Loss of jerry Faris, favorite fellow of all those who knew him, came as a hard blow to faculty and friends. Out of our hands, he slipped away, into the hands of God. The daylight brought him to usg before nightfall he was gone. jerry was a little guy with a kind word for everyone-a boy with a won- derful laugh that all will remember. No troubles could ever trap him. His personality, friendliness and loyalty guided those of us who were fortunate enough to know him. Even though jerry has been taken from us, his many characteristics al- ways will remain. Somewhere, some- how. he is making others happy, just as he did those he left behind. Greenies were saddened by his passing but the many memories of jerry will remain in the hearts of all South Parkers. M ,WWW 1 . . This win for the Greenies set up the stage for the district 6-AAA showdown with the Port Neches Indians. Five backs accounted for the seven Greenie touchdowns as the South Park pigskin machine rolled on undefeated through nine season games. Three new season marks were made in this game. It was the highest point total for a single game by South Park, French scored more points then the combined total scored by all of South Park's eight other opponentsg South Park scored more than any team had scored on French before. Although the Greenies were jubilant over the victory, the celebration was dampened by a near-loss of the services of number one quarterback Charles Starcke. The Indians scored the final touchdown in the last seconds of the third quarter to make it 19-13. The Greenies fought their way to the Indian 17 late in the fourth quarterg but the gun sounded with the score still 19-13, blasting the Parkers' title hopes and sending the Tribesmen on their way to a state championship. S. Halpin and Bill McNeill were the top ground gainers for South Park. McNeill contributed 79 while Halpin chipped in with 39. Charles Starcke, who played despite a sprained wrist he suffered in the French game, tossed for both the Greenie touchdowns. Four Greenies scored in double digits as South Park entered a first place tie with French. Bill McNeill and S. j. Halpin scored 15 points each while Larry Shaver and Danny Cloy chipped in with 10 each. After their fast start, the Greenies were slowed down by the French Buffs 18-55. This win put the Buffs one win away from the East Zone title. A week later the Greenies set the stage for the title show-down by defeating Port Neches 60-54. Shaver paced South Park with 19 points to clear the scene for the battle with French. Then the tiny Greenies pulled the biggest upset of the season. Highly-favored French fell before the attack of the desperate Parkers 65-52. This win forced the taller, more ex- perienced Buffs into a sudden-death play-off for the East Zone title. The first game in the two-out-of-three series was played at Beaumont High gym before the largest crowd of the season. The Greenies, hampered by the loss of Coach Tipton, who had the flu, and Bill McNeill, who also was ill, were edged 49-45 by the Buffs. B squad Coach, Roy Davidson, took over the coaching assignment and did well. The deciding game of the series was Lplayed at MacArthur gym. 'QM -:af n -,af 1 First place in district, second place in regional, and an entry in the state meet were among the outstanding accomplishments of the Greenie golfers this year. Alvin Odom, senior, led the way for the Greenies in both district and regional meets as medalist, and was South Park's lone entry in the state meet in Austin. An over-all season record of ten victories, four losses, and one tie in dual and triangular meets was the contri- bution of the Parker linksmen to the 1956 sports scene. In major tournaments, the Greenies gained four first places, two seconds, one third and two fourth places. A place was won in each tournament which the Greenies entered. In addition to playing in district games and tourna- ments, the hard working Greenie golfers also put on the annual South Park Invitational Golf Tournament, one of the largest in the state. ,- r-,-fi .. . Successful Tournaments H i gbli gbt S ports Scene Invitational tournaments, one old and one new, were two bright events on the sports scene for South Park this year. The old tournament, the fifth annual South Park Invitational Golf Tournament, set three new records. Lamar of Houston and the Greenie team both sliced strokes off the previous team score record established by Lamar in 1952. This year's 139 entries topped the previous record of 133. The third new record set was the number of participating schools. Twenty- five schools, eighteen high schools and seven junior highs, were represented. South Park's first Invitation Tennis Tournament was a great success. Singles winners were Betty Faust of Houston and Terry Todd of Austin. Doubles winners were Mary Small and Frances Scott of Shreveport and Raymond Flummerfelt and Frank Bolton of South Park. Student Council We tip our hats to one of the largest organ- izations in S.P.H.'S .... the Student Council. Selling school stationery, sponsoring socials after football games, acting as host to the Good Sportsmanship League are a few of its many duties. The Student Council also sponsored Frontier Day and Twirp Week, distributed football stickers to students, and last but not least bought a jukebox for the school. Plus boosting school spirit, this organization serves as a link between the students and faculty. Accent on Science Centered in the middle of the world's largest petro-chemical area, South Park students are interested in science, and numerous science courses are offered to foster that interest in this increasingly complex world. The general aim of biology is to acquaint students with the plant and animal worlds and to teach them something of the interrelation and interdependence of all living things. Chemistry, the study of the change of matter, may help students better under- stand what these chemical industries of this area are composed of. Physics deals with the physical properties of matter. As a science, its aim is to make clearer the principles and applications of mechanics, heat, light, sound, and other fundamental particles of matter. l A R 1 QS ,l ya c f 1 pa 1 QQ 'lj Llq wax? i 4 'U fi r Yr ' N I 'N V 'Nl K 8 ' 'A nl A X x HOW VUONDERFULY - Miss Eppie Quick- sall admires Miss Kate Z a C h a ry ' s newly-are quired engagement ring. ' 5 Learning to Live Not so very long'ago, people thought of home economics as homemaking, sewing and cooking. To- - day, though, modern homemaking courses like those in Greenieland are much more than that. Feeding and clothing the family, getting along with family and friends, caring for children and the sick, and ' I I . improving the home . . . all these are covered in the ' three years of homemaking at South Park. Housed in our unique Home Economics Cottage, homemaking classes this year were operated under a vocational plan which reimburses the school from the state. The teachers have the privilege of making visits to the home, in order to learn more about the students' needs. Students can take summer courses and earn half a credit toward graduation.
