THEME Technology Technological Advancement of todays society. Ever since man appeared on earth, he has had to work to obtain food, clothing. and shelter. He has also had to work to satisfy his desire for lei- sure and comfort. Through the ages, man invented thousands of tools, machines, materials, and techniques to make his work easi- er. Man also discovered electricity and other sources oflpower that increased the rate at which he could work and perform his daily duties. Thus, Technology involves man's use of tools, ma- chines, materials, techniques, and sources of power to make his work and life easier and more productive. Technology has much to do with the way we live our life. We live in an age where much of our world is controlled by comput- ers and electronical devices made possible by technological ad- vancements in science. Seldom do people think of all the many electronic comforts in their own home. We take most of these, like television, radio, the telephone and stereo equipement, for granted. Electronic thermostats control the temperature in some homes, and photoelectric cells open garage doors when a car en- ters the driveway. Furthermore, most games children play With are electronically operated. Even mothers cook food in microwave ovens through the use of electronics. Computers also play an important role in today's world. Con- temporary computers can perform one million calculations a sec- ond. These computers have miniature electronic circuits that re-- duce their'size greatly and increase theirdependability. Computers are increasingly more to 'give immediate answers to questions. People can recieve certain kinds 0 information by typing a ques- tion or some form of data into computers and recieve their infor- mation on a small television screen or a typed out data sheet. Many small businesses and large corporations use computers to speed up the companies efficency and to answer difficult prob- lems faced in productivity. Thus, as one can readily see, computers and electronics are making the world in which we live in more leisurely and comfort- able for everyone. The machine can still be a friend and not the master of man, after all.
