P' During the past tew years, South Park has added several new courses to its vocational department. These include: an elementary course in civil engi- neering, taught by Mr. I. T. McCoy, dental assistant training in the student health department Cpictured aboveig and driver's training taught by Mr. McCoy and Mr. H. D. Peavey, Teaching chiefly the fundamentals ot surveying, the civil engineering course was taken by only seven boys this year. ln the future, however, it is hoped that many more students will become inter- ested in this course. Q ln the dental assistant course the girls have actual experience as dental assistants in the office ot the school's dentist. This course not only gives the girls many interesting experiences, but also provides them with a promising career. To train sate drivers for the community and the nation is the purpose ot the driver's training course. The students enjoy improving their driving tech- niaue in the l947 Dodge and l947 Chevrolet owned by the department. SUMMARY OF THE 1947 TRACK TEAM The track season mainly served to re-establish track as a major sport in South Park. The re-building program proved to be successful, and by the end ot the season the Greenies had several outstanding competitors. For the first time, a Winter track program was started in December of l946 for the purpose of teaching the boys the basic rudiments of the sport. The Greenies entered the eight meets during the course of the season. Meets included the Conroe Relays, Goose Creek Relays, the Purple Relays, a dual meet with St. lames and the District Regional State Meet. The highlight ot the season proved to be the dual meet with St. Iames ot Pt. Arthur. The Greenies took this meet by scoring 77 points to 57 for St. Iames. The significant thing about this particular meet was that it was the first track meet ot any kind Won by a Greenie team in nine years. Billy Baggett, by placing in the Broad lump in 6 meets, Iody Runnels who placed in the Pole Vault in 7 meets and Sam Wallace, a Freshman miler, proved to be the team's outstanding members. Over sixty boys participated in the enlarged track program. The track lettermen included: Iody Runnels, Billy Bag- gett, Sam Wallace, Charles Saxe, Lee Fulbright, Regi- nald Deem, Richard Robinson, and Bill Lovett. .gf , ,D 1947 TRACK SEASON A zgf ' ,fn f ' I ,lg Aw wg' 4 f E N3 0 .LA V ' L hy.
