 ,X waz, a A. I z. ' a M .. bln OR BUT 4-. . ,la W 'f b Q .iii m 'N KN. I v. Snyder Avenue, Phila. 45, Pa JosEP1-x Rossi Principal ALEXANDER J. WILLIS Business Advisor MARGARET V. O'NE1L LhmmyAdww1 JANUARY 1960 TO THE GRADUATES OF JANUARY 1960: Through the help of our principal, Mr. Joseph Rossi, and our vice-principals, Dr. Josephine Caporale, Dr. Maurice Wasserman, and Mr. Sydney Wagman, we have come to the end of our most important term in senior high school. We wish to thank these dedicated people for helping us reach successfully the last act of our high school drama. In the preparation of this book we are most grateful to Mr. George Paravicini and Mr. Cyrus Shelow, who took time from their duties to assist us in the absence of our sponsor, Miss Margaret O'Neil. We appreciate the splendid cooperation extended to us by our good friends - Mr. James Clark, printer, Mr. Al Bellino and Mr. Milt Techner, photographers of Zamsky Studios. Without the help of three underclassmen, John Aiello, talented artist, Harlan Coopersmith, and Joel Lieson with photo- graphy and literary ability, this edition of the NKEEPSAKEN would not be as fine as we hope it is. Moreover, we are indebted to those devoted members of the WKEEPSAKEW staff who labored tirelessly to produce a fine book. Finally, we have reserved a special heartfelt thank-you for Miss Margaret O'Neil, who guided our literary efforts, and for Mr. Alexander Willis, who so capably handled the financial burden of publishing this edition of the NKEEPSAKEH. With deep appreciation of the efforts of all these people, we present your NKEEPSAKEN to you, the ninth graduating class of South Philadelphia High School. We hope you like it.
