Ode to Southern by l crald Weiss As I gaee upon the old decrepit frame of Southern High And the trzumph of graduation day grown nzgh The years in retrospect go rolling by Thru the panoramic view of the mznds eye The first scene that comes to me a lad laden down wzth books Hts hair slzcked back his t1e just rzght a freshman by his looks Listening close to the teachers set up He copies notes without a let up fMy what a pal was hell He looks at his roster his next stop zs gym He can t read the numbers so he asks hrs rzend Slim Slzm a senzor and wise to the trzcks Smiles slyly at him and sends hzm to six The term passes slowly with zts home work and tests And he eats all his lunches zn the Generals class best The General knows Spanish and teaches ' it too I know hzs name and I guess you do too At last the term ends he passes with s The next should be easier he fervently prays, The new term begins and his roster is made looks it all over but cant find hrs grade cant find gym or his Spanzsh French decides to correct this and moves from hzs bench asks his advisor who says to the lad Such a queer lookzng roster I never have had Hes sent to committee and there he will find Why they look at his roster they turn dea dumb and blind At last he corrects tt to suzt his own taste The term rs half over what wonderful waste' The next thing to happen to our dopey young loon Was to be caught zn the hallway uhzst ling a tune A tap on the shoulder a slip fo deten tion The language he used then we cannot mention went after school and sat 'without cheer Hts name was called late and he forgot o say Here Two more detentzons for this little mis take Cheer up young man just an unlucky break The term passes quzckly promotion grows near He s getting thinner from worry and fear Hes bad zn Gym and his English is poor Hes uorrzed bout Spanish and French even more gets hzs report and takes a quzck glance red marks appear so he raves and he rants The summer vacation zt came and it went School came again but brought no con tent if ' ,..
