FIRO TIICISE WHO SE Here in Egypt the ancient civilization minglcs not incongruously with the modern. VVomen folk with faces veiled--men garbed in flowing robes- paticnt. sad-eyed donkeys bearing heavy burdens -and over it all the mystery of the Eastg yet we meet for recreation in the most modern of French buildings. and our fighting equipment is a twenti- eth century miracle . . . the goal of common hu- manity binds all together . . . and East and West clasp hands .... ALLEN- -ie -x- ax- -me -xc- lt is ten o'cleck Christmas Eve here. and very quiet and peaceful. The sand is glistening white under a huge yellow moon. and there isn't a cloud for a planej in the sky. There is an ache in the beauty of the night .... ARNOLD. 'lt 'X' -lr -X- -X- Here two months and I haven't kissed the Blar- ney Stone yet, but leave it to the Yanks to find a better substitute! A little bit of heaven-Ireland -and the angels are red-headed colleens .... ! Jos. 'I' 'K' 'X' 'll' 'X' Today is Thanksgiving. I was just trying to sum up in my mind just what I had to be thankful for. The first and most important reason is that I am one of the lucky people in this world. It is wonderful to be an American! I am thankful to be able to fight for the right of man to be a man! Thankful for the love and understanding you both have given me-for all the fun the boy I used to be had-and oh, yes, I'm thankful I have the afternoon off .... EDDIE. -K- -lf' -X' 'K' 'X' . . . Your VVAACy daughter's having the time of her life. Uncle Sam feeds me and then works it right off again .... LENA. -if -X' 'li' -lt -K- Today I got a most pleasant surprise when I was given a pullover by our quartermaster, sent by The British VVar Relief Society of the U. S. A. To feel your friendliness way over here in Malta means so much .... CLYDE. -It 'I' 'X' -K' 'X- This is a scene out of the Bible-shepherds knitting as they follow their flocks. From where I am sitting we can see the camels grazing and between times one would never realize that human lives are expendable. The sun is shining on burn- ing white sand. I shall be ever grateful to Uncle Sam for this trip .... EVA. Funny. how you think of simple things . . . the red cloth on the kitchen table. and the shining black coal stove where we used to pop corn. Glad the store's paying, llad! I'll be back with you soon . . . when my job's done here. . . . Nick. 'li' 41- -X' -li' -X- Xo, this isnit a normal world. but it's never been normal for our generation. Maybe because we had such a tough timc ourselves. we're willing to risk plenty out here so that our kids will have a decent time .... Then you did like the ring . . . sorry I couldn't put it on your finger. but I'll be back to slip on that wedding band. and then we'll live happily ever after in the normal world wc're making now. .IJAVI-1. lk Pk Ik Sk Pk Last week we were issued twenty-four rounds of live ammunition and assigned to different areas along the . . . railroad. All in all our division guarded thirty-two miles. Our orders were to shoot anyone acting the slightest bit odd .... It was quite a thrill to be told when we got back that the President of the United States had passed over that stretch of railroad. IIAN. -It 'X' -If -X' -lf- They were an awe-inspiring sight. An endless line of men, dark green helmets. dully gleaming in the sun, brightly polished guns slung over their shoulders, eight hundred feet striking the ground at the same instant. ComN. -X' -I6 -If 'X' -X- Sure, your letters are interesting-keep writing. This news about the quick change of your school curriculum to meet the war needs thrilled all the gang I read it to. That's the stuff-typically American. It makes me more certain than ever that we'll know what to do with the peace . . . this time! Jnvi. 'X' 'N' -It -X' 'K' Learning how to make and keep friends is never easier than in the service where the boys have left wives and children, fathers and mothers, to come to a place where without friends vou'd go crazv. r a . ' y . ' I'here s a kind of closeness you get that s different than anything I've ever known. You wait till you meet Tony . . . there's a buddy. . . .! K1-:l'ru. 2 wcuIy -Iwo
