LE F I THE STIIIIM A llatlner Tired Staff Presents lts Efforts E have tried through stirring. history-making months to give our yearbook a real excuse for being. In timcs when thc efforts of all must be turned to blotting out the tyranny threatening the destruction of civilization, we hope we can justify the time spent on these records. Back in those antunm days when the June, 1-3 Spccto was still in the dream stage. a few of us got together to toss around ideas. They were the days when the British were being pushed back by that crafty desert fox . . . Brazil declared war on the Axis . . . and two great Allied leaders met in mid-ocean to draw up the Atlantic Charter. making the l our Freedoms for all peoples the ultimate goal of the United Nations. History was being made. and through the fierce debates we had, one thing was certain, this yearbook was going to be more than a record of student life: it must be representative also of the present era. Vvhile we elected officers and struggled to systematize the Senior personalities, American troops were landing under cover of the darkness to begin the invasion of North Africa . . . an amazing Russian army was rolling thc Nazis hack from the Volga and the rich oil fields of the Caucasus .... December seventh! We paused to think hack on a year of war, took inventory of what we as a. school, and as individuals had done . . . and resolved to double it. Vve gathered pictures of our girls helping in hospitals, settlement houses. at lied Cross headquarters. and swelled with pride that Southern with a background of tradition in service was headed for an even greater future. All over the world men were fighting. Horrible-wonderful things were hap- pening! ive on the staff were trying to find out our school's place in the scheme of things. realizing that our destinies were tied up with the far flung battle line. and that the dcstinies of future generations would depend on the part we played in winning the war . . . and the peace. In March. as we noted the tenth anniversary of IIitler's rise to power. we seriously contemplated our shrinking world. That a madman thousands of miles away could cast his ominous shadow over a little yearbook in Philadelphia made us realize more poignantly than ever that Isolation is a concept of thc very dead past! All other news was pushed off the front page as the press told an amazed and awed public the dramatic story of the Casablanca Conference. Anthony Eden came in April to confer with the President, and the whole allied world teemcd with post-war plans. Yearbook dummy under arm. we attended con- ferences and debates. a little overwhelmed at the great task lying before us . . . fearing, hoping, believing .... lVe know this Spccto is but a leaf in the storm, insignificant among the pro- found writings interpreting this cataclysmic period of historyg but for us it is important in that it has helped us to see our way through to our place as citizens of thc world we must make. And we close our yearbook with a fervent prayer that the phrase The New Vl'orld's Promise will never be littered with irony, bitterness, or disillusionmentl 3 'is Sflf-ll-Plflll' 0'
