OYIZOIIS When you stand by the seashore and l k out over the waves you discern in the dim distance a place where the sky seems to meet the water the Horizon In ages past countless numb rs of people have thus stood and gazed far out to sea straining eye and imagination in their attempts to fathom what lay beyond the horizon T m st people it was a thing of mystery and danger a something to be avoid d To others it was a chal lenge to be accepted an obstacle to be overcome or an ideal to be attained And so these men of th past girded their loins and resolutely set their course far beyond the kn wn horizon and like Coldmbus gained a world and gave that world Its grandest lesson: On! sail on! Not only in the realm of exploration but also in other fields were there horizon-seekers. ln medicine electricity transportation social reform religi- ons etc. there were the few who braved th unknown dangers and over- came the prejudices and bigotry of the day to seek out new worlds and to make the lot of mankind infinitely better because of their sacrifice and devo- tion to duty. Where there is no vision the people perish. The horizon-seekers of our early history -men like Washington Iefierson Franklin -had the vision and stamina to fling aside the bonds of conventiong to look far into the future: 4 4---. ' and to recogn1ze the fact that the hor1zon 15 not a bound but a challenge There were t1mes when clouds all but obscured the honzon others when 1t seemed bnght We of the graduat1on class look 1nto the future The hor1zon 1S dark' We l1ve 1n a world blacked out by the gr1m horrors of global confl1ct Our l1ves are so encompassed by the maelstrom of greed self1shness and lust that the future 1S all but 1nd1st1ngu1shable There was a t1me when the graduates of a h1gh schoo1 could make def1n1te plans about the future and proceed to put these plans 1nto effect Wllh a reasonable expectat1on of hav 1ng the1r amb1t1ons real1zed Under pr sent cond1t1ons however we would be w1shful th1nkers 1f we proceed d to lay def1n1te plans concern1ng our futures lf we do not w1n th1s war and the peace that follows ne1ther we nor our poster1ty w1ll be QIVQH the chance to plan any k1nd of future The needs of our f1ght1ng forc s take precedence over any self1sh thoughts And yet there seems to be a fl1cker of l1ght on the hortzon The problems of war are always followed by the problems of peace If lh1S fl1cker of llght on the honzon IS to broaden 1nto a strong beam sh1n1ng on a free world the conolus1on of th1s peoples war must produc a peoples peace At the t1me of th1s wr1t1ng th f1fSl concrete step toward a postwar coal1t1on of nat1ons has been made A conference of the four m1gl'1t1est nat1ons took place and 1t was dec1ded that the common enemy must be dealt w1th by all the Un1t d Nat1ons s1multaneously How d1fferent th1s IS from the last war when only one man env1s1oned a world organ1zat1on as a collectlve securtty for a lastmg peace lf th1s IS to be our one world th1s peopl s p ace must 1nclude a concerted act1on by all nat1ons thereby fac1l1tat1ng free soo1al pol1t1cal and econom1c IHTQICOUISQ among nat1ons Mankmd has too long be n em ploy1ng war as the panacea for econom1c antagon1s1ms Another war may prove so destruot1ve that the fall of c1v1l1zat1on may well be the pr1ce of our 1ndulgence We have 1t IH our power to make 1h1s the f1nal war of any na non We are young but we look ahead resolutely We must be equal to the task so that our future w1ll not be d1seased w1th war The honzon of a last1ng peace lo Just barely d1scern1ble but 1t IS clear enough for us to move toward Then let us look1ng 1nto ever broaden1ng honzons plunge 1nto the peace Wllh all our v1s1on and energy There w1ll be need for p1oneers 1n many f1elds some of whtch may be completely revolut1on1zed by DIOQISSSIVG fores1ght ln rad1o electron1cs transportat1on and refr1gerat1on problems Wlll ar1se and be overcome soo1al problems w1ll need clear tl'11nkers The sky s the llmll as far as accompl1shment concerns us 1n the post war world Let h1story kn.ow us all of us together as the generat1on that beat l-l1tler and the AXIS destroyed fasc1sm and made a l'1app1er world for the youth of every land and age w1th ever br1ghten1ng horlzons 5 1 1 1 1 . 1 1 . ct . O . . t C 1 1 1 I 1 SOUTHERN 1954 by Robert lnllzs lt IS the year l953 The world IS at peace ancl everyone now leads a pleasant and peaceful existence People have finally wised up and we now have a three day working week However schools are still in session five days a week Since this is one of our off days let us drop in at our old alma mater and see how things are getting along As we approach Broad and Iackson Streets we see a magnificent 9d1f1CG with all glass br1cks However we see no doors and 1t IS qulte a while before we notice a sign which tells us to push the third brick from the bot tom 1n order to enter the bu1ld1ng Upon touching the brick the whole centei section of the building sl1des aside and we enter As we cross the threshold the door slides back due to a photo electric cell arrangement We follow a r d arrow marked principles office Since 1t IS only ten oclock and school starts at eleven we find all the faculty gathered 1n the principals office l1sten1ng to a pep talk When we look at their faces we bhnk and pmch ourselves to see if we re still ahve For lo and behold they all look much younger than they did in 1943 and Dr Blancke 1S the youngest looking of the lot We learn later that this is due pr1mar1ly to Dr Blanckes youth pills Yes those p1lls which were the butt of many a Joke were really youth p1lls Now the munching of pills 1S a common slght 1n South ern Now let us see how our favorite teachers are getting along Mr Klme IS still trying to pound the s1nes COSIHGS and tangents into the thick skulls of his pupils He has made a reservation IH a sanator1um for he expects to have a nervous break down any day now only ten minutes to go Keep your distance of forty inches However he came near being mobbed by the class when he demanded that they climb the ropes three times after spending most of the period doing squat Jumps Mr Carey has a special arrangement with the principal whereby there IS always a fire dr1ll when he is QIVIHQ a chemistry test Mr Richards has had records made of his chemistry lectures so that he may catch up on his sleep during recitation per1ods Dr McDonough has finally come to realize that his students are not Emsteins and that he must go slower and explain things more thoroughly Mr Kimmelman has in his room an extensive wardrobe so that he may look the part he 1S acting Also h has finally wised up and IS now selling his corn to Fred Allen When taking charge of the detention class he dresses in the garb of Hecate and Mr Kimmelman as Hecate IS enough to frighten a l1on Mr Parav1c1n1 is still lull1ng his 8A English class into a false sense of secunty by tell1ng them how flexible their course 1S Poor souls WU1t t1ll he tells them about the term paper Mr Farbish has installed microphones on his pupils desks so that he may hear them recite Mr Cades has a contract with every magazine publisher whereby they send him all magazines which contains articles on South America that they publish Pup1ls who have Mr P1tts for Gym and have Latin Amertcan Soci iology 1mmed1ately afterwards to quote one of the students It IS the most restful period of the day Even with its modern conveniences we still love to think of Southern as that old run down firetrap of the early forties 9 U 1 ' I I - , 1 ' I ' I I Mr. Pitts is still up to his old tricks. With all but one of the starting tearn retained, and the remaining mem- bers of the team well drilled in this art, the team is well on its way toward its eighth title. With these experienced foilman as Marshioni, Titomer, Levin and Tomar, Southern is surely well representated in the league. Fencing is said to be the fundamental prerequisite of bayonet drill, box- ing, and wrestling. The position of the feet in fencing gives the balance so necessary in these activities.
