CAME C0 QUERED C0 CLUDED' by leon Rudolph February l94l IOA By a dazzllng resplendent galaxy of fool1sh young men who knew not what they drd Southron Hlgh 1S besxeged-a t1de of talent ready to forge to the fore SIHQGIS wrlters actors doctors a llberal spr1nkl1ng of gen1uses all const1tut1ng the February 44 A Class Nut Mom 1fS a tough f1ght the fC1St term Roster raps lunchroom scraps and It soon became too apparent to the bewrlder d but zealous Frosh that there IS a lot to learn and a lot to earn The Frank C N1eweg F1eld costlng S250 O00 the most modern and f1nest hlgh school stad1um ln the East IS f1nally completed and dedlcated on Iune 6 after unt1r1ng effort by all Each sect1on elects a senator we meet Mr Nleweg the pr1nc1pal stumble 1nto our da1ly classes and 1n state of perpetual obed1ence and wlth glassy eyes ye futoor senyors pass? the f1rst term and become a full fledged member of the Fted and Black September l94l lOB The guard1ans of the colors are now ready to graduate 1n two and one half years But 1ts a grand feel1ng of secur1ty and superrorlty that causes the chest of the half year veteran to heave w1th prlde as he gazes up on the lowly newcomers No more embarras 1ng Jaunts about supposed guards We know room SIX 1snt the general Of'f1CG and no more m1l1tar1st1c attentlon at the sound of every wh1stle Not only that but lt 1S now apparent that a pet1t1on IS not a lunchroom d1sh that every pOl1l1 mlles of walk1ng December 7 marked the laps stab 1n the back and a groupmg of all Amer1cans 1nto one b1g fam1ly February 1942 llA A long process 1S m store before the crude less pure 1ron 1S el1m1nated and the f1nal refrned product of February 44 1S pro duced But 1t hardly feels at all un1mportant or uncomfortable to Sll 1n the spaclous Southern Hlgh Audltorlum amldst the vast assemblage We felt krnda funny when Mr Frank C NIGWGQ left because we had only had the pleasure of know1ng h1m such a short t1me Mr Andrew S Hames head the Soclal Studres Dept succeeded h1m There was talk of A Class shows 'lhe war began to show w1th the leav1ng of faculty members and fellow class members September 1942 llB Am1d squawks about us bemq the f1fSl 1n last out w1th last lunch a pre 1nduct1on tra1n1ng program was scheduled to start 1n February More members of our lllustrlous February 44 Class were elected to the Mace The laps fell back on Guadalcanal Rommel broke h1s own record for a prolonged cross country run and we bought bonds llke mad Former students 1n armed servrce urged the rema1n1ng studes to f1n1sh school mostly those who had not had Mr K February 1943 l2A Hopes that classes would be d1scont1nued two months earl1er because of the fuel s1tuat1on collapsed when the school day was merely shortened We laughed at the h1gh dues the sen1ors pa1d fools that we were And then plans for the SGDIOI Class We elected V1ctor De Marco for Pres1dent Arthur ROSS1 as VlCGPI9Q1d9Hl and Russel Borgese as Secretary Treasurer and then went home for a three month vacat1on'P durmg 52 7 7 ' 1 1 I 1 I , IW l I I I I -W I I ' I V . . 9 - - 1 f' , , , L S' ' . , cian is a flatterer at election time, and that proper use of back halls saves I W I I I I I - 1, . ,, . And then those Knlghts of Knowledge make thexr ex1t thetr battle scarred sh1elds 1mpr1nted w1th feats ot ach1evement and thelr armor shmmg w1th a new llght ot knowledge And a for the last t1me as students they pass under the portals ot Southern H1gh School the pass word IS Good Knrght Epilogue In the years to come when we are men and may some day szt zn our studzes glanczng through these pages znszgnzfzcant as they are we wzll prob ably realzee that the old gray buzldzng at Broad and Jackson Streets has gwen us somethzng whzch words cannot express The days when we romped through the halls ltke wild young ducks wzll have been the happzest of all our years Sayzng good bye by way of mouth does not mean that the memory also gwes a farewell 53 sources, their only fault being that they dare tell the truth.
