Connors: This illustrious name echoes in the South Park Hall of Fame as one not forgotten among teachers and students. Being a high school principal is not an easy task yet he accepted and conducted the posi- tion with intelligence, patience, and a respect for those about him. Trials and tribulations opposed Mr. Connors as he embarked upon a campaign to in- crease school spirit and encourage the necessity of education in a progressing world. Mondays, complaints, and de- taining meetings could not dampen the sincere spirit this man felt for a school-his school, one where his ex- ample and influence is still sensed. Someday we'll look back and recall the man, a friend and forming leading principal and be thankful for a light in the darkness -Thank you Mr. Con- nors! x 'ini- In-f ,Q Cc A' i 1 1 3 7 'Y WMCQW. Play mak- ings by Terry Barrett, execution of the plays by Herman Silmon and Forman McBride, and the forceful defense of Len luliano and Dave la- worski often produced confusion in the oppo- sition's minds. A contest was held amoung the students, and Bits 'N' Pieces became the news paper for the school. Not only was the title different, but so was the format. The paper became a true student venture, with staff members not only writing the articles, but printing the paper bi-weekly as well. Mr. Dulski, Faculty Advisor to the newspaper, and all Bits 'N' Pieces staff members hope that a new tra- dition has found itself at South Park in the establishment of a student newspaper. BAND AND ORCHESTRA Please stand for the Alma Mater, listen to the soloists, the Christmas Assembly, and the band plays on. This year South, Park musical mastermind Mr. Pieczynski Uvlr. The talent of these versatile musicians is obvious and South Park has the largest representation in the Buffalo All High Band as well as Erie County Band ever. Band Spirit is high and so is the spirit of the rest of South Park. We were to come from Southside, Genesee-Humboldt and the Annex, The corridors seemed high and dark and forbid- ding. What was to lie ahead? We were not quite yet true Sparks , but we were now on our way. Our first year saw us enter a new decade, we passed from the turbulance of the Sixties to the uncertainty of the Seventies. Articles in The Spark that year favored Karen Toporczyk assenting that sex education should be taught in public schools. Bernadette Sliwinski felt students should vote at the age of eighteen. Our leaders were Wayne Marshall as President with Ted Barczak as Treasurer and Nancy Bojak as Secretary. The burning question of the day was Should boys be allowed to go tieless, and the girls to wear slacks? We enjoyed the Sweetheart Dance with Music by The Road in February. Now our own Harold Stelter and Steve lones joined the orchestra. Barb Schulze and Bernie Kankiewicz attained high distinction during honor roll assemblies while other students trudged through the snow to attend Dramatics Club meetings from the Annex. Dave Ambellan started a long athletic career with cross-country, as did Greg Grzedzicki in swimming. Michael Kurec joined Tennis also. We celebrated our first Earth Day by spring cleaning in Taylor Park. Yes, we were moving as a group now, having reached the end of a momentous step in our lives here at South Park, Sophomore Year 1970-1971 As sophomores, the wise fools, we were no longer low men on South Park's totem pole. Old jokes like l'll meet you on the fourth floor, held no humor for us now, We earnestly elected Tom Samborski our president and Marilyn Seebald secretary to lead All of us together for the first time. We were eager to get involved -Bernie Bremer and lanine Clookey joined the Dial staff, while loyce Arnold was busy soliciting ads to help pay for it's publication. On the side of entertainment, Cindy lllg and Eileen Ruff helped provide us with many pleasant moments in the band. A new organization, the Drill Team sprang up with lohnnie Mae Harris and Sabrina Dunovant among its founding members. Memories smile now fondly on such incidents as Debbie Fuszara's ex-lax brownies and the Christmas spent with Charlie Brown and the Peanuts Gang . We all joined something it seemed, Cindy Bodnar, the German Club, lane Bauer, French and Diane Mclvor, Latin. Striving to attain academic excellence, we saw students like Blaze Sekovski, Mary lane lohnson, Deb Radke and Becky Erb attending late sessions of the Scholarships Club and setting honor roll records too! Tyrone Hoskins and Pat Byrnes made the basketball team that year and our man, Terry Barrett joined the football team. By the end of the year through dissecting frogs and equal alternate interior angles we had all become the class of 1973. There was still a long way to go . . , junior Year 1971-1972 We were upper-classmen now! We knew or thought we did, what it was all about . We were busy becoming more a part of our school. It was different this year however, returning to a school split by double sessions, and threatened by the fear of riot. We saw a new change in leadership despite the continuation of annual traditions like the Christmas pageant, led by singers like Tom Binga and Dan Bonner. New faces popped up in an unusual place such as Diane Lipiak and Mary Maciejewski on the varsity swimming team. Others too distinguished themselves in sports, Henry Kmidowski and Dennis Szewczyk in Cross Country and Len luliano, Pat McCarthy and Dan Faltisco in football. Academically, loanne Galenti, Sandy Clerc, and Camille Piniewski were in- troduced into the National Honor Society. While Sue Bausch and Doris Woodward cheered us on to further victories Barb Collins and Mary Farrell represented us on the Studio Arena Action Team. That same year saw us patiently awaiting the first annual Raymond Yfensky festival in Taylor Park, and we laughed at the antics of persons like Ray Seebald and Cheryl Sanczawa in the Waywinds made up by the girls backstage, Ruth Romey and Liz Fick, All in all, we were growlng-becoming-realizing ourselves, our potentialities as South Parker and individuals. There was still much more to be . .. Senior Year 1972-1973 September we had arrived! The pace of life ran much more quickly now. We saw ourselves through to the end of a long and intolerable war, half a world away. We were more matured, more ready to face the world which awaited us under the capable leadership of president, Rick Coughlin and secretary Pam Ott. Others emerged as leaders too, Chris McCarthy, Student Council secretary and Pat Wright head of the National Honor Society joined by Ted Kreuger, Lugene Urbanski and Mark Trinca. A new school paper, Bits and Pieces featured pleasant and con- troversial articles by reporters like Debbie Putnam and lohn Rhoades. We recorded ourselves under the guidance of Terry Wright, editor-in-chief of the 1973 Dial. New changes greeted us this year, we remember the confusion of co-ed lunches and Paul Mallon producing a stuffed panda as Home Ec. was opened to boys with cooking and sewing classes. Other traditions remained, Black and Red Day featured such talent as Colleen Martin and Dave Diehl, making dramatic debuts within the theme, My mother didn't raise me to be a raisenf' or How to be flaky in a bowl with your friends. We recollected Tom Larivey as a submis- sive Santa Claus and Pat Genco as one of the elves. All was not humor however, we faced real problems in the form of Crime Control with Mike Griesbaum on the panel. Kathy Koska, and Ray Pena staffed the drug Counselling sessions, as Holly Michael worked on Project Re-design. Rose Filk and Brenda Burke con- tributed long hours of labor to the 1973 Pride We will remem- ber with a smile the Great Ice Capades Caper starring Dominick Spadaro. We waited impatiently for our prom, May 25th and dreaded what followed, the ultimate final exams. Graduation! And then suddenly the halls had grown lower, smaller, no longer so awesome and bewildering, no longer so dim, They hold instead, a brighter blazing of light, the torch of education and our preparation for the future-and echo back into the years with the strains of Dear Old South Park, light of my days.. SENECA, Her- cules Furens We the seniors of South Park can now look back at the time we have spent in high school. Much work have we and our educators put into these years but our harvest has been great, the lessons we've learned are many, and the friends are irreplaceable. Of all, l think we have dis- covered that we must move on, Rick Coughling President armed with our knowledge and guided by our convictions into the world that awaits us. It's true that high school is sel- dom easy but to me these four years have been the best l've lived yet, and truly unforgetable.
