SOUTHERN 1954 by Robert lnllzs lt IS the year l953 The world IS at peace ancl everyone now leads a pleasant and peaceful existence People have finally wised up and we now have a three day working week However schools are still in session five days a week Since this is one of our off days let us drop in at our old alma mater and see how things are getting along As we approach Broad and Iackson Streets we see a magnificent 9d1f1CG with all glass br1cks However we see no doors and 1t IS qulte a while before we notice a sign which tells us to push the third brick from the bot tom 1n order to enter the bu1ld1ng Upon touching the brick the whole centei section of the building sl1des aside and we enter As we cross the threshold the door slides back due to a photo electric cell arrangement We follow a r d arrow marked principles office Since 1t IS only ten oclock and school starts at eleven we find all the faculty gathered 1n the principals office l1sten1ng to a pep talk When we look at their faces we bhnk and pmch ourselves to see if we re still ahve For lo and behold they all look much younger than they did in 1943 and Dr Blancke 1S the youngest looking of the lot We learn later that this is due pr1mar1ly to Dr Blanckes youth pills Yes those p1lls which were the butt of many a Joke were really youth p1lls Now the munching of pills 1S a common slght 1n South ern Now let us see how our favorite teachers are getting along Mr Klme IS still trying to pound the s1nes COSIHGS and tangents into the thick skulls of his pupils He has made a reservation IH a sanator1um for he expects to have a nervous break down any day now only ten minutes to go Keep your distance of forty inches However he came near being mobbed by the class when he demanded that they climb the ropes three times after spending most of the period doing squat Jumps Mr Carey has a special arrangement with the principal whereby there IS always a fire dr1ll when he is QIVIHQ a chemistry test Mr Richards has had records made of his chemistry lectures so that he may catch up on his sleep during recitation per1ods Dr McDonough has finally come to realize that his students are not Emsteins and that he must go slower and explain things more thoroughly Mr Kimmelman has in his room an extensive wardrobe so that he may look the part he 1S acting Also h has finally wised up and IS now selling his corn to Fred Allen When taking charge of the detention class he dresses in the garb of Hecate and Mr Kimmelman as Hecate IS enough to frighten a l1on Mr Parav1c1n1 is still lull1ng his 8A English class into a false sense of secunty by tell1ng them how flexible their course 1S Poor souls WU1t t1ll he tells them about the term paper Mr Farbish has installed microphones on his pupils desks so that he may hear them recite Mr Cades has a contract with every magazine publisher whereby they send him all magazines which contains articles on South America that they publish Pup1ls who have Mr P1tts for Gym and have Latin Amertcan Soci iology 1mmed1ately afterwards to quote one of the students It IS the most restful period of the day Even with its modern conveniences we still love to think of Southern as that old run down firetrap of the early forties 9 U 1 ' I I - , 1 ' I ' I I Mr. Pitts is still up to his old tricks.
