Every one officially connected with the adminis- tration of South Park High School will be wish- ing you success in your plans for the future. May I personally say to you that the best is none too good for you. Sincerely yours, C. W. BINGMAN, Superintendent .aa Q .N Adi. -.:4.aiii..a..m.,-, umnunu fgreetinga To the Class of 1940: For one to set up worthy goals is commendableg to achieve these is noteworthy. With graduation, you have made for yourself a place among the upper ten per cent of the boys and girls of America. You, as a class, have a distinctive honor in ath- letics. Few seniors of any high school are privileged to say, My school during my senior year beat Beau- mont High, won the Football and Basketball District Championships, and the City League championship in Baseball. 'W' You have been most co-operativeg you have won a place in our hearts. My sincere wish is that each of you will meet your problems in the future with the same determination to succeed which you as a class have evidenced this year. Sincerely, Z. A. Early in the season, Coaches Hodgkiss and Hutchison recognized that the football. talent was excep- tionally good. This recognition demanded their best efforts-and, be it said to their credit-these two men put forth their best efforts. Two speedy backs, supported by good blocking backs, plus a line-breaking for- ward wall were evident from the outset. The first game was with the St. Anthony Bulldogs and this game proved to be a pushover for the Greenies. The next game, far from being a pushover, was with Huntsville, and this was a close call. Per- haps somc of the over confidence exhibited in the Bulldog game was present in the Huntsville game. This was the turning point. F1'om the Huntsville game on, there was not the slightest degree of cockiness. In- stead, there was a deadly seriousness as exhibited by the decisive victories over French, Galveston, Goose Creek, Port Arthur, and Orange high schools. The traditional game, that with Beaumont High Royal Purples, had always left a bad taste in the mouths of the folks on the south side of the railroad tracks. The G-reenies determined that this year there should be no such taste-that is, in the Greenies' mouths. That determination was more than carried out, as a casual glance at the outcome will reveal. The Purple couldn't even score! Livingston, a new comer, defeated the Greenies, thereby tying for first place in the District. A Dis- trict Committee vote gave the Parkers the victory, automatically giving South Park its first District Cham- pionship. In a play-off between Stephen F. Austin school of Houston and the Greenies, the ,former won, elim- inating the Parkers from further participation in the state race. This Houston game ended the season for 1939-without doubt, the finest i11 the history of the Green and White. For the first time in 13 years, South Park defeated Port Arthur and for the first time in his- tory we defeated Beaumont High. ashcihall The Greenie Basketeers with but one returning letterman from the 1939 City Championship team start- ed the season looking woefully weak both on offense and defense. Through the regular season and during the City League schedule the boys were able to win only three games, however their spirit and hustle in' practice and in the games resulted in a steady improvement. When the favorites were picked for the District Cham- pionship, South Park was not given even an outside chance to win. However, soon after the District Tourna- ment had started it became evident that there might be some startling upsets. First the Greenies defeated Vidor by a wide marging a mild up et in' itself. Next they defeated French by ten points, a team that twice earlier in the season had beaten South Park. The victory over French placed the Greenies in the finals with a fine Buna team, and even though the Greenies had played good basketball in the two previous games they were still given little chance by the experts to beat Buna. The game gave promise of fulfilling the expert predictions for the three quarters with Buna leading by twelve points at the end of that period, but it was in the fourth stanza that the remarkable physical stamina and a burning desire to win became clearly evident in the Greenies' play. Trailing by twelve points but still unbeaten they literally turned on the heat. Showing by their play that a team that will not be beaten, can 't be beat. They emerged victorious 41-39, a most surprising upset, and probably no one was more surprised than the Greenies and their coach . Winning the championship was a great example of what hard, faithful work plus an outstanding team spirit can' ac- complish, and truly shows that G-reenie fight never dies. Utech As usual, predictions were made as to the possible outcome of the District Track Meet. And, as usual, the strength of the Greenie team was far underrated. In fact, the Greenies were supposed to make but one point, and that, a fourth place in the mile run. However, the ten boys entered from South Park accounted for seventeen and one third points which were enough to put the Greenies in third place, barely beating out Port Neches, who had seventeen points. South Park placed in the following events: Bubba Ray, first in the '100 and 220 yard dashes: Bob Hayes, second in the mile rung Bud Freeman,.third in the 880 yard rung David Purdon, fourth in the 440 yard dash, Raymond McNeel'tied for fourth, in the pole vault, and the mile relay team consisting of David Purdon, Bud Freeman, B'ill Richie and Ralyn Parkhill placed fourth in that event, Thus for the third time in a Single year a Greenie team upheld the tradition of being far superior to all expectations. 51112155 rnplqerg The following articles have appeared in nation-wide newspapers of 1950.
