Since thc adoption of the Contitution, thousands of citizens have contributed wealth, wisdom, life and effort to enrich the blessings that citizenship in this nation denotes. You have an obligation to protect and preserve that heritage. By actions, thoughts and expressions you should demonstrate your faith and confidence in the principles and ideals upon which it is founded. During your attendance at South Park many opportunities were presented to you to acquire a knoweldge of the duties and responsibilities of citizenship. In classes and in extra-curricular activities you learned the importance of respecting the right of others as well as the necessity for carrying your fair share of the burden in all common undertakings. Here too you may see in mar- ble, in oils, in water colors, the expression of man's artistic nature and enjoy one of man's most aesthetic forms of culture. . . . the Museum of Science where classes are conducted that give to those who enroll not only information of the physical world and its laws but also encourages organizations of profession- als and amateurs, such as the Buffalo Ornithological Society, Geological Section, the Amateur Telescope Makers and Observers of Buffalo and Guides of the .lunior Education Department. . . . the Historical Building where one may see portrayed the rich background of the Niagara Frontier, the turbulent history of the French fur trapper, the English settler and the American Indian. Here you can actually re-live the early formative days of our city and our country. . . . the Memorial Auditorium, with its diversity of indoor events and the thousands of people they attract, testifying to the fact that our citizens recognize the need for variety in life and appreciate good sports and entertainment in many fields. . . . the Civic Stadium which provides Buffalonians with diverse outdoor activities, such as automobile racing, gridiron battles, circuses and pageants. . . . the City Hall, Courts of Law and Council Chambers to observe the workings of a democratic government, to see how that government actually operates, and to secure a better understanding of the principles of democracy in practice. w Seniors Commencement marks the climax of four years of seco11dary school. It is both and end and a beginning, the end of our high school years, the beginning, for some, of a career in the business or industrial world, for others higher education in college or universities. Front the time we were freshmen at South Park our eyes were set upon that day when wc would receive our diplomas, certificates which bear witness to twelve years of education and which bring us closer to the realization of our ultimate goal in life. During these years we have made litany friends and through the guidance of competent instructors have learned to adapt ourselves more readily to a useful life in society. We feel greatly indebted and wish to extend our heartiest 'thanks to all our teachers who have earnestly worked to give us an adequate education. ln addition to schooling us in fundamental subjects, our teachers have endeavored to mould us into good citizens. They must excel in attendance, attitudes, scholarship, extra-curricular activities, and sports since it is their leadership that the student body follows. They are looking forward to their senior year with great anticipation. lt is mixed with a little sadness since it will he their last year at South Park. The sophomores are now comfortably settled in their chosen courses and are ready for two years of hard work. They are well on their way to fulfilling their hopes and ambitions. Now that the green has worn off, the freshmen are pruning themselves to he sophomores, never more to he classed as little or utypical fresh- men. All Senior students in the secretarial or business course attending any public high school in Buffalo may supplement their classroom training by working in offices and stores of those firms who endorse this program. The plan of organization is such that it combines theory with practice. The pupil working at the part time job must be in school during the early part of the day attending classes in English and Amer- ican History, as well as wto class periods in related business subjects. Time on the job varies from two to five hours a day. Who endorses the cooperative wonk program? The NOMA and Retail Mer- chants Association have endorsed this plan and consider it an extremely im- portant source for obtaining skilled workers. What are the benefits of such a program? Business firms do not look upon this program as merely a channel for part time help, but consider it an excellent opportunity to screen prospec- tive full time employees. The schools benefit because there is opportunity for closer correlation between the school- room and the business office. The stu- dent gains a better appreciation of work- ing standards and a clearer understand- ing of how business and industry operate. Has this program succeeded at South Park High Schol? Approximately thirty- five seniors have been placed as typist- stenographers, shipping clerks, and office machine operators. Most of these students will have a full tilne job upon graduation Reports from employers are good. This is an excellent commentary on the work done in our commercial department. Athletics The roar of thc crowd when the win- ning touchdown is scored with a half minute to go, that basket from half court in the closing seconds and that grueling hut victorious run, will always he high in the memory of South Park students when they think hack on their high school years. I guess no one will forget Thanksgiving Day this year when the uSpark caught fire and after four years of carving the turkey, we took home the largest part, to the tune of 34-7. Although this victory was great, it could not he over- shadowed by our hard working cross country team which captured second place. Basketball, hasehall, and the other sports did not fair too well, still there were moments when our teams showed championship caliher. Win or lose where interest in sports and regard for fair play flourish students are getting something more than the play on the field reveals. They are building character and that is our top aim. Yes this was a glorious year for South Park and the players and spectators will not soon forget the late autumn of 1951. 66 ATHLETICS 67 South Park Champs in Harvard Cup One ot' the most powerful foothall teams in the history of South Park High School hrought the Harvard Cup hack to South Buffalo for the first time in sixteen years. The Sparks ended an untied and undefeated season in a hlaze of glory when they uncorked a smashing 34-7 defeat against Seneca Vocational High School on Thanksgiving Day hefore five thousand fans. Rolling up five touchdowns for the highest win- i,..,.,M U l,,. ... ning score in twenty-four years of Thanksgiving Day title games gave League l its first Harvard Cup victory in five years and gained South Park the distinction of having three players named on the HAH-High teams. Bill 'alron Man Wilson was named left end and also captain of the All-High team along with Sal '4Mereurial Pace at left half-hack and Steve Auto- matien Qualey at center. lndividual honors are due every member of this squad. They practiced and played like men and earned the honors achieved. Tremendous enthusiasm swept through our community after this great victory. The victorious squad of 195l has hrought haek to South Park worthy praise and commen- dation. This year's team won none and lost thirteen. Two ol' the team members made the honorable men- tion list on tlw All-High team: Toni Maloney, our leading seorer with 186 points, good enough to finish eleventh in the Yale Cup scoring raec and Gerald Holtz, our set-ond leading seorcr with 13-l points. Swim Fantasy Amid a setting of hunnies. eolorcd eggs and gaily det-orated spring honnetst the theme of the water show Easter Fantasyi' was presented hy the girls' swimming classes. The opening numher, presented hy the Freshmen was a heautiful floating formation 1-alled 'l'iaster Basket. Purple Rhapsody, an original duet composition hy Carmen and Carol Fetzer was executed with grave and perfect preeision. The smooth waltz crawl, hy the sextet, was a triumph of artistic achievement. A solo numher hy Anne Griffith demonstrated outstanding ahility. Peter Rahhit and Gottontail performed humorous aurohaties off the diving hoard. A surprising and hilarious fishing act hy Nliss Barry and Miss Hofman easily was the hit of the show. Gail Coughlin and Carol Renner presented a speeialty act. The graeeful diving of Anne Griffith and Mareia 'l'hompson was superh. ln the finale, the sophomores and Juniors portrayed twinkling stars in intricate formations. lioaine Umel was the narrator. The colorful costumes and posters were designed hy Barhara Paul. The mermaids sang Plaster songs and Patriria Bonavito played the arc-ordion. Miss Gallagher, assisted hy the Fetzer twins and the east worked diligently in presenting an outstanding performance. The American Red Cross Swimming Test The American Red Cross Swimming and Testing Programs were used as a basis of work in the girls' swimming classes this year. Twenty-seven girls will receive swimmer cards which include all the above pre-life saving tests, but each stroke must be demonstrated along with several other skills. A girl is a very good swimmer when she holds this card. Sixty-five girls will receive intermediate cards from the Red Cross certifying as to their skill in passing all the required items listed on that series. One hundred and forty-eight girls passed the beginners tests. This series of tests measures the ability of the personal safety of the new swimmer.
