Foreword I mark the hours that shine. Throughout the scholastic year 1958-1959, there have been many bright moments for South Park. Our school received city-wide attention and respect for its standard of dress, for the excellence of attendance at its football games and the precision of its band and drill units at these games, for the marked increase in its school attend- ance and the scholastic pride that increase displays, for the high degree of spirit and co-operation among its students, for the aura of success that surrounded all of its endeavors. We, its students, are fully responsible for the attention and respect given to our school and should pride ourselves thereupon. One of the purposes of The Dialu is to record for us these intra- and extra- school activities and to give us some insight into the question of how an eventful year, such as this, could ever have come to be. Our yearbook will recall to mind one year, ten years, and even thirty years hence the shining hours we spent at dear old South Parki' and will serve as a source of pride and pleasure on the day when, after a long life of earning a living and raising a family, we can sit back, relax, and bring back long forgotten memories of youth by paging through '6The Dial - l959. Truly, The Dial should be cherished by everyone. But the shining hours we spent at South Park should be cherished most of all. Our high school days will do much to shape our future lives, especially in the choice of a career. The way we have spent our time at South Park, the courses and activities we have pursued, will help make up our minds for us on many questions, such as a choice of college, the chances of a well-paying job, and military service. Thus, it is meant that 'gThe Diall' should serve primarily as a tangible record of our years at South Park, our shining hours. And who of us can deny that it fully lives up to its purpose in this respect? For, when we look through The Dial - 1959,' and read of our accomplish- ments and see ourselves on the Honor Roll or on the football team or on the debating team or in the Slide Rule Club or in any other phase of school life, we shall say to ourselves: I had a full, rich life at South Park. I did much and accomplished much. I spent my time wisely. I had fun. And this is as it should be. I mark the hours that shine. -Paul De Forest 3
